The Royal Pains pilot had something nice going on: two brothers (who actually get along) decide to stay in the Hamptons, hang out with beautiful women and run a private business servicing the rich and famous. But the writers abandoned this idea since the pilot, or at least they've been forced to package the show for popular, widespread consumption. And, man, is that a shame! The show is trying to capture House fans, even mimicking the FOX drama down to the way sick patients are introduced.
Searching for a bit more of an edge, the principled and painfully earnest doctor, Hank Lawson, is moving towards becoming a House-like character. He drops medical terminology like House pops Vicodin and works hard to make practicing medicine seem effortless. Lawson heroically announces "You're going to be fine!" immediately after treatment, as though his patient hadn't been at death's door seconds before. But Lawson could never achieve the angst, hostility and effortless genius that Hugh Laurie so effortlessly exudes. And, unlike Gregory House, we just wouldn't trust him with our lives.
The fourth and latest installment of Royal Pains made a blatant move for House's fan base. We like the initial bromance the brothers have going on, but wish USA would stay away from House, a show they could never hope to emulate.

I like the show. Won`t be nominated for an Emmy anytime soon, but it`s not bad. Does try a bit too hard, I think. I plan to give the writers time to find the niche they`re looking for. But agreed, stay away from House similarites. They`re both medical shows, let the similarities end there!
This commentator , Anna Hiatt, says "Lawson could never achieve the angst, hostility and effortless genius that Hugh Laurie so effortlessly exudes". BUT LAWSON ISN'T WRITTEN TO BE HOSTILE WITH ANGST. The characters House and Hank are NOTHING alike. House has a gruff biting sarcastic edge to him where Hank is sympathetic and has more of a clean-cut, down-to-earth persona. Plus the character of Hank seems to care alot for his patients and goes out of his way to make sure they're treated well. House doesn't have that type of connection with his patients. So if I were to trust anyone of the two doctors with my life it would be a doctor that cares about his patients (Hank) as opposed to a doctor with hostility and angst (House). Plus its funny how the commentator points how Hank Lawson says "You're going to be fine" after treating a patient..... as if thats a bad thing??????(LOL)moreless
they copied a house epi how more lame can they get. its a decent show but i agree with the reviewer its not that awesome.
I agree. It's a shame. If I wanted to watch House, I'd find it or rent the DVD.
These are two different shows. I like them both. House is way more classy, but it doesn't mean that royal pains are no good
Let's see, Greggory House didn't get along with his family, Hank lives with his brother. House works in a hospital, Hank works from home. House has a bevy of doctors at his beckon call, Hank has one assistant. House hates visiting his patients, Hank gets involved with his patients. House is ornery, Hank is upbeat. Other than all that they're exactly the same :)
i like the first show.... the others not as much..... i dont see it being anything like House.......
It's not fair to compare these two shows. For one, the science on this show isn't MADE UP like it is on house, and the characters aren't simply boring cardboard cutouts the way they are on House. House's crap. This show is not.
Well, obviously House is the best medical drama out there. I mean apart from the brilliant writing it does have Hugh Laurie. But that's no reason to artificially drag every other show with a doctor into an apple and pears comparison.
@ Huntzor... My thoughts excactly
Edit from last post: I am a House fan and a Royal Pains fan. So I am not biased in any way.
Latest News? More like latest uninformed crap of an opinion. How can Royal Pains be like House? Does Hank treat his patients like crap and doesn't care what anyone's input would be on the situation? Nope... Does Hank have a whole hospital facility at his disposal instantly without have to go through the correct channels to procure the equipment? Nope... Does Gregory House live with his brother? Nope... Have you even ever watched Royal Pains before your blatant editorial under latest news hit tv.com? My guess is Nope.
i love dis show! cant watch House cuz of da time it shows. Royal Pains helps ease it. but ill pick House over Royal Pains everyday.
I love Royal Pains! I never once thought it was trying to be like House. It's a different idea with different actors, writers, directors, and producers. Sure, they may copy the introduction of the patients, but almost every show introduces the main guest characters this way. They show you the person, lead you the wrong way, and then "shock" you with the character's ailment, murder, or whatnot. Plus, there aren't that many ideas out there, and I think USA put a great spin on the "doctor show" mold. Bravo, USA.
After the hot news item about 30 Rock being awkward comedy, we now have another completely ridiculous, uninformed opinion filed under news. This isn't a review (reviews have substance) and this isn't news (where it's filed under) what the hell is it?This is pretty shoddy material even for the internet's deteriorating definition of "news". What should a doctor say after he saves a patient's life and the patient is, in fact, going to be fine? And how is that a House thing? Isn't a House thing, yelling at the patient and calling them stupid and being unable to comfort them? Have you watched House? Usually it is one of his lackeys doing the comforting, that's kind of the point of the character...he's an ass. And who's this we you keep mentioning?moreless
havent even seen the pilot, i didnt like the show even from the previews
I agree, it's nothing like House. More "Mental" is trying to be "House" a-like (and it's even the same TV station).
btw i love House way more but RP is a good summer replacement
while the medical aspect of RP is kind of copying House (the tick thing) the two shows are totally different. RP is more of a comedy, while even though House has comedy it is more of comic releif. the latest episode was more House-esque but i still wouldn't say it is copying House. also you can't compare Hank to House, he is not even trying to be hostile and witty and no actor can compare to Hugh Laurie so why even bother. If somebody wants to complain about a show copying House talk about Mental, that show copys right down to the charactres. i do agree that though that in the four short epis, RP has kind of moved away from its origional idea (the two brothers and the relationship with the rich, especially that boy and his girlfriend) but i wouldn't compare it to House just yet. If anything it is Burn Notice mixed in with the Humor and constant pop culture references seen on Psych it just happens to be about a doctor not a detective.moreless
um, why is this under news and not (completely incorrect) opinion? the only correlation is that they are both medical doctors. that's where the similarities end.
He is so handsome! I love him!lol...By the way, has anyone ever heard of"***Richsingle.net*** " I was told by my friend that it is a millionaire romance site and it`s free to join? I am wondering if there are really so many verified millionaire guys and beauties?
I'm sorry, I thought I found this article under "News," not "Editorials."
I like Royal Pains a lot! I even make Dutch subtitles for amateur use. I never thought that it looked like House:S I don't see how you can think that this show is like House. It's a complete other show. So I suggest to watch the show again, so you see they are 2 totally diffrent shows.
I started watching House, after 3 episodes I got totally bored. I started watching Royal Pains, and I love it. In comparison, if you're going to compare House to Royal Pains, you can just go on and compare it to Greys Anatomy, ER, etc. The huge difference is the setting: Hank Lawson works in the Hamptons, not in a hospital. Gregory House does. Lawson isn't tied to a set of rules whereas House "is".
i totally don't get the comparison. i think royal pains id really fun, and definitely more like burn notice than house. house is awesome and so far i am really enjoying royal pains, hank and his brother have some pretty great banter "you look like an olympic swimmer from queeristan" lol.
O_o Wow. The only thing Royal Pains and House have in common is that they are medical dramas with varying degrees of comedy thrown in. Why not toss in Grey's, Private Practice, Scrubs, ER, Hawthorne, Nurse Jackie, and the new ones coming too: Trauma, Mercy and Three Rivers, just for good measure. Anyway, I'm enjoying Royal Pains so far.
Hmm. No.
It never entered my thought to link House to Royal Pains... It's laughable to even suggest it! The only link I see is that both feature gifted doctors, full stop, period! I love House and I'm enjoying Royal Pains so far, but please, no need to make up any odd theories...
House can't be compared to Royal Pains. Its two really different shows.
I totally disagree with this write up. Royal Pains is a great show and I don't think they are trying to be like house at all. "But Lawson could never achieve the angst, hostility and effortless genius that Hugh Laurie so effortlessly exudes"
Lawson is not trying to exude that as he is a nice guy who cares! I'm surprised anyone is making the comparison
When "House" first appeared, I tried it once and decided I didn't like it. I find "Royal Pains" easier to watch. I'm hoping the producers decide to use the supporting actors more so that the show doesn't become too one-sided. I like Mark Feuerstein, but variety is the spice of life.
I think the show is light and a lot of fun to watch; quite unlike House.I would like to see the writers make more use of Campbell Scott who plays Boris, he is an excellent actor. Give him larger and longer roles in a few episodes.I would also like to see Hank's fiance from the first episode return and make Hank's relationships more complicated. She also is a drop dead gorgeous woman and would add to the show's glamor and sex appeal.
at first i thought it was different but i agree that with each epi it moves more and more twords House. TV.com pointed this out but not the blatent rip off that is Mental. nurse jackie is also similar
I dont agree with that.. House is a pain in the butt and tries to push people to their edge and loves seeing peoples true reaction and thats sometimes sad. Hank loves medicine, he loves helping the person not the illness like House. Yeah they both deal with medicine but hes not a pill poping ass like house, it seems Nurse Jackie is more like House in my opinion
No comparison what so ever. House is a big drama and Royal Pains a very light comedy, both good in their own way.
royal pains is more like burn notice (but medical context) than it is like house. hank is actually a decent human being and is just as smart and perceptive! he's humble and actually cares for his patients (esp the ones he helps for free) seriously.. did the writer (anna hiatt) even watch the show? this is so misleading to those who havent watched it!! i think that those who like burn notice would love royal pains, and should give it a shot. this is seriously pissing me off...
i think mental is the one that wants to be house not much diffrent to me
This show is a fun, summer show without the seriousness of House.
I like the show and it really is not like House. House is a mean and surly addict who has a team of doctors and works in a hospital. Royal pains has a doctor that is just trying to make a living while keeping his morals so he helps the rich and powerful while still helping the poor in the hamptons along with his brother who is trying to find his own place and his PA. House has romance but barely has a healthy relationship but Hank has his brother and his new girlfriend. Other than being about doctors, and them being willing to go against the established order to help people, the two shows have very little in common. House is more like Sherlock Holmes and Royal Pains is more like Macguyver and Robin Hood.moreless
Love this show but I am still a fan of HOUSE
I don't get why they would even try to be House.
