In a pilot season full of shows featuring the typical (hot, young lawyers/doctors/high-schoolers!), borrowed (adaptations by the boatload!), and rehashed (J.J. Abrams' X-Files 2.0!), at least one show stood out as a daring unique drama: Ryan Murphy's Pretty Handsome.
Murphy, the brains behind FX's raunchy and gut-wrenching Nip/Tuck, received a pilot order from FX for Pretty Handsome, a show about a man who realizes he is a transsexual and opts for gender-reassignment surgery. Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love) and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) were assigned the leads, and things were looking up for the controversial show.
But apparently the project has stalled and may be an early casualty of the fall season. The Hollywood Reporter reports that FX passed on the show, costar Christopher Egan has moved on to NBC's Kings, and that Pretty Handsome has hit "the end of the road."
20th Century Fox Television, the producers of the show, have reportedly tried to shop the show around to other networks, none of which are biting.
Surely, with the outstanding cast and Murphy's pedigree, someone will roll the dice on the promising show, right? We're not ready to throw dirt on Pretty Handsome yet, but at the same time, we won't keep our hopes up--we've been hurt before.
Sex sells, but apparently transsex doesn't.
If you want to check out a clip and make your own decision, YouTube has a few previews of Pretty Handsome for screening (probably TV-MA material), and the pilot has allegedly leaked online. Have a peek at the previews and voice your opinion below!
