On CBS tonight, one of the only award shows which blame can only be put on the viewers aired. I'm talking of course about the People's Choice Awards, and this year's edition may be the most important for the ceremony--it turned 35 years old tonight. Not only is it a birthday, it also is rebounding from last year's writers strike (which left then host Queen Latifah to fend for herself) and is still building upon its change in voting system--in 2005 it went online to let the "people" choose its winners.
Latifah once again hosted this year's event, which features categories from the worlds of film, music, and our favorite, television. Sure it isn't the Oscars, Emmys, or *gasp* even the Golden Globes (example: best new comedy nominee...Kath & Kim?), but the PCAs are a bit of fun and represent a different kind of awards show...an awards show that loves network television, doesn't think Lost is a good drama or The Office is a good comedy, and has a favorite game show category.
The highlights in the television crowd included House, which came up big with the best drama award and best male actor award for Hugh Laurie. On the comedy side, Two and a Half Men took the show prize, and Christina Applegate won the best actress prize for her role in Samantha Who?. CBS won both new show awards for Gary Unmarried and The Mentalist.
In other media, The Dark Knight won a ton of film awards, and Chris Brown and Carrie Underwood topped the music awards.
The winners in the television categories are listed below in bold. A list of all winners is available at the People's Choice Awards Web site.

Several other sites listed Supernatural as the winner of the Sci Fi catagory, and not Heroes. Season 1 of Heroes might have won, but not the last 2 seasons. Good, but not as good as it use to be. Supernatural gets better every season.
Nothing but the mentalist
Yay Hugh and House!!!!
Congrats to the winners and those whose not win, better luck next time
Is it not about time that people realised The Simpsons is going downhill and fast. Just stand aside and make room for South Park, at least theres a show that stays consistantly good.
I would have only voted for four of them. Good call peon4570, Kath and Kim should not have been nominated. Good to see The Mentalist won, great to see a good aussie actor.
Kath and Kim got a nom! Junk I can't believe that this show is still on! American Television ruins another. Anywho I was glad to see House win.
That's an interesting splattering of award winners, kinda surprised, and yet again, who else is voting but the American people? I mean for goodness sakes, "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," was number 1 for several weeks in a row....how could we think this would be any better? There's not much to choose from within each category, although props do go to Hugh and Robin Williams, much deserved!
Congratulations to Hugh Laurie, House, The Mentalist, and Kyra Sedgwick.
well, I like the Reality and Game show winners and Ellen DeGeneres is pretty funny! =)
How come True Blood isnt nominated in the favorite new tv drama category? And I am definitely surprised about Supernatural not being picked over Heroes. Would not be surprised if devoted fans of Heroes skewed that result by mass voting. Doctor Who should definitely had been nominated in that category? Who picks the nominees anyway?
heroes won?! though I can't imagine how.
I HATE HEROES!!!! How could it beat SUPERNATURAL!?
I can't believe Heroes won that award. Supernatural clearly should have won! I'm a fan of both shows but Supernatural has been incredible for the past two seasons when Heroes has been mediocre :(
I don't like that Heroes won the sci-fi category, but I have difficulty thinking of any of the nominees as "sci-fi." Sliders, Bab5, Battlestar G., Dr. Who, style sci-fi shows seem to be really absent these days. I guess people are settling for Heroes??????
congrats to my favorites Kyra Sedgwick anf=d Hugh Laurie way to go !!!
Heroes?!?! Honestly?!?! Come on people! Supernatural deserved that!!
I love that House and Hugh won their awards, but not that Supernatural and Fringe lost theirs.
I agree with most of the voting, but I don't think that the Sci-fi/fantasy category was fair. Good shows were left out... Hugh Laurie well deserved the award and Mentalist is by far the best new show. I guess the people got it right!
agree with house and Laurie, Ellen, the Simpsons. But totally disagree with Heroes, I'd like to see SPN as a winner. that's it for me!
I'm glad Heroes won.
Hugh and House: the best .. of course!
Seem about right
Winners were pretty predictable.
Heroes beat out Supernatural and Terminator?! WTF is wrong with the people.
Awesome. Agree with most choices :0
For the most part I agree with the winners ( which almost never happens), but I would have liked it if Supernatural would have won.
No real surprises here. I like the Mentalist but for me Fringe just edges it for best new drama. Best new comedy - what a poor selection to choose from! No wonder Gary Unmarried won it, the other 2 are simply dreadful.
Congrats to winners.
Amen, Robin Williams was terrific. Everything else was expected.
Go The Simpsons
The Mentalist and Fringe were the two best new shows of the year, so that was the only true toss-up. But man, a lot of these nominees did not deserve to be there.
