Parenthood Gets Renewed for Season 2

Parenthood has been picked up for a second season, according to Deadline Hollywood Daily. NBC's highly publicized first-year family drama premiered right after the Winter Olympics in March and has earned consistently higher ratings than its Tuesday-at-10-p.m. competitor, The Good Wife.

Now that the Ron Howard pet project is sitting pretty on 20-or-so more episodes, it'll have ample time and space to make use of its talented ensemble cast! I took a liking to this show from the start, but I still think there's room for loads of improvement. For starters, acting vets Craig T. Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia, who play Zeke and Camille Braverman, are grossly underused. Zeke's uncomfortable sex talk with grandson Drew (Miles Heizer) in "Wassup" was, shall we say, a moment of pure, honest comedy. I also hope that single-mom Sarah (Lauren Graham) gets her act together—isn't it about time for her to get a real job and move her two kids out of her parents' house?

Complaints aside, Parenthood's writers have been remarkably successful at balancing the tangled web of storylines they've woven. We've already seen almost every member of the Braverman clan experience success, failure, conflict, and compromise in a believable way, which must have been a difficult feat to accomplish. Nice work, Parenthood. See you in Fall 2010.
