Prison Break ending series after season

Can we still be friends?

Prison Break fans, there's really no easy way to say this so we'll just take a very direct approach: Prison Break is coming to an end...soon; Fox today announced the series will be ending at the conclusion of this season.

The news probably isn't a huge shock to anyone who has been following the series recently. Late last year, speculators thought the show would be coming to an end when Fox tacked on a few extra hours to this year's production schedule. And with heavy promotion for Fringe, 24, and Lie to Me in full swing, it isn't hard to see who the odd man out is.

Prison Break is currently on a little vacation, as Fox beefs up its midseason schedule with the aforementioned trio and a little program called American Idol. However, Fox did schedule a return for the final episodes of Prison Break--they begin their run April 17.

According to TVGuide.com, Fox president Kevin Reilly explained, "[Prison Break] got to a point where a lot of the stories had been told," which is a kind way to say the show was running on fumes creatively. At least six hours of the drama are left to go, with the possibility of a few more hours added as Reilly said he wants the program to "finish strong."

Before fans organize a save-the-show campaign complete with an assault of freshly shaven hair and teabags, consider this: Prison Break was originally conceived as a one-season show or mini-series, but instead was stretched out to four full seasons. That's some glass-is-half-full thinking right there.

Well Prison Breakers, do you agree with Fox's Reilly? Did the show run out of gas? Who will you miss most when the screen goes dark?

  • coolbear123

As much as I loved the show Prison Break I have to agree that they were starting to run out of ideas... I mean what else could happen they get locked in another prison for the fourth time. One of the things that I will miss the most is watching the show after dinner with my whole family wondering what is gonna happen next. The acting in that TV series was really good each actor and actress fit their role really well. I will defiantly miss the show but the person who I will miss the most is William Fichtner or better know as Alexander Mahone for all you Prison Breakers.

Honestly a season 5 needs to be made, with Michael coming back with a fake death, this show was amazing but the ending was not what I expected... 24 was an amazing series but not even Jack dies at the end, how do you kill the one guy who did everything for everyone before himself and not let him even meet his son.... this was horrible it needs to be fixed... not just because I say it but pull all the reviews listed on this show and you will see many feel just as strong as me........it was a battle after battle there has got to be sunshine somewhere and this ending did not have it.... so FOX i don't know why you wanted to stop airing Prison Break because I would choose PB anytime over american idol......PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX ITmoreless

In my imagination michael got saved by some doctors hired by paul kellerman and then got put into the same prison as t-bag and that way got out there after 10 years or so :'(

I wish they will make a book or something about what happened after michaels death and so on.

Prison break is a very special show. With the combonation of great writers and dynamic actors which all seemed to fit their roles so perfectly, I find it hard to believe that with that amount of talent working together they had to end it after four seasons. I believe that the level of creativeness in place there could send the show in so many directions, with no limits on the amount of succesful options there would be. I really hope i havent seen the last of prison break or michael scofield.

I agree, the show has been extended so much, season 1, 2 were the best, other ones, there were emotion, action and a lot of drama than the necessary, I only hope its end be great as its start

Yep, it's time to end. Great series but I think it said everything that was meant to say. Stretching a series forever is a bad thing. Thankfully the fourth season was great.

Well, unfortunately I didn't (or wasn't able) to follow it completely (only the first season) because of dodgy showtimes here in The Netherlands.(The same counts for shows like 'My Name Is Earl'; showing up for a while, disappearing for a long time, then coming back and rerunning, etc.)But I loved what I've seen of it, I just hope the rest isn't bad.And... I don't know... I wouldn't mind it ending as long as it does in a good way.Like they said, they want to end it strong, so I hope it will be good and won't regret buying all of it on home-video.Maybe in some time they can come up with some kind of good movie "that something came up" huh?Or perhaps even some more episodes later. But then, they're already working on a spin-off, so...So it's all good, it's always sad to see something good go.But at least they can be proud of a great concept and performance. They did something.moreless

I agree, I think it's time they should end it, because it can't get better if they make a new season, it can get only worse, so they should end it while it is great.

Yes, I as a Prison Break fan say it is time to end the show. I would like to know that Michael and Linc both are safe and free from the burden of being on the run and that will end the saga nicely. I loved the show and the characters but it was a good run. Thanks for the ride guys.

I have followed the Prison Break series from day 1, never have i been so into a series where i cant miss an episode, never have i constantly been kept on the edge of my seat the whole time, constantly guessing whats gonna happen, eagerly awaiting for more of the story to unravel and just when you think its all figured out it twists again. When it first began to watch the series i thought how could they possibly go any longer then a couple of series, but now i want more and more, i have seen it all up until now and to find that the story ends soon is an outrage, im not saying to not end the story but it feels like it has only just begun with the preview of the brothers going against one another it begs for at least one more season and ending it now seems like a story unfinished. Im sure every fan would agree that yes it did appear at 1st to be a short lived series but i believe the creators have shown how creative there minds can be and it has been cut short. I am extremely disappointed that the creators of this brilliant series of the century have decided to end it now. I applaud the creators for giving us this exciting series but seriously a season 5 with a final 20 plus episodes to tell more of the story could be possible why end it at season 4 when you still have people begging for more... TV.com in answer to your question Fox president Kevin Reilly is wrong it did not run out of fumes of creativeness. In australia season 4 is being pushed back to the end of the year due to rating problems as people cannot always dedicate there time to always watch it, that is the networks fault, a series with so much to tell and twists and turns should have episode reruns as you miss an episode you miss a piece of the puzzle, some episodes were rerun in australia as the show was so popular it was demanded to be replayed. People expected the series to end quickly as the idea of people breaking out of prison and being on the run most would assume how could it possibly go further, i know as i was one of those people expecting it to have a short life span, yet every episode new suprises, new twists. I shall continue to want more and believe if the show was to end it could be wrapped up in a fifth season. Fan for life and outraged with the news of the spectaluar series coming to an end... and to Fox president Kevin Reilly I am protesting on face bookmoreless

I really do love this series but i think we all really need an end. it's nice sometimes for a show to go on for 7 seasons, but sometimes you just need a conclusion and not more questions. (like lost.... just saying :) although I'm sad to see it go, i kinda glad it's ending. no lie i will miss Wentworth though :)

Although im sad to see it go, i am really really glad that its ending. After season 3 i was really worried the show would go on for 6 or even 7 seasons of nothing. So its releaving to see its coming to an end like LOST is.

I was hoping this series would continue for another 50 years and every other season they have to break out of a new prison, eventually the last bad guy will die of old age and they will break out of prison for the last time faking heart attacks, the last scene will be the surviving crew unzipping their body bags then a group high five jump, freeze frame, fade to black. FIN.

I for one am glad to see the show end this year. I loved season one, and I thought they took the show in a great direction season two (especially by adding William Fichtner, who is fantastic). I was so very disappointed last year that I almost dropped the show. But, this season started pretty strong, so I'm looking forward to the last handful of episodes. I think it is a great decision to build on a solid "comeback" season and bring it to an end. As long as they don't pull an Alias and cram too much strange into the final few episodes, we're likely in for a treat.

I loved the first season. Even got into the second as well . But it,s time to call it. I at least hope there is a final epoeide no leave you hanging but make it good

If it did nothing else, PB introduced us to a lot of good actors many of us weren't aware of. The heavies were especially interesting, as heavies usually are, and deserving of future featured roles. And there were plenty of heavies. In fact, someone should devise a series in which everybody is a heavy. Wait, maybe that's what soap operas (daytime dramas) are.

about time ... the first season was great then it started to get worse and worse . (get out of prison then get back in) what a waste of time !!!
the only reason the show got this far is because the great acting by mahone and t-bag...

    thank god it will end..

One of the best shows of it's time. The show as always is a cliff-hanger in almost all it's episode. However, Season 3 shouldn't have been included. And I agree with Jlobrown. But in short.. this is a great show!

Awesome show, was dragged out too long, season 4 was worth watching, last decent season will conclude a brilliant show, happy endings would be cool, they came along way...

About time. What was an excellent show and creative premise has gotten lame. Back in a prison? A whole season breaking out? I was loyal enough to PVR last fall's episodes, but couldn't get around to watching them until the holidays, out of desperation as I made presents. OK, they were good, and this scylla revenge plot actually makes sense. So I'll watch the rest, but they should have done this long ago. Let the show end with dignity, and high ratings, and give something new a chance. Fox has shown they can think way out of the box (cop/medical/legal/teen drams), and the viewers have shown we'll watch if it's good. PS Could we have a positive ending? Sarah, Michael, Lincoln, Mahone, Sucre can't go back to their old lives since they've changed so much, but could they at least ride off in the proverbial sunset to something good, after all this aggravation and suffering inflicted on basically good people? (Tbag and Gretchen can go to jail, where they belong!)moreless

It would have been better to end it with closure after season 2. If they wanted to keep it interesting they should have done away with the season 3 story where they go BACK to prison(SONA). After the Manhunt season they should have went straight into the Scylla story.

    Jan 25, 2009

Well that was expected. I hope Michael would return in some other season with similar sort of action and drama.

  • tvismyescape22

Awww... well I hope something really good happens in the finale like Michael and Sarah getting married and Lincoln and LJ and that Spanish girl (forgot her name) become a family, also a happy ending for every else, even T-Bag. What can I say? I'm a sucker for happy endings!
