Oscars ratings up despite worries

Remember last year's Academy Awards? Probably not, as the 80th edition of Hollywood's biggest night was a snoozer and delivered the worst ratings the ceremony ever recorded. This year, concerns the same thing may happen were just as ratings seem to be down for just about everything and fan favorite The Dark Knight wasn't up for big picture.

Fortunately for ABC, the show was a relative success, increasing ratings from last year and garnering generally positive reviews. Last night's 81st Academy Awards brought in 36.3 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as well as a 12.1 rating among adults. Last year's event, by comparison, drew 32 million viewers and a 10.7 rating.

Though no longer a must-see event, last night's ceremony was the most-watched "entertainment telecast" in the last two years.

ABC destroyed all competition for the evening, getting 24.3 million viewers for its red-carpet coverage as well.

What were your thoughts of this year's Oscars? Do you think the production rebounded?

Hugh Jackman was great, but he wasn't on stage long enough! I liked the past winners presenting the awards - good concept.

Hugh Jackman was great! I loved his opening number, it was so funny. I thought it was really creative how they presented the awards in the order of how a movie is made, from the screenplay to the post-production sound editing and music. The stage was also really pretty with the crystals and the design on the floor. I really enjoyed all the big singing and dancing numbers as well. Overall I think the Oscars were a lot better than what it has been in the past.

I hope they bring Hugh back to host next year.

Hugh was great and the oscars were an improvement on last year. Slumdog deserved the best picture oscar but one can't help but think that the oscars robbed The Dark Knight of some truely deserved nominations (possibly victories).

I thought it was the best Oscars in an extremely long time. Hugh Jackman owned that stage.

And I am incredibly pleased with Slumdog's awards.

oh so we should have given it to Rourke for his "Comeback Performance" and playing a character with similarities to him instead of Penn.

Not that Rourke wasn't good (Although Penn was better) don't try and use the gay movie argument when their is a similar story for Rourke.

i think the oscars last night was pretty amazing..

hugh jackman was the best and the speech of katre winslet was phenomenal..

though most the awards are given to slumdog millionaire, benjamin button and dark knight.i think most of the nominees deserve to be there.

though anne hathaway didn't win..its one in a million chance that a young celebrity will get a chance to win in oscar or be nominated.

the speeches and presentors did great..hail hugh jackman.

Hugh Jackman and the team did a great job!
Haven't seen the whole thing as it will be shown at a later date here in NZ so have survived on clips on the news and youtube, but will definitely make an effort to watch it when it is on.
As for who got what I'm not too worried. That isn't why I watch. What I like and what the academy likes aren't always going to match up. I watch for the speeches and the presenters.

I disagreed with most of the awards. I was happy for Heath Ledger and Kate Winslet. But Sean Penn and Slumdog Millionaire...are you kidding me ?

Mickey Rourke should have won "Best Actor" for the wrestler and not the overrated hack better known as Sean Penn. Oh look, a movie about a homosexual, let's put it up for best actor as a form of apology for Proposition 8. I personally have nothing against the gay community, but it was obvious that Rourke was ten times the actor Sean was.
