Ratings: 24 and Heroes head-to-head

Jack Bauer is not superhuman, but he has superhuman competition.

Last night, Fox's 24, which returned last week for its sixth season, faced off against NBC's new hit Heroes, which returned with its first new episode in a month. When the dust settled, both shows were still standing, Heroes just a bit taller.

The face-off proved both shows can survive. Heroes scored a 6.5 rating/15 share in 18-49s, with 14.8 million average viewers, according to Nielsen, while 24 snagged a 5.4 in 18-49s, with 14.4 million viewers.

At 8 p.m., NBC made a good Deal or No Deal for a 5.2 rating. Fox scored a 4.2 for the return of Prison Break, and ABC earned a 3.5 for Wife Swap. CBS took a combined 3.3 for How I Met Your Mother and The Class. The CW scored a combined a 1.1 for Everybody Hates Chris and All of Us.

At 9 p.m., NBC soared with a 6.5 for Heroes. Fox scored a 5.4 for 24, and CBS took a combined 4.5 for Two and a Half Men and The New Adventures of Old Christine. ABC earned a 3.6 for Supernanny, and CW scored a combined 1.1 for Girlfriends and The Game.

At 10 p.m., CBS scored a 6.0 for CSI: Miami. NBC took a 3.2 for the return of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and ABC earned a 2.6 for What About Brian.

24 rocks even in season 6. Heroes seem to be falling, started off with a lot more promise, losing viewers at a quick pace. I wonder if Heroes can last 5 seasons, unlike the everlasting 24.

You can't beat heroes the last two episodes were just phenomenal. The writing the production the acting. Tell me if any of you were not moved from that last scene. Thank you NBC for giving us "NERDS" something to watch without a having a guilty conscience afterwards.

Dont get HEROES here yet. As I can see and read Heroes is in it's first series so everyone is going to watch to see what all the fuss is about. 24 is in series 6 and has a hugh fan base and I am afraid wins hands down for me.

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is what a DVR is for....We can have Heroes and 24 at the same time. Isn't that great?

"HEY BECKSCHOLES: Those ratings you posted were for Jan 15-21st. HEROES VS 24 HAPPENED ON JAN 22ND. Heroes WAS VICTORIOUS. And it's amazing how Heroes... in only 1 season has gathered more viewers then 24 has in 6 seasons. LOL"funny.. 24 started out with 8 million and improved to 14-15 million.. lets see if Heroes can do the same.. i think thats.. yeah, about 21 million. Doubt Heroes can pull that off, no matter how popular it is

Heroes being a new show makes the accomplishment so much better.

Heroes has manage to gather more viewers in only 1 season... then 24 has in 6.

Heroes is a new show and pulling peopel's attetion now but i think it's gonna be different after a couple episodes...hEROES NEVER CAN BEAT 24 :) never...also i think they are not related shows, heroes is sci-fi, 24 is a drama...i'll always watch 24 and record heroes...

This is really a bad idea, both shows will probably take ratings hits...or at least end up splitting (as half tape one and half tape the other).

But I've watched 24 since before Heroes was around, and I'm staying loyal to it. Heroes is interesting, but I was just getting into it during the reruns on SciFi and now it's up against the one "can't miss" show I have.

And really, both shows have their strengths and weaknesses. But to say that Jack is the only good thing on 24 is pretty much ignoring the kind of focus that characters such as Chloe and the Palmer family have been getting.

This season may be a bit rocky at first, as last year they killed off quite a few of the orginal cast (David Palmer and Tony Almedia most noteably).moreless

The only character that shows any character development in 24 is Jack Bauer. No one else matters.

In Heroes... EVERYONE matters. Same thing with Lost. 24 focuses on action and suspense, whereas Heroes focuses on plot and character development.

Heroes, well I don’t think so. I love sci-fi series (since original star trek to smallville, sg-1, galactica, and so on) I was pretty interested to watch heroes for all these fuse and reviews. When I saw the first 2 episodes, well, same all same. Hero is not a complete sci-fi pack but it has mixture of action pack with scifi pack. Writers, as usual seems to repeat themselves when some kind of sci-fi is involved. Anyway, I also watch some 24 episodes because all the fuse about that and well, that show it is much better written and has better character development (plus the actors are doing a nice job) Even against Lost (where many think Lost is a big deal) 24 comes first. No wonder why 24 appeared on Larry King Show. Anyway, it is easier to compare Lost with 24 than Hero with 24. They (Hero & 24) have mainly completely different audiences. Moreover, it is not an easy task either to compare Lost with 24 again with the type of audience who watch each show.moreless

....after SIX season , 24 are still able to maintain viewership...and only lost 0.4 to Heroes..
Not many shows can do that.

I wonder did Heroes are stilla ble to maintain the viwership in Season 6. Just have to wait and see.

Im honestly tired of all the 24 vs Heroes competion two totally different shows, that attract two totally different audiences. Im a fan of 24 but thats me I dont go around saying Heores sucks because theres no point. I know what I prefer and I dont care what the ratings are they dont dictate what I watch.

fallenepitaph has it right. There are some nights where I would watch so many shows but the networks think they need to offset each other's great shows with one another. Quite frankly if they would just make one at 8 one at 9 and another at 10 or move nights that would be great.

    Heroes > 24.

I think 24 is getting too predictable.

I watched Heroes at 7, Prison Break at 8, 24 at 9, CSI Miami at 10. Phew! Action packed that's for sure. Ratings, ratings, isn't it what we enjoy about the shows that keep us going to them. Something for everybody.

I tried watching Heroes before 24 started again, but I guess I didn't play enough Dungeons & Dragons as a kid, because that show is ridiculous. (Flying people, save the cheerleader, save the world?) It's obvious that the world of Scientology is among us, and it's getting better ratings than 24!!

I'm just glad I live in Canada, Global networks broadcasts both Heroes and 24, it's perfect, i get to watch heroes at 9:00 and 24 at 10:00. There's no way to compare the shows they're both entertaining in different ways, 24 is full on action where as Heroes is story driven, you just need to find out what's next.

    I love em both.

I'm a fan of both shows. It just bugs me when shows that I like are pit against each other to...what? Prove a point? Force me to choose?

I'm going to have to make sure to get a dual-tuner DVR next time.

can't really compare these two shows. One is a political thriller and the other pure, sci fi action fun.My vote goes to Heroes, never the less. Wander what will happen when Sylar decide to go after Hiro..."Go Heroes" and "Waiting for Lost..."

Great news for Heroes! 24 is this huge, blockbuster, cultural phenomenon show, while Heroes is still the untried rookie with a theme that historically hasn't been so well-regarded by mainstream audiences, I was afraid Heroes would lose badly. A win for a small margin is spectacular!

I love how all the guys with Jack Bauer on their avatars are making up excuses for why 24 lost in the ratings battle against Heroes.

lol. heroes with all the hype could only beat 24 by a 400 000 viewers? not to mention heroes REPREMIERED, whilst 24 only had a 'regular' episode.

nice to see heroes is doing so good...and topping 24 is pretty cool...i really didnt expect that (altho Heroes is the best new show from last year).anyways im not watching 24 atm because im recording the episodes and am going to watch em when all came out...
