Prison's break shortened, Battlestar moved

The fight against the Cylons is moving to Sundays.

Sci Fi Channel has announced it will move critically acclaimed drama Battlestar Galactica from Fridays to Sunday nights at 10 p.m. beginning January 21. Season three of the space opera is down slightly in the ratings this season, with 2.1 million weekly viewers compared to 2.3 million last season.

Sci Fi executives said the network wants to make Sunday a destination inight for sci fi lovers. Sci Fi will premiere its new series The Dresden Files at 9 p.m. January 21, before Galactica.

Fox announced it will bring Prison Break back from a scheduled hiatus earlier than expected. The show, which airs a midseason "finale" next week, was originally slated to return in March, as it did last year. Now, the network says it will bring the show back on January 29.

Fox will air the remaining nine episodes of Prison Break without repeats, and then slide a new show into the time slot in April, according to Variety. This will give Fox a powerful kickoff to 2007, with Break, 24, and American Idol all returning in the month.

Emm just to let you BSG/DExter fans know..
I love bsg my favurate show on TV dexter is the best new show far better than prison break lost jericho or any of them.

But dexter and BSG wont compete

1.Dexter season 2 starts up in october i think

2.BSG is still finishing season 3 and then season 4 will air later this year because they are making a direct to DVD movie.

we wont have to worry about which one to watch. I hope bsg does not get cancelled

How many people are going to stay in on a Friday night to watch an hour of programming? It doesn't really matter what show it is, with the digital era the viewer can just find a version of it to watch later. And that doesn't seem to count in ratings. Now, how many people are going to stay in on a Friday night to watch 3 hours of programming instead of 1? Probably a greater number, wouldn't you agree? I don't work for a network but us viewers might just know a thing or two about scheduling for success. Do not put a show on a Friday night by itself. A lot of people won't waste their Friday night for an hour of television.

why wouldnt fox bring back pb for season 3 in aug/sep? its rated high, beloved by fans, received well by critics, doesnt go up against another show thats killing it in the ratings..etc.

i have no idea the cost to create the show, but im sure its taking in far more from commercials..etc

Saying Prison Break has been shortened is a bit misleading isn't it? Its still the same length, just they're not putting a stupidly large gap in the middle for no reason this time...

BSG just doesn't have the staying power, and three seasons in that must come as a shock to its writers and producers. That happens when you over reach yourself and you fail to live up to your potential. The only thing saving this show from crashing and burning on its innagural season was the CGI. The characters are flat and the writing is worse. Sunday just spells the beginning of the end.

Is Fox getting ready to can Prison Break? I have been disappointed with this season, but even so, it would be an abrupt and unwelcomed ending.

I wonder why ABC also moved Boston Legal to Sundays, I just ahte that... I got so used to Tuesdays because it gave me something to look forward to. In any case, I think it's a great move for Galactica, usually I find myself watching dvds on Sundays, so yeah... Go Galactica, Go!

With that lineup, FOX is going to be unstoppable!

its good for a show to have a mid-season break, keeps you on the edge and thinking and you don't get bored of it that easily. good job fox!!

they need to fix bsg to where normal people can understand it.

BSG: Moving a show to a new night this late in its life is a desperation move. Better writing is the solution, not programming tricks.

I hate mid season breaks. keep em rolling.

Moving it to Sunday night will make my recording easier. While my DVR will do two shows at once, my PVR setup (from which I tape my "keepers") will only allow me to tape one show at a time ;-) And there's really nothing I watch on Sunday nights.

Hope it doesn't adversely affect the show. It's good for me, hope it's not bad for the show. But I agree that the way they capture stats and make these decisions is screwed up.

1- that great about prison break cause i think this going be last season cause they should be able wrap it up soon but i believe no repeats when i see it fox said that about the OC once and they show repeats on year and they had no reason cause OC was the 7p and 8p central slots...

2- that might be a mistake to move to Sundays cause lot of great shows are on sundays i agree on what rklrkl said if they want move it do on sat nothing is on that day but repeats of shows

Another bad move on Sci Fi's part. Cancel stargate, huge horrible breaks in the middle of the season, and now breaking up the final remainder of sci fi friday? Yeah...I'm probably not going to be following it anymore. Hell, I'll only buy the DVDs used at gamestop now, since they split season 2 on dvd in half. Forget that. They get none of my money now. Sci Fi Channel is dead. Lets see. MTV...G4...Sci Fi...Thats just great...

maybe they shouldn't have pushed the Season 3 premiere of BSG back so far, and/or maybe should have run more re-runs in the off-season to keep people interested and attract new viewers. I actually liked the time slot it was in; you could still go out after it was over at 10pm if you wanted to. I'll follow it to Sunday though since its my favorite show on right now.

Viewership might not really be down at BSG. Over the past 2 years I've gone from watching it on my own to joining multiple friends. On Friday night I like to go out too so lately none of us have even watched it on one TV because we can use ON Demand hours later. Downloads & ON Demand should be taken into account.

its viewing figures are not down, its simply that the way the figures are measured is idiotic. Im in the U.K. yet i watch BSG every week through a system called SlingMedia which gives me all US TV channels.

im sure there are thousands more like me who do the same, not to mention the hundreds of thousands who use a DVR recorder in the USA to record the show and watch later who are not taken into account in the ratings census and then youve got the people who download the shows on line, sure its illegal but they should still be taken into account as viewers.

let me give you an example of ratings measurement madness... Do you know how many people were surveyed for Enterprise before it was cancelled ?? 500. out of a population of three hundred million people, they surveyd 500 and built a statistical model using that tiny tiny pool of data. this is how utterly ****ed up the ENTIRE US RATINGS SYSTEM IS.

The future of global media in total is not the magical "weekly spot" for any given show. its TV ON DEMAND, the show that YOU want to watch, WHEN you want to watch it and the sooner your mighty dinosaur networks and channels realise this the sooner they can drag their sorry asses into the 21st century and quit worrying about the "nightly" viewing figures.

I don't see why the networks focus so much on what time and night a show is on. Don't they realize that most people have VCR's, DVR's, etc. If I like a show, I will record it and watch it at my convenience, so they can run BSG at 3AM as far as I am concerned.

People keep talking about how bad Sunday shows are but CBS Sunday is my favorite night of the whole week: The Amazing Race, Cold Case, and Without A Trace, and now it will be even more exciting cause I can watch BSG as well!

Moving Battlestar may not be the solution. The show is losing steam.

Sunday is pretty much a death night. Everything gets moved there to die of its own accord. Whenever a network thinks that a show is tanking, it moves it to Sunday so as the ratings plummet, they can feel justified in yanking the plug.

It's a real pity with BSG because it's definitely worth giving full support to it.

Too bad. I really LOVED Battlestar Galactica. Obviously, this is the first sign that it is on the way out. Next thing you know, they'll change the theme song. Then Ted McGinley shows up as the latest Cylon model and here comes the shark.....

I dunno about the rest of you but the only thing I watch on sunday is Family Guy everything thats on sundays right now is either new and pretty bad or old and getting pretty bad and even though I never enjoy timeslot changes BSG has a loyal fanbase who will move with the show. The only thing that is happening is now people have something to watch at 10 on sundays. Also I hated it being on fridays cause I either work or go out with my friends. Sundays is my in night to catch up on work and now watch BSG so I'm pumped.

honestly we don't care!

I personally hate lost and think that its boring but hey thats just my opinion!

Sunday night is a much tougher period than its current Friday night - let's look:

Current Friday nights:
Battlestar Galactica
Las Vegas

Current Sunday nights:
Boston Legal
Brothers And Sisters
Desperate Housewives
Dexter
The Simpsons

You've got to wonder if this is just a classic "let's shunt it around to a tougher timeslot because its ratings have dropped" bad move from Sci-Fi. Why not move it to Saturday nights - there's *no* show ever worth watching on Saturday nights in the US!

While I like Prison Break returning earlier.. it means it ends earlier, too.. which sucks. Ah well, season 2 started so early i'm not surprised. I hope the slight drop in ratings doesn't mean a cancelation for BSG, either, that show rocks. Hopefully the new timeslot gives sci-fi what they're looking for.

The move to Sunday is definitely a good move for Battlestar Galactica. Just get it off nerd night. It's not your typical scifi show you can put on Friday, because its target audience won't get out anyway. Of course they have to promote the new time slot heavily, otherwise it could turn into a disaster.

Wow Sci-fi is messing up more and more....they must have someone new in charge. First they choose to not renew SG1, then break-up Sci-fi friday of SG1, Atlantis and Battlestar...by far the strongest three hour block on TV. I used to tune in live and watch all three together. Now I forget that battlestar is on most of the time and catch the Tivo when I'm looking for what taped. I cant find a new Eureka, Ghost hunters, Doctor Who sucks with the new guy, and now Battlestar moves to Sunday night and competes with Football.....ha ha ha...yeah I'm sure. Sci-fi just lost a viewer. The last season of SG1 will be my last season watching Sci-fi. I'm deleting them from my channels.

The move of BSG to Sunday nights isn't the best news for BSG (or for any show for that matter). The migration of shows tends to lose viewers. However, the BSG fans are diehards.

SciFi is actually taking a risk, and it's a risk that's reasonable. BSG has been losing "viewers" on Friday nights, but it's been doing remarkably well on the TIVO+7 viewings (that is, someone records it then watches it later in the week). Unfortunately, that's not good news for advertisers, as TIVO skips commercials. SciFi is trying to get a boost in viewership as more people are at home on Sunday evenings as opposed to Friday evenings (and with BSG's younger demo, the migration to Sunday should give BSG a ratings boost and corresponding **revenue** boost). That's right. SciFi is trying to boost revenue.

It's a good idea, and it's got a combo with Dresden Files. It should help the other show as well. It's a risky calculation, but I think it will pan out. Seriously-- how many sci-fi jocks are going to watch Desperate Housewives or Cold Case or The War at Home?

I was delighted to hear Prison Break will be back in January. After reading this article I was super excited to see it could have been March and that would have sucked. Yeah for Fox!

I'm glad that Prison Break is coming back earlier than had expected.. But I liked having BSG on Fridays.. Hopefully though it will pull in more viewers on Sunday though.. Battlestar is truly one of the best shows on television right now

Now though I have a conflict in the Sunday timeslot.. My new favorite show Dexter also airs Sunday @ 10..

There is going to be a third season of Prison Break. They are already mapping it out. FOX has not renewed it yet but ratings are just as good as ever, so it is a no brainer to renew it.

I never understood the winter hiatus with tv shows... Around X-Mas is when I want to watch a lot more tv but all that is on are bad X-Mas specials and repeats.

It's a good move for Fox bringing Break back sooner. I know that I like my routine. The longer a show is on hiatus the more likely it is to lose viewers to shows that are actually playing new episodes.

The odds of a Prison Break Season 3 are so slim anyway, so I don't think that matters much.

So glad not to have to wait an unbearable 4 months for the return of prison break. On the other hand, it means we have to wait longer in between for season 3.
