From her pedigree, it was clear Emily Deschanel wasn't going to remain a bit player for long. The actress comes from a family of Hollywood names; her father Caleb is a well-known cinematographer, her mother is actress Mary Jo Deschanel, and her sister is Zooey Deschanel (Almost Famous, Weeds).
After flirting with several bit parts in films, Emily finally found front-and-center as the lead in the Fox forensics show Bones. The drama first aired in 2005, and its third season premiered last week.
Deschanel took a break from filming the show to speak with reporters in a casual conference call. The 30-year-old actress fielded questions covering all sorts of topics, ranging from her hunky costar David "Angel" Boreanaz (who keeps everyone on their toes with a whoopee cushion on set) to her viewpoints as an animal-rights activist on recent news items involving dogfighting ("If one good thing can happen from these cases being brought to light it's people opening their eyes to what's going on and the cruelty that's happening").
However, most of the questions were about the show, which follows a forensic anthropologist with a knack for getting clues out of bones. Deschanel plays Dr. Temperance Brennan, who is flanked by several other genius--albeit quirky--minds at the Jeffersonian Institution.
One of the show's draws is the sexual tension between the two lead characters, Brennan and Boreanaz's special agent Seeley Booth. When the subject comes up, Deschanel confesses, "I think they should [get together] at some point. I think it gets really dangerous, though, to do it on the show."
She explains that the writers and producers are very aware of the potential problems that could happen from letting the two characters drop everything and go at it.
"It's possible it could kill the thing that holds the show together, the chemistry, sexual tension between the two characters," said Deschanel. "At the same time, I don't think [the writers and producers] want to leave the characters in the same holding pattern that they've been in for a while."
Deschanel also teased some highlights from the upcoming season. Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) and Dr. Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) "go looking for the man that [Angela] married a few years ago, which is the whole reason why they had to leave their wedding." Zack will make a return from Iraq--though it's unclear for how long, Booth has "a little situation" with Dr. Camille Saroyan's (Tamara Taylor) sister, and Booth and Brennan will be put in couples therapy to deal with on-the-job tensions stemming from Booth's arrest of Brennan's father.
Behind the scenes, Deschanel describes the atmosphere as very open, as actors, writers, and producers all have their say in the show. She and Boreanaz will usually think of ways to add to their scenes with some extra lines of dialogue without tinkering with the actual content. The work schedule forces the team to move forward rather than dwell on certain scenes, and Deschanel thinks it's a good thing.
"We can't spend all day trying to get the performance exactly right and you just have to accept that and move on and accept the medium that you're working in," she says. "There's a beauty in working under constraints and limitations."
In the off-season, Fox decided to put Bones back on Tuesday nights with its old bed buddy House. And being the lead in for one of Fox's biggest shows doesn't bother Deschanel at all.
"I'm so excited. I think it's a fantastic pairing," said Deschanel. "I think that Bones and House were kind of made to be with each other. You have these two doctors that are kind of prickly on the outside as the main characters and very different kinds of doctors and prickly in very different ways and my character you know is not quite as prickly as she used to be, but she still has that edge to her and I think they are a really nice complement with each other."
Bones airs Tuesdays nights on Fox. For more information, read TV.com's previous coverage.

YES! OMG isnt this what weve all been wating for?!?! a B/B hook up! Yes Please..
i think they should hook up. But that too a bit later in the show. It's funny to watch them both try to teach and help each other with stuff.
I love Emily and David should get together
i totally agree with beachfrontglass...no hook up till the end plz!! i rekon its pretty funny everyone talks bout BnB stuff only>>> wat bout the forensic stuff aye??
bones for life!!
I think they should get together, however, with the sort of people they are, i see a long journey ahead of them before they can actually get together. They still have major issues like marriage, religion, children to sort out.
I think Booth and Brennan should be together sometime in the near future. Not right away, but eventually, and certainly not at th end of the series. To those that say the inevitable relationship would spoil the show's chemistry, I say look at Gilmore Girls. We waited until the end of Season 4 for Luke and Lorelai to get together, and when they did, there was still plenty of material for three more seasons (Although I have to say, if Bones ever becomes as much of a soap as Gilmore Girls was in Season 7... I may just have to kill myself). Booth and Brennan being together COULD work, and could even be a great dynamic to push the show somewhere new, IF it's done right.
OMG IVE SEEN A PICTURE OF THE BRENNAN BOOTH REAL KISS!!!! NO JOKE I AM NOT LYING I SWEAR, AIRED SOMETIME IN DECEMBER OMG OMG OMG AAAAA
I agree with you all. they should be together at some point but not now. the drunken kiss idea would be amazing to see what happens after that and how these two deal with the "underlined issue".I don't know if i want to wait that long for them to at least kiss. but for sure i dont want the show to be killed after they hook up you know?it's a delicate situation. but i trust in the writers as i've been doing till now. she's right.
I say they should wait a little more before getting them together.
If it's too rushed, they'll love their chemistry and that won't be very good for the show...
I believe they should have a drunken kiss encounter on New Years Eve and then act all awkward the rest of the season trying to deal with the chemistry between them. I don't think that any other third parties need to be involved this year. B&B should get not together until the final season of the show.
Putting them together is too predictable. They need to do like Mulder and Scully. Never hook up till the end.
Darn! -newjerseyliz- stole my idea.
I also think that B&B, should kiss and maybe "go at it" while being drunk or something, and then have vage recolections of it, and be all akward about it for some time, I think it'd be great, because they have a thing but a t the same time they don't.
hey cool new enterview i think she was right i mean i want booth and brennan to get together but it would make the show i dunno maybe kinda lame i dont know i mean i LOVE bones and i want them to kiss cause i am pretty sure they would look great kissing each other but maybe it should hold till i dont know maybe the last three eps of the final season of the show that way it cant be runed and i am liking the attinion between them dont you like it too ?
I also think that you should keep them apart for a bit longer. As much as I and probably many other fans would like to see them together i think it would kill the show a little bit. It would be nice to see just one kiss though.
Keep up the tension. It's hot. And on a side note, I sure hope Zach is back for good. I adore him.
Give the show one more year before Bones and Boreanaz get together. This is the 3rd year and they still need the tension to hold the show together.
Leave them for awhile, keeping up the 'moments' and have them grow even closer. I think the writers are able to have many more great episodes without anything actually happening between these too. There feels as though there is alot of tension now, but I think it has the potential to build alot more. Anyway, as long as BB have their moments, and as long as there are NO MORE THIRD PARTIES I'm happy
I think a good season finale would be seiing booth and brennan together in a csiesque sorta way
keep the suspense and bring it over to the next season
unsure!!:?
I think they should get together but not yet. It's to soon.
I agree with Ms. Deschanel, besides the show is more than just Booth and Brennan. I say they keep the couple as partners and friends, and give the audience more little by little, without being boring. I´m sure they´ll please us.
They should get together at some point, but not yet. For now I'm satisfied with their "partners" status.
I think that all of you have great ideas, at any rate it would be nice to see a slight heating up of tension between them. Like last night when Bones puts his head on Brennan's shoulder, that was cool! She didn't make him move his head nor did she flinch.
I'd love to see Brennan and Booth together, but it would ruin the show. Good interview!
Get them together! But do it in later seasons and in a way that will blow our minds!
The chemistry, sexual tension make for good television between the two characters, leave it be for awhile and then make it happen. Everyone knows what happens when characters sleep together -the plot gets predictable.
Im kinda unsure what should happen. GO BONES!!!
I agree with 'newjerseyliz', I think they should have a (drunken?) kiss then act all awkward about it later as it would suit them and their characters and it would also keep the tension going for a bit longer as something new is in the mix. I can't wait to see what actually happens!
They have to be very careful about having those two hook up. It killed the mood in Moonlighting and in several other good shows. The sexual tension is what makes the show stand out. Having them hook up would be a final season if not final episode deal...
I think they should kiss when they are drunk some time (not let it get to sleeping together) and then they could have months of trying to avoid the obvious chemistry as the characters have gone two season without even acknowledging their chemistry. Then they could go through awkward months of first her wanting to pursue him then falling for someone else which makes him jealous and realize he wants to pursue her (in a Ross/Rachel 1/2 season way). That could last all season into the next. Right now though, they need something as a catalyst to at least acknowledge their attraction and then they can spend months trying to figure out what to do. Or they could model on the Woody/Jordan relationship on Crossing Jordan, they managed to go through five seasons without a firm commitment to each other besides a couple of "I love you"s. There is a lot of comic/dramatic possibilities that exist without throwing them in the sack...yet. I wouldn't want to ruin their odd working relationship in the process.moreless
I think the show can keep going if Booth and Brenna sleep together, but not if they become a serious couple. I think a page could easily be taken from the book of House MD when Cameron and Chase (what's with the alliterative naming at FOX?) slept together season two. That elevated tension, satisfied some latent desires from the audience, and did not effect the overall condition of the show. It also allowed the very slow progression of their relationship to work in the third season, so I think that's the best bet.
My opinion is that they should be together, otherwise the story will start to be boring at some time.
Totally agree, Booth and Brennan should get together at some point, but I think that could end the show. They shouldn't get together until the end... lots of ways things could happen. can't wait for next week! :D
Nice!!
At least she thinks what we do, they should be together, but its true.. what happens after that??
Ratings.. =) new histories?? there's a lot of things to think xD
