Sanjaya easily advances on American Idol

Sanjaya Malakar, the talk of American Idol fan sites and blogs, advanced Wednesday to another round, as a bout with the flu forced crooner Tony Bennett to cancel a live performance on the hit show.

Rocker Gina Glocksen was sent packing from the group of nine finalists on the Fox television show, while Malakar, the 17-year-old whose finalist status has defied shaky performances and criticism from the judges, was easily voted through.

Malakar wasn't even among the bottom three vote-getters in this week's competition, in which contestants performed standards such as "Night and Day" and "Mack the Knife."

Bennett, 80, best known for his rendition of the ballad "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and a multiple Grammy award winner, appeared on Tuesday's show in pretaped segments coaching the nine singers who made it to this week's round of the talent contest.

"Even legends can come down with the flu," said host Ryan Seacrest, announcing Bennett's absence. "And that's just what Tony has done."

Standing in for Bennett as the featured guest singer on the show was the young, Canadian-born jazz vocalist Michael Buble, singing "Call Me Irresponsible."

The tally that sent Glocksen, from Naperville, Illinois, off American Idol was the highest of the show's sixth season, with just under 33 million votes cast, Seacrest said.

Glocksen, whose performance singing the Charlie Chaplin classic "Smile" scored the fewest votes, vowed "I'll be seeing you on tour" before singing the song one more time as the credits rolled.

Haley Scarnato and Phil Stacey joined Glocksen in the bottom three, but survived to sing another week on the country's No. 1 television show.

But it was Malakar's fate that drew the greatest speculation.

In recent weeks, he has moved a 13-year-old girl to tears on national television, inspired a one-woman hunger strike, smiled through vicious comments from Idol judges, been the butt of late-night comedians' jokes and delivered almost as many different hair-dos as off-key notes.

Acerbic judge Simon Cowell quipped last month that he would quit if Malakar won the competition. This week he said he was going to "try a different tactic," saying simply, "incredible" after Malakar's rendition of "Cheek to Cheek."

Some say Malakar is riding his charms through the competition, but other diehard fans insist that if he is not eliminated, and soon, the show will have lost its credibility.

Sanjaya should have been gone along time ago! He can't sing and he looks and acts like Michael Jackson. I've heard dogs howl better! When it came time for him to sing, I always turned the channel for my health! Simon is getting soft, I was waiting for him to make Sanjaya cry like a baby! He doesn't mind making the girls cry! I can't believe S made it this far. Remember when the little girl was crying and they let her come on stage at the end of the show to hug her favorites. I wish she had of walked up to Sanjaya and kicked him. Well, the people finally woke up and didn't vote for him! Yeah!!!! He's H I S T O R Y!!!

It will discredit the show 100%. This all started with Stern on Serius Sat Radio saying vote for this looser cause he couldnt stand the kid either. It will discredit the show yes and it has gotten ppl to stop watching just out of being fet up but sorry to say it i know from my experience within the tv industry this may cancel this show but another will pop up in its place. Your wasting your time, even if he wins... He gets a contract.. whos going to actually buy it? Not many, therefor hurting industry not tv. You can claim ur voting for him because you hate the show all you want, but your wrong its NOT on 2-3 times a year. It wouldnt actually fit in the lineup beings that show runs longer than a regular season. Check your facts before you run your mouth. Season 1 was something like 24 episodes so it ran long. Then 4 months or so later s2 aired but was a different year. Running for nearly 5 months. 7 months later s3 aired new year yet again. I figure you can see the pattern now. It does NOT run 2-3 times a year maybe 2 in some later season but a season that runs for 5 months theres no way there running 2 seasons in a year. To those who vote and dont actually watch the show... Hope ya feel proud of yourself cause your no better than the kid that actually is a horible singer by voting for him, whatever your reasons are.

What is there to be fed up with the show about? If you dont like it simply dont watch it, dont ruin it for those of us who actually wait each year to see new American stars pop up.

The entire point of what Mr. Stern and Vote for the worst is trying to do is get this show off the air. It has run it's course, time to move on. Unfortunately FOX in it's wisdom won't cancel the show, so we as people who are fed up with it are voting for Sajana so that people stop watching it, thus the show ends!!! I know a lot of people like it and IF it was on only once a year, it would be OK, but when it's on 2-3 times a year, it's way to much.

Seriouisly?! People are treating it as if this kid is "ruining" the music industry, when in fact I kind of believe this show is pretty much singlehandedly responsible for doing just that. The industry has always been about the product before but never so blantantly as this "wolf in sheep's clothing" called American Idol. Why don't they do what we really want them to do and just turn the first 4 weeks of bad auditions into the whole show so we can go home happy and we can leave the whole "making music" thing to the people that should be doing it, the musicians. NOT the producers.

Iknow for fact that Sanjaya is ruining a show that used to be credible for searching out new talent and giving them new opportunities for their future. Many of my friends and family members as well as myself as of last week have offically stopped watching American Idol. It is a shame because so many wonderful singers have came from this show. If the producers chose to continue this direction wrong-doers might have came along and destroyed a good show for so many possible real Idols in the future. You should be proud of yourselfs.

This whole season has been bad. There's not one really good singer in the group. And there have been groups voting for Sanjaya on purpose to keep him in. The general public is not voting for him, but the news said that groups like votetheworsein.com and a massive phone campaign from India has been voting for him, which is loading the vote. He's not cute. He's got bad hair, he can NOT sing worth a crap, and has absolutely NO talent. I know the producers don't care because they are having record number of viewers and record number of voters (because of the above vote loading). But if he were to win, the show will die because it will lose any credibility it ever had.

I honestly can't watch the show anymore. The only person I really even want to watch is Melinda and there are other ways of watching her performances. As long as Sanjaya's around, I suppose I'm on Idol Strike.

Well, I don't know if this article is complementing Sanjaya or not, but Sanjaya rocks, he has good voice control, good stage performance, sings well, dresses well for his performances, and just wants to make a point that I've gotten already. Who should have been out, Gina, Phil or Haley? I think Haley you guys?

Sanjaya is getting so many votes because national radio personalities (Howard Stern included) are getting their listening fans and bloggers to vote for him, in order to get Simon to leave the show, and to expose Idol as a joke. LOL. I even voted for him a couple times.

Gina should not have been sent home. Sanjoka is a joke, definitely can't sing, and Fred Astaire who was a dancer and not a singer sung that song a million times better than Sanjoka.

I really honestly hope that he wins, as American Idol has been an annoyance for far too many seasons. I want real shows, not boring "reality" tv, or these poorly conceived game shows that encourage mediocrity.

It's the judges fault!
They were stupid enough to put him in the top 24!

I certainly hope he doesn't win!

They will have to change rules if he wins.

Its not fare that idiots can vote as many times as they want. The producers should be unfair by just get rid of him even if fans of Howard Stern does. He isnt going to be popular in the music industry.
