She's played an optimistic single in Pulling and an unusual superhero in No Heroics... TV.com talks to Rebekah Staton, and brings you the latest on Channel 4's newest comedies.
As down-to-earth as she is modest, the former
We met up with Rebekah Staton as she promoted her latest comedy pilot for Channel 4, where she plays the doting girlfriend of a man recently released from Guantanamo Bay after a misunderstanding on a bird-watching holiday. "It's refreshing because they're so loved up," explained the 28-year-old actress whose previous roles often saw her fail spectacularly in matters of the heart. "I feel like it's been a while since we've seen anything where the two leads were so crazy about each other," she added. "Of course we're making a silly show about a bird watcher who's been in Guantanamo Bay, but what we're also doing is we're trying to put forward two very positive people in a world that often puts you down... I think at the moment comedy is important because people need to laugh; they need a bit of positivity."
Guantanamo Phil, which is yet to be picked up for a full series, will be shown later this autumn and sees her star alongside Star Stories' Phil Mill who is mistaken for a terrorist by US troops while on holiday in Afghanistan.
Although other British celebrities are having difficulty finding work at the moment, Staton is having no trouble at all. As well as starring in Guantanamo Phil she also has a film, starring Matt Damon, in the pipeline. The movie will see her play a social worker called Clare, though she admits: "I can't promise I'll be in it very much, but I'll be there."
This has been Staton's busiest year for work, despite many British actors including EastEnders' Rob Kazinsky and Cold Feet's James Nesbitt claiming they've considered moving abroad because of the lack of roles in this country. "I've seen quite the opposite," she admits: "I'm sorry for friends that it hasn't been a busy year for, but when you're not looking for things sometimes life looks up."
Her Pulling co-stars Sharon Horgan and Andrew Brooke are also starring in new comedy pilots for Channel 4 this November. Horgan plays a waitress in The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret while Brooke plays a shop worker in PhoneShop. Collectively the shows make up part of the channel's comedy showcase, which last year saw the commission of Plus One, The Kevin Bishop Show and Free Agents.
