Revenge Season 4 Premiere Review: The More Things Change, the More they Stay the Same

Revenge S04E01: "Renaissance"

Revenge is back and I'm conflicted about a number of things that happened in "Renaissance," but overall, I think I liked the episode? It was hard for me to concentrate when Nolan's hair was in such a desperate state—I just wanted to grab his face and drag him to the nearest bathroom and wet it down like a good friend would do (honestly, Emily should've been concerned because that hair is obviously a cry for help)—but I powered through the episode. And once I got over the follow-up shock of Margaux's new blonde 'do, I started coming around on a few things, like the idea that Emily doesn't know how to spend her time now that she's accomplished her goals, so she's trying to exact revenge for people who don't even want revenge. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's break it down...

Emily moved... next door

A lot can change in six months, apparently. Emily is now living in Grayson Manor, which isn't actually called Grayson Manor anymore since no Graysons live there, but whatever. Forgive me if the summer hiatus has erased the answer from my brain, but where did Emily get enough money to buy that house? Or did the mayor of South Hampton just say, "Thank you for your hard work, please take this mansion as a sign of our thanks and respect for all you did to rid the world of the two most interesting people this town has ever known"? You know what, not important. The main thing to take away from Emily's storyline this week is that she's a human being without a cause right now. For so long, all she wanted to do was destroy the Graysons and clear her father's name, and now that she's finally done that (R.I.P. Conrad, I miss you like crazy you little bastard), she's got no direction in life. All she's done lately is take on the responsibility of hosting the annual Memorial Day Party and live in Grayson Manor. And it looks like that Season 4 trailer wasn't lying, because from where I sit, Emily is well on her way to becoming Victoria (albeit without a conniving, seriously unhinged husband). All of which is to say: Seeing Emily with no purpose is why I wish Revenge would've concluded with that crazy Season 3 finale (and it sounds like star Emily VanCamp agrees with me). It's not pretty. Revenge-ing for the sake of revenge does not a good story make.

Victoria escaped... only to be captured

Victoria is free from the psychiatric hospital Emily that admitted her to in the Season 3 finale after just one episode—which was a smart move on the writers' part, because a locked up Victoria is more boring than whatever scheme Margaux's brother Gideon is cooking up (coking up?). However, she's been newly chloroformed by David Clarke, who's hiding out in his old house like... like... I don't know, whatever it is that hides. I have no idea what's going to come of this development between the former lovers (what does he even want with her? Does he want to punish her now, too?) but it'd better not involve Vee falling back into his arms unless she's also wielding a steak knife and lunging for his heart. I know, she assisted Conrad in framing David—a man she claimed to have loved, and with whom she had a child—for international terrorism, so if anyone should be getting stabbed by cutlery it should probably be Victoria, but I will never allow that to happen because then Revenge would be incredibly dull, and because I take issue with a man who lets his daughter do his dirty work. Man up, David Clarke!

Anyway, you've got to hand it to Victoria, because who else would befriend Lisa Simpson, convince Lisa Simpson to help her stage an escape, steal a woman's beautiful clothing (because that couldn't have been Vee's actual dress, right? They wouldn't have let her keep that?), and strut out of a psychiatric hospital like a baller with a clear plastic umbrella? No one, that's who. But if Revenge attempts a David/Victoria romance of any kind this season, I'm going to throw up all that fancy champagne I guzzled at Emily's party, because the only true love on this show is between Nolan and his sailor boys. Or maybe Nolan and Emily, but eww, not that kind of love.

Daniel is poor... and Charlotte is as dumb as a sack of rocks

So Daniel doesn't have any money and he's selling all his stuff in order to give off the appearance that he didn't go down with the sinking ship that was the S.S. Conrad. Plus, he's bankrolling Charlotte's drug habit without even realizing it. Also, there's still that whole dead hooker thing from the finale, which is still just as boring to me today as it was then, so let's move on...

Oh wait, no. I have one more thing to say: GET A JOB YOU LAZY ASS.

Jack fulfilled his lifelong dream of... becoming a cop

That's right, Jack is now a cop, which is apparently something he's wanted for awhile now, but seems silly because I don't recall Jack ever mentioning that he wanted to join the men in blue. Anyway, things aren't going so great now that he let Charlotte off for doing cocaine in Emily's billiards room in front of his training officer (Brian Hallisay, who you might remember from Privileged and not The Client List). Smooth move, bro. That's probably going to win you a ton of points back at the police academy or whatever. Regardless, I like that Emily has an inside man in law enforcement now, and honestly, Revenge probably should've done that before, because you know that's going to come in handy.

Nolan is... Nolan, and still the person who knows Emily best

For all my problems with Nolan's hair this week (is he going through a Christopher Walken phase?), he's still got Emily's back no matter what, and he's still the one person who can call her on her bullshit without fear of red sharpie retaliation. He recognized her inability to stop scheming and called her on it, but he truly has her best interests at heart, and that's why they're still the best relationship on Revenge. He wants to help her readjust to a non-revenge lifestyle, and I hope, in turn, she will eventually sit him down and tell him that his hair looks awful. It's a symbiotic relationship that these two have, so Emily needs to stop shutting Nolan out and just ask for his help in figuring out who she is now.

Oh, and he also bought her a "throne" of her own for Grayson manor. It looks a lot more comfortable than Queen Victoria's old one, which is a plus, but it also further proves my point about Emily possibly becoming the new Victoria.

So where does all that leave us?

Overall, I think I enjoyed this fresh new start to Season 4, and I think it's for one reason and one reason only: Emily wasn't scheming to destroy the Graysons. That storyline went on about a season too long, in my opinion, and I'm glad to be rid of it. Now that Victoria is free, though, I wonder how long it will be until Emily starts plotting against her again—she wasn't at all surprised, and even looked a bit happy, to see Victoria show up at her door in the episode's final moments—and that worries me. Screw Charlotte's drug issues, the real addict here is Emily, and she's addicted to the adrenaline rush she experiences when she takes someone down. I don't know what I want from Revenge Season 4, but I know I don't want to see Emily back at war with Victoria. I don't want to rehash the same old storylines again and again, so here's hoping that David Clarke can take this show in a new direction (even if I think bringing him back from the dead was a terrible mistake).

NOTES

– Um, check out this guy checking out Nolan's butt.

– Who wore it better? Emily Thorne or former Teen Wolf star Crystal Reed?

What did you think of "Renaissance"?

Sooooo are we not getting a review for this past episode? I really wanted to discuss the physics behind Victoria running that fast through the woods in those heels without breaking an ankle.

Well, the whole that the last scene of Emily walking out the psychiatric hospital should have been the end, maybe that is why I didn't bother want to watch in until my catch up Sunday morning marathon. I was actually dreading it. Now, I am kind of meh. I suppose I didn't bother to watch any trailers for the season, but I can't even imagine what is going to happen. I certainly don't want to watch an uncomfortable attempt at take down of Gideon by Daniel and Margaux that will inevitably rope in Jack and Nolan out of concern of Charlotte and the two of them think this might be the perfect methodone for Emily. I know people couldn't stand Aiden, but I think I will find it uncomfortable to watch any romance develop between Emily and Jack's partner. I'm wondering, maybe David Clarke has gone insane? Maybe he has some twisted image of a family with Victoria, Emily and Charlotte and he pulls Nolan along as Emily's de facto brother. I don't know. Next week we will see if it makes something close to live viewing but tonight, Witches of East End and the Strain are having their season finales (please let WoEE be season finale only). Next week Sunday gets much, well, sort of calmer, yes Walking Dead is back, but there is less volume.

I agree, this season had a fresh start. Maybe we should see Emily turning into Victoria and Nolan trying to convince her out of that wrong way meanwhile the things become hot and NEMILY team reunites for defense against Vicky's wrath. Though most of the characters seem pointless for now - Daniel is broke and I don't see any hopes for his storyline meanwhile Charlotte's only way to make her story interesting is to learn that Emily is her sister, then they can unite and Charlotte won't be pointless anymore. Margaux has potential into teaming up with Emily while Nolan...I miss seeing his ingenious skills, now he's only been wasting money and time, also crying on Emily's shoulder. Wow I think there's gonna be hurricane in the hamptons I hear the winds howling here... Hope the wind blows Revenge's hamptons like here and change the things. About David... THEY BETTER TREAD LIGHTLY WITH HIS STORYLINE AND NOT SCREW IT UP like other characters became pointless and boring.

You know what this show reinds me of? Slasher movies. No, seriously, but not of reason you may think.

Consider this. Slashers take a concept. It's an old concept, already done thousands of times. then they make a movie. And it's good. Studio sees it did well so they make a sequel. It's not as good as first one but it goes down well. Then they make another sequel. And another. Along the way they lose the sight of original concept and try to adapt. In the end sequels become mockery of themselves. But new sequels are made to make money, even if there is less and less of it

Now Revenge. They took a concept. Monte Cristo has been done numerous times. So they tried another go. and it went well. Then it was another season. and another. In the process they lost the sight of original concept. But new seasons keep getting filmed.

I've said in the past that Revenge should have been planned with finite number of episodes. Two seasons, considering that they way show went that's basically what happened. If you ignore season 2 (which did basically nothing to further the plan) then season 1 and 3 were what Emily/Amanda tried to do, did it and how it turned out. I agree season 3 finale would be perfect ending, minus David showing up. Conrad in jail, Victoria in asylum, Daniel going down and Charlotte trying to deal with it all. Aiden dead just to show that revenge comes with a price and Emily/Amanda paid it.

But now..... I don't know. I think original story has been picked clean of anything that would be connected to original point. OK, we'll have Victory/Emily showdown. But Emily had three things going for her: money, plan and surprise since nobody knew who she really was. Victoria has none of that and any move she'll made will be watched, analysed and Emily will know she's actually planning to bring her down.

I'll see how this is played but don't have high hopes. I just hope writers have endgame in mind and are working toward it so they end up on their terms with ending being written with end of series in mind rather than planning to string this along for 2 or more season only to see the ax fall after this season.

Why so much hate? This season has a lot of potential. Revenge has improved after Season 2 mess. The new show runner is focusing on Victoria vs Emily which the show is all about. C'mon if you all are going to criticize the season, it should not be by the character's style and wear. David planned his "death" but he was alive all this time and I think the prison guard helped him. Now it's his turn to seek revenge. Some of you are asking questions which were answered in the premiere. I guess some of you were not really paying attention. I think David already knows that Emily is Amanda and that he is faking it. Critics loved the premiere.

I love revenge! The characters, the wardrobe , the fancy cars and homes and the plot all make it a hit. They took mostly unknown characters and made a hit. Better than watching realty shows with people eating flies or being naked in the wild. With the right scripts they can keep going. Dallas lasted almost twenty years on the air (original one). You have to love Nolan and the chemistry with Emily. I hope they bring back Gail OGrady. They could clean up Emily's father and have a new storyline while introducing new characters.

The show is good despite silly writing because "Emily" is an excellent sociopath. Even when she's "connecting" with her "friends" it's just to reinforce their loyalty so she can exploit them. She's like Jax in SOA - that "happily ever after" path always seems just around the corner, but the reality is that it never existed at all. There's only one possible ending for characters like that and it ain't pretty. The trick is to keep watchers believing the impossible could somehow happen so they'll keep rooting for their doomed hero despite all faults...

I'm worried Vicky will be spreading lies about Emily to David, and pitting father against daughter. I assume he knows Emily is Amanda, but he looked a bit confused when he saw her at the beach house. I don't know, but I hope it doesn't take too long for Em to find out about David's miraculous resurrection, and I agree, no Vicky/David romance please, I mean how could you ever want to get involved with the woman who helped frame you for terrorism.

I actually liked Charlotte as a character in the beginning of the series. I think where they have taken her is way out on the edge of the fringe that is "could possibly happen on a day reality is not paying attention". Charlotte the Bad Ass just doesn't wash, at all.

To many wrong things, and unless there is a plan, the first episode didn´t achieve much more than confusion. Why did Emily let Victoria escape? She is stronger and could have detained her until somebody came to get her.
Still, Emily living Victoria´s life seems out of place. Jack being a cop is another twist where the writers exhibit that Jack should have died in season one, because after that, Jack has been placed in senseless side-story lines. Being a cop the worst. Unless there is a plan I can not see where this season is going to go, and like Emily´s plan in this episode, it doesn't seem to be any good plan for Revenge. The worst end for Revenge would be David and Victoria living together happily ever after. No please!

And the game goes on... The roles might had been switched, but the plot is exactly the same. The wheel of revenge begins another turn and this time David Clark is back to to do to Victoria the same thing Emily/Amanda did. But I think in some point the old flame is going to spark again, which will put the three main pieces in a very delicate position on the board. Victoria seeking revenge on Emily/Amanda, David trying to save Emily/Amanda from herself and Emily/Amanda struggling to put her inner vengeful demon back in the bottle.
That will be interesting.

I have NEVER understood Margeaux's hair. Now is no exception. In fact, why is she still there? Don't like her. Don't need her.

I am waiting for the show to do something neat and interesting but so far I don't see anything like that. Jack...a cop? Get real! Charlotte...they waste her character so much, she could be interesting instead of annoying and I have no idea why they keep making her annoying. I personally wanted to see more of Victoria suffering in the ward. Like forced shock therapy or making her stay in solitary isolation.

The new Emily revenge plan didn't work for me. It was....well it wasn't. Meh. I still miss the chair.

I"m sorry Revenge But i'm Done. This episode was terrible.

lets forget the stupid "David Clarke is alive" thing that makes the last 3 seasons inconsequential, but the episode actually destroyed Emily's character. Why on earth would she move into that house??? both her and Nolan were acting like such pampas money splashing, no better than the Greysons, twats!!!

SERIOUSLY Emily???, instead of spending time with your sister and making right the wrongs you committed against her, you're gonna wear the Victoria crown and throw some lavish party for the Hampton folks, the same type of people we loath really???.

And FYI Emily if you want to help people who need revenge, aim for the 99% not some chick in the Hamptons whose boyfriend died because of some convoluted storyline!!!.

This was so poorly done. This writing is like daytime soap level, but even those soaps shake things up a little. this Series was suppossed to be Max 2 seasons. They've run this revenge theme straight to the ground. i don't care about Jack,Gideon,Charlotte (drugs AGAIN??),Margo and Daniel, none of it,don't care.

(Shout out to the deliciously fun season 1) goodbye and good luck to the people who choose to suffer through 21 more episodes of this TRIPE!!!!!

We know that Emily did not stay in the beach house because of what happened to Aiden. What wrong things did Emily do to Charlotte? All the problems were caused by her family (Declan's & Amanda's death). The only thing she did was kidnap her but she did not even do anything to her.

It seems to me after reading this that the show is over. We wanted Revenge and we got it. So why are we still here? The Hamptons are pretty, but we've got Royal Pains for that, don't we? And don't say Royal Pains isn't good, because this isn't either. Scandalous behavior without purpose isn't all that much fun, is it? I like that Nashville...

Exactly.

I guess I'm one of the few who didn't expect to it to end after her revenge was completed. The whole point of the past two seasons was Emily finally beginning to pay the price of her Revenge. And how far she'd go to get it - and that was farther than she thought it the beginning.

No plan survives first contact with the enemy and she's got to start accepting the price of her revenge, and that comes with the fact that people want payback for what she did ... thus continuing the cycle.

So frankly, I think we're finally seeing Emily get payback, and frankly, if you think about it, she deserves more than a little.

LMFAO.. this review was completely funny and bs
(that ems got her revenge and now she's doing it for other people)
she just empathized with her and wanted to help her
and is there something wrong with u, Nolan's hair were perfect, the best I've seen yet, btw margaux's hairstyles sucked
plus Emily vs. Victoria this is the basic theme of show & i love it
and as far as u r concerned with Emily becoming Victoria, its obnoxious, i think u r forgetting what happened in the first 3 seasons, what about that awful things Victoria did including killing 3 people Helen crowley, the man who raped her and aiden, Emily's hands are clean she did make people's lives miserable but only if they deserved it
bring back david wasn't a great move but still it opens new horizons for synopsis and i'm so ready to find what david was doing all this time and now what's gonna be his relationship with ems and vic
as Emily VanCamp said a show with name revenge is very hard to continue for 4 seasons but so far directors have done a great job, and its one of the best shows out there, there's a mystery thrill elegance ems and vic here
see what's up with tvd, they r dragging the same boring story for 6 seasonz, elena switching sides and people dying and being resurrected
revenge has totally changed the synopsis from this season
seriously obsessed with show, love Emily VanCamp

"Charlotte is as dumb as a sack of rocks"

Nothing new on that front then. I wish someone would tell her that whenever she trusts someone, she is wrong, because the person is in fact a backstabbing, lying POS. And whenever she doesn't trust someone, she is wrong again, because the person is in fact just looking after Charlotte and trying to keep her safe, even though he/she has to lie to her in the process.

I can't believe I thought even for a moment that it would be Victoria in the trunk. Victoria would NEVER.

I get it that Margaux is the French lady with the unconventional european style, but her hair is just AWFUL. Wrong haircut, wrong shade, was her stylist drunk?

Also, for some reason I dind't absolutely love the clothes on Emily and Victoria, and I usually drool over the dresses when I watch Revenge. And the lipstick shades were a bit off. I am really worried about the styling this season.

I hope they have worked out a storyline for David that doesn't include a happy ending with Victoria, or else a new Dexter-catastrophe is on the way. Also known as "the-worst-final-season-ever".

I also hope Amanda has a HUGE fight with David for leaving her alone. If he plays the insanity card, I'm out.

I guess Charlotte stays till the end, so they can be happy sisters with Amanda, but I wish they would kill her off. Worst character of the series, zero development and honestly, bad acting. I don't even know why Charlotte is still on the show. I wouldn't even notice if she were gone.

Poor Nolan. I hope he ends up with a nice guy and they have 4 kids.

So what have we learned from this weeks episode:
Apparently it takes less than 6 months to become a cop in america.
Apparently america has mental institutions that lock people up with no possibility for outside communication.
Apparently it necessary to bring people back from the dead to justify another season of a show that should have ended last season.
Can't wait to see what's next.

Victoria's escape was flawless. Her ability to manipulate people is a true asset and I think it will come in handy with the whole David Clarke situation, which I'm really torn about. I'm really disappointed they brought him back, but on the other hand I think it has the potential to breathe new life in the show and take it in a whole new direction. And shit is about to get so real from the looks of next episode's promo. If Emily does in fact reveal she's Amanda to Charlotte, I can see a battle of Victoria/David vs. Emily/Charlotte coming. And I wouldn't mind watching that at all. As much as I love Revenge and its ridiculous nature, I really hope this season's is its last and I have a feeling it will be. So long as they keep the pace that this first episode set, I would be completely fine with that. In the end I just want a giant bloodbath full of revengey brilliance, that's all.

Classic Revenge. I was somewhat on the fence but I think I'm going to like this season. Based on what Victoria said about 'if you had only come clean then, you could've known the truth', I think she knew about David Clarke being alive. In fact, she might even be the one to help faked his murder (by the white-haired man) without Conrad knowing.

The only thing that's still kind of bug me about the whole story is how they deal with Charlotte. Bad Charlotte again with abusing drugs and alcohol? Come on now, that's just so first season. I understand that it will be this gigantic reveal when Charlotte finally learns who Emily really is, but damn it if they could just get to it already. They toyed around last season with Charlotte becoming mini-Victoria with the scheming, etc. and it didn't work at all. Charlotte's been annoying from the beginning but that was when she's this spoiled high school girl. It's way past time to let her finally grow up and be on Team Emily!

Apparently a lot had happened since the end of the third season. There was a lot of catching up to do with Emily, Nolan, Victoria, Jack, Daniel, Charlotte and more. And don't forget the dad who is now dead and the dad who is NOT dead.
Changes for the good of the show. The umbrella scene was a sign of some whimsy ... and of course Nolan is even more over the top these days.

BRILLIANT episode. Completely makes up for last two lackluster seasons so far.

Emily really is such a broken thing.
Amanda Clarke’s life is gone, her reasons to exist are gone, dead, etc.
Emily Thorne’s reasons to exist has always been a mix of battle for survival and conviction to defeat her enemies.

It was never about “protecting people” or “helping people” - hell, her road had a LOT of collateral.

In a way, I guess you could say all the tragedies she suffered burned out Amanda’s empathy or emotional capability beyond very limited sort of things that she CAN feel fulfilled and happy from(and as much as I hate him, buttface Aiden’s deserved death was last straw)

Thus Emily Thorne NEEDS a villain in her story - Without revenge she feels like she is nothing.Ironically, her crusade that she could not wait to finish, IS literally the core of her existence as there’s nothing else.

And just as she realizes that her sociopathic Emily Thorne tendencies need a target, Victoria appears at her doorstep declaring a war. And for first time in whole episode she looks genuinely happy about that.

While I agree with you on Emily's psychoanalysis, I do hope Emily and Victoria team up to go against David since he is the one that put them through hell. I will miss Conrad's aliancies with these two ladies.

Revenge was very good in season one. It got my fully attention and forced me to seat down to watch, quietly on my TV. I don't do that with many shows. Then Revenge got silly in season two. Season three had some weird twisted stories that didn't make much sense, including David Clarke being alive after all what Emily (and fake Amanda, and Nolan and Jack and family and Charlotte and Aiden and Takeda. Just to mention some) went through. I watched some episodes of season two half way to making dinner on my PC, and all the episodes of season three while making dinner, on my PC. I hope season fourth, which should be the last one, would bring me to my chair to watch it with my full attention quietly again. Is there any hope for that?

season 1 was epic, 2 kinda dveviated from the main theme cuz of that initiative but 3 was totally back on track but 4 is gonna be even more awesome with almost all the main characters knowing her true identity vic. charlotte, Daniel's eventually gonna find out this show got me so hooked up that I've watched first 3 seasons for like 3 times already

The writing makes no sense and it really doesn't have to. Victoria's breakout was ridiculously fabulous.

The biggest problem people have with Revenge is that they expect it to be high quality TV. Trim down those expectation and you're in for a ride.

Well... Season 1 kind of spoiled us with that.

Season 1 was high quality TV in my opinion. Everything after that... not as much.

Honestly, though, aside from the main plot, I do not see such a major difference in quality that everyone else sees. It was as soapy than as it is now, but it was a fresh story and there were still many things to explore.

If season 1 spoil you, than season 2 should have done the opposite, and then after season 3 you really should know what to expect.

They really didn't answer any questions about David in the episode, but other than that I LOVED. Don't know why, Revenge doesn't seem to be able to do anything wrong in my book, even when I know they're doing badly... but don't think this was one of those times.

It's was fine. Even though.. nothing happen after all.. we could just skip this episode and watch the second in order to finally begin with this new season.

This was classic revenge all over again. The revenge of season 1 and 2. Fast paced, straight to the point, escapes, takedowns, this episode had it all. I only hope they can keep it up this season with this new twist.
