Pair of CBS shows marked for death

For most Americans, the plummeting economy means substituting Admiral Snack'ems for Captain Crunch, Dr. Skipper for Dr. Pepper, and pieces of cardboard in melted Parmesan for Mac 'n Cheese. For major television networks, the financial nosedive means cancelling some of its pricier shows outright.

CBS may be battling for the title of America's Most Watched Network, but it's also trying to be America's Most Cost-Efficient Network. According to EW.com, the two CBS procedurals Without a Trace and Cold Case are firmly on the chopping block as the network looks to stay in the black.

"[Cold Case and Without a Trace] no longer have the type of ratings that justify the massive overhead," a source tells EW. However, the source also says that producers are looking for ways to tighten the belt, which likely means reduced salaries for actors rather than making sets out of balsa wood.

While both shows draw great general numbers, not enough hip, young, money-spenders watch them, which means advertisers think they can't sell fast cars, pheromone-pumping body spray, or anything that may cause dentures to fall out on the two shows. If either of these programs do go under, it will be more fuel for the great "overall viewers"-versus-"18-49-year-old viewers" debate.

Without a Trace is currently in its seventh season, and Cold Case is in its sixth.

Have Without a Trace and Cold Case run their course? Do they deserve another shot?

I'm so tired of network execs catering to the 'younger set'. And to lump 18 - 25 year olds in with 35+ year olds??? I think some of us 40+ year olds have more money to spend than the average 18 year old and most likely we are the ones paying the cable bill in the household!! I'm 45, intelligent, and uh, last I checked I'm a consumer too Mr. Advertiser!! I'm so sick and tired of TV execs canceling well-written entertaining shows because they want to cater to 20 something reality tv junkies!! CBS and I are about to part company!! (ABC and NBC might be leaving my nest as well!!)

I don't understand why CBS broadcasts Cold Case at a late hour (is it the same thing for Withouta Trace?). Instead of complaining that the ratings are going down, CBS network shouldn't change broadcasting of these two cop shows ?

Must me say that these tv shows are very well followed in the world? So misters producers, listen us and leave us our favorite cop shows !

Ps : For fans who have not signed the petitions, there is one for saving WAT (http://www.petitiononline.com/wat2010/petition.html) and another one for Cold Case (http://www.gopetition.com/online/26360.html)

We need of your help !

I think the biggest question, haldrey, is how can Cold Case that always seem to make the TOP 20 be on the chopping block? Honestly, that's insane. Cold Case is averging 11.3 million viewers every night which is more than enough at a time like this.

How a show like Without a Trace that ranks 348 out of 18,049, a high ranking indeed, can be on chopping block? Also Cold Case another excellent show. If salaries are to high cut out some of the cast or better yet, actors are earning maybe more than they should and should take a cut. When the economy is failing for many TV and movies is the only affordable entertainment.

CBS should take a sit back and see on any programs they think they want to cut. With NBC going to a talk show (Jay Leno) nightly in the 10PM slot, I believe many more people will be turning to CBS. I watch both shows and have since they began, ialso watch the Law & Order series and other shows on NBC via DVR, but losing that time slot for those types of shows will be the ruin of NBC. Thank god for USA and CW and TNT if CBS gets rid of the good hows including The Unit.

I don't watch Without a Trance to much anymore, but I do watch Cold Case, and this just plains sucks.Hip, young, money-spenders don't have as much money as the networks think they have. Most young people are trying to make their marks rather than spend their hard earn money. And cutting people's salaries is easier than using cheaper products to make the sets.

Yes, these are two of my favorite shows. They can cancel The Amazing Race and several other shows to keep these shows. I am so tired of the reality shows I cannot even stand to hear about another one. I do not watch any reality shows anyway but please give these two shows what they deserve and that is kudos for being such great shows with a plot.

I love WITHOUT A TRACE! I agree that we need to give Sam and Jack a chance. Wouldn't we love to see them make a close family? Jack already loves the baby and he and Sam have always had that special 'something'. CBS probably just wants to put more crap on- like another reality show! I'm game if we can get a letter writing campaign going. I will probably write anyway. There is NO reason to take a good show off the air when so much other junk is left on. It has nothing to do with cost... It's the people making the decision think we can't maintain a thought for more than 60 seconds! It's clear-they think we're morons.

Sam and Jack are just starting to heat back up, they can't cancel Without A Trace. And Cold Case is finally starting to get interestig. First Sara leaves, then they kill off Warrick, and then Grissom leaves. I'm no longer watching CSI so I think I'd go insane if my other shows were cancelled.

When are the advertising idiots going to realize that we baby boomers ie those of us no longer in the coveted 18-49 bracket happen to be the BIGGEST bracket going and probably the one with the most money in this horrible economy we are now in? The coveted 18-49ers are too busy job hunting to buy anything pricey and credit is nowhere.

Parents pay for the licence fee not their children and its mostly teenagers that watch reality shows like Big Brother and X Factor.Grown ups like myself who are in their forties watch drama shows like Cold Case & Without A Trace for example. So to keep axing these shows to put on more realty shows is not the answer in getting viewers sitting on there bums in front of the tv once more.

I find it ironic that tv companys are in trouble now with all these realty shows when years ago when there was only a few on each week television was in its heyday.

Michael Grade says less drama more realty shows yet his father Lew Grade changed tv in the sixties with The Saint, The Avengers, Danger Man, The Prisoner etc...

How i wish his father was still with us!

I understand money but why only cater to the young crowd. These two shows have loyal watchers. Quite frankly tv ads do not get me to buy anything. Usually they are cute the first time but after the fifth they become annoying.

If they would get rid of the stupid reality shows there would be more money for the real dramas. We do not like reality television. It is not even reality and it is scripted so please get rid of those shows and keep the ones that are scripted and not reality but we love the shows.

Bummer about CC. Usually a pretty good show. Just another batch of TV shows going out in favor of Reality. What a shame! I like Survivor, even if it's run its course, but what are we going to get in lieu of these shows? Big Brother Fall edition, 2 HOURS! Don't doubt it!

I've never been interested in those shows, but I watched them with my family, and they're some of the best dramas on CBS. I think they deserve another chance. They need to get rid of Survivor, and not get rid of shows that are actually good, and worth watching.

I never liked Cold Case just because of that blond woman's hair, but I like Without A Trace. It gets good numbers, but not with the right people? That's a poor excuse to cancel something. Maybe they should throw in some gratuitous car chases, explosions, and a few exotic dancers and see if their target money spending audience tunes in.

I know that most teenagers and yuppies are now into internet sharing, youtube and DVDs. The networks need to get with the times or they will loose thier shirts. They need to discover new markets, new products to advertise and get to know their audience...

CBS has shown over and over how asinine they are. Cold Case is an excellent show and Without a Trace is very good. GREED is why. All major TV stations could make money by sharing, making peoples favorite shows available, sharing night time slots, co-operating. Never happen, I know. And teeneagers and yuppies are not the majority of viewers!

WAT is a good show. I don't watch it often, but it's always been a decent procedural. I never watched Cold Case, but I have friends who enjoy it. I bet if I gave it a shot, I would enjoy it too. Sad to see CBS have to threaten these long time good performers for them to stay on the air. I wish their cast and crew the best.
