Rome wasn't built in a day, but it was toppled almost that quickly. After only two seasons, HBO decided to pull the plug on the program and conclude the series in 2007. The critically lauded drama wasn't exactly a ratings hit, but when it came time for awards shows and best-of lists, Rome was front and center.
But as is the trend du jour, Rome may be done on television but not gone for good. Series creator Bruno Heller (who is also behind the fall's biggest new series The Mentalist) spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and gave Rome fans reason to cheer.
"There is talk of doing a movie version [of Rome]," Heller said. "It's moving along. It's not there until it is there. I would love to round that show off."
One seemingly problematic obstacle Rome would need to get over to continue on is the apparent death of one of its lead characters, Lucius (played by Journeyman's Kevin McKidd, now on Grey's Anatomy). But Heller says the strapping soldier may not be dead after all.
"It was deliberate that we saw him drifting away but didn't see him atop a funeral pyre," said Heller.
Turning TV shows into movie wrap-ups has been a hot topic among show creators, with Sex and the City being the only recent success story. Other canceled shows such as Deadwood, Arrested Development, and Pushing Daisies have also been rumored to be possible candidates for the film treatment.

Awesome. I just finished season 2 and was totally glued to the couch!
It needs another series it was entering another exciting period in history a movie wouldnt cut it for me.
.
I loved Rome, and I want more... but I just hope they mean HBO Movie. I'd love to see Rome on the big screen, but it just wouldn't really work. Oh, and I knew Lucius wasn't dead. There is always a reason for showing or not showing a corpse. People just can't seem to figure that out.
WOW! Finally some good news, I was really getting tired of reading about cancellations, schedule-pullings, etc.
Why on earth would they make a movie version of rome? Just like mossoholic asked; How about Buffy & Angel movies instead!Weve been waiting for those for ages now...
How about Buffy, Angel, Carnivale, and Veronica Mars instead?!?!
I want anything that gives me more Rome, but I am wary that a feature film of 2+ hours can really live up to the existing 26 hours of the show. Plus, even if Lucius isn't dead, it seems like they did wrap up the show fairly well. Though they really couldn't go on without Lucius.About the "untimely cancellation" comment, I thought HBO deliberately stopped making it simply because it cost too much and they declared themselves "done".
Yeah, um.... Veronica Mars movie?
I would be happy to go and see this film. I really enjoyed this show.
Interesting, well I hope it happens it was a decent show and deserve a movie to wrap things up.
I always thought it was weird how canceled shows get movies, but I actually like the idea. Serenity and the continuing Stargate movies are great and I hope Rome gets the chance for going out with a movie. Haha... "Boy, is my face red." That's funny :)
Great show, but let it lie. If HBO couldn't even be bothered to wrap up Deadwood with TV movies (what the heck happened to that idea?!), then I can't see them pulling out the stops with Rome.
I cant wait :D
Sound super. Loved that show
Good, it was an enjoyable show and could work as a movie.
if the story is good and the action is up, ill be there...the show was great and all but it tended to drag for me...
It's a good idea, but make it like X-Files movies where you don't need to have watched the show to go see the movie.

It is nice when shows get to have an ending.
That would be awesome. This show was great. But even with it's untimely cancellation, the show wrapped up its stories nicely. As awesome as a movie would be, storywise I'm not sure it really needs it. I thought it ended well. Deadwood on the other hand...
Okay. I'd likely watch it.
