Raymond's Patricia Heaton gets pilot

Remember this episode? Me neither.

It wasn't a matter of whether Patricia Heaton would be returning to television; it was a matter of when and which studio would be lucky enough to have one of traditional sitcoms' leading ladies starring in one of their shows. ABC has given the green light to shoot the pilot for the The Middle, a new vehicle for Heaton.

Heaton, of course, is best known as the sensible Debra to Ray Romano's goofy title character in Everybody Loves Raymond. The 50-year-old actress (editor's note: 50!?!?) was last seen on Fox's Back to You with Kelsey Grammer, but the newsroom sitcom was canceled before airing an entire season.

The two-time Emmy-winning Heaton won't have to stray too far from her sitcom roots for The Middle. The comedy stars Heaton as a mom in a Midwestern middle-class family.

Where does Patricia Heaton rank on your list of television moms?

I enjoyed Back to You and she still looks great for 50!

The success of Everybody Loves Raymond is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and I think that actors who are involved in shows like that make a mistake when they try to repeat that success. I do truly hope that her new show does well. She is a good actress, and it sounds like a plot that a lot of people would be interested in seeing. Still, it would be kind of silly to expect it to top Raymond.

50 may be the new 30, but every guy out there still prefers 22...

That show sounds horrible. Mom in a Midwestern middle-class family. If I wanted to see that I would go to Idaho. Her ELR fame is up,so this show will go the same way Back To You did. And that show had Kelsey Grammer.

I'm so happy Patty signed on to do this pilot! I was hoping that she would. I hope ABC will give it the time of day to develop. Although I'm happy for her and the show, I'm disappointed it's at the expense of the brilliant but canceled show Back To You.

she's likable and actually has an acting ability, and i thought back to you wasn't a bad show and could've done with an entire season at least. its nice to see her step out of that housewife role so i don't really like that she's going back a step.

I think she is just really likable and will make a good Midwestern mom.

She's not horrible, but definitely one of the most overrated females in sitcom history. She was the weak link of ELR. How most scenes went: You'd laugh at something Ray said, then something Robert said, Debra would say something and you wouldn't laugh and then Marie would say something and you'd laugh.

She's great. I'm looking forward to her new show. Any new comedy is a refreshing change of pace these days. And Ed., 50 is the new 30, baby!
