The Stargate is closing for good...on television anyway. Sci Fi Channel today quietly revealed that Stargate Atlantis would not be renewing the show for a sixth season and that season five, currently airing, would be its last.
Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi also confirmed the end of the series in his blog, simply saying, "Yes it's true. I'm disappointed but not surprised." He is expected to discuss the matter further sometime today.
Stargate Atlantis is a spin-off of Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 years on both Showtime and Sci Fi beginning in 1997. Atlantis began airing in 2004, and will conclude with its 100th episode in January 2009.
Atlantis built on the successful science-fiction franchise created by the 1994 MGM film Stargate, and follows a crew of explorers who travel to a far off galaxy to learn about the lost city of Atlantis.
The show won't simply blink out of existence, however. Sci Fi's subtle announcement of the show's cancellation came in a press release revealing that a Stargate Atlantis movie is in the works. Following in the bootprints of fellow Sci Fi fare such as Battlestar Galactica and SG-1, the two-hour film will debut on Sci Fi Channel and be released on DVD shortly after. There's no word yet on what the movie will detail or when it will be released.

bottom line, I have watched all the Trek series thru into the SG-1 series and now the Atlantis series and I plain and simple do not want it to go. You have a super cast who play their parts as if it is their real lives and with all the human emotions included. I think someone should discover that the wraith are killed by water (salt if need be) and then more of the city can be discovered as they travel and find more ZPM's to power it. they could also discover new life forms who are genuinely nice and helpful for a change. I just know I don't want to be without the show. I love the cast and tell them they do a marvelous job as if it is their real lives. Thank you so much.moreless

This is sad. Here in Norway i can't watch the show on TV because its not airing. So i have to download the show to watch it. If not it may be airing on TV here as well BUT it is airing almost 1 year after the show actualy went on TV for the first time. So therfor i am downloading these shows! I just love this show i have been following this since the SG1 and it has been a wonderfull time. A show that is something special and not some garbage that comes out every year.But as a wise man said. All good things must come to an end....
It is sad to see this show go, while Atlantis was never as good as SG-1, for me at least (no Richard Dean Anderson), it is still a tragedy. I have all of the SG-1 seasons, Atlantis Seasons 1-4 (will get 5th when it comes out), and I think all of the movie to date. It is sad to see it go but not something I can't live without.
ive been a big fan of stargate own everything for dvd wise indeed it is a bad decision on canceling the show mainly they are'nt getting the ratings they want and theres a ton of people downloading shows online instead of watching it on tv im to the point im gonna give up on watching new shows cause most of them last 1 season if that then its canceled
Cancelling Stargate Atlantis was a BAD decision. Telkl me this wasn't done to make room for more bad reality shows and crap like ECW!
First StarGate SG-1and now Atlantis!!! They cann't do this to me. it is a great show and i have not heard anything about its ratings being bad. once again the networks are getting rid of the good shows and leaving the ones that suck!!! on the air!!!

As an Sci-Fi Fan from the scratch I grew up with Startrek, learned to love the 2,3,4 and 5th spin off of it - I started to watch SG1 pretty late. But thanks to the extraordenary actors and the growing professionall details of the show - I started loving it. Stargate Atlantis started as a spinoff and I hardly could imagine how the should evolve properly. But they did. David Hewlett, Paul McGillon and Joe Flanigan did make it and made the show an outstanding character. The actors that checked in later (Robert Piccardo, Amanda Tapping and even Jewel Staite)were the cream on top. Sure some good things must end. But 8 or more Seasons of Smallville and only 6 for SGA? There should be more ...
I have to mirror Joseph Malozzi's sentiments. Disappointed but not Surprised. the Sci Fi channel lost any respect I might have had for them when they cancelled SG-1. And I'm not even living in the USA. I vote that they make the new Stargate: Universe an internet show like Sanctuary and shun all big tv networks. Actually, when it comes down to it, I still don't understand why they can't move it to another network.
How do Sci-Fi expect me to live without my SGA!!!! Pleeeeeeeease don't cancel it! It's just the fifth season for god's sake! I promise I'll buy the DVDs!
This sucks. I did'nt care that much for SG 1, but i love Atlantis. I'm really gonna miss it.
This is a horrible disappointment. I was saddened to see the original SG1 leave the air, but have been happy with the developments of Atlantis. Sci-Fi is running out of shows that I watch on their station. I'm looking forward to checking out Sanctuary and Eureka is one that I love, but everything else has been canceled. Such a shame, but it does give me more time to read books and get out of the house.
WHAT? No! No that's just wrong! I love SGA! It's my favourite show! First SG1 and now SGA? Do they just want to cancel all good sci-fi shows or what? This is plain wrong. Simple as that. What the heck are sci-fi thinking??

It's an attrocity, and it sounds like theres alot of unhappy people out there incl myself SG-1 had a good run of 10 seasons they should do the same for Atlantis, at the very least, maybe SOMONE from Sci-fi channel reads these comments and will come to their senses, fat chance, but I'll keep dreaming.
I take back the Bravo II comment, but the Saturday movies reeeeaaalllly do suck quite often.

What a shame, I liked SGA a lot more than SG1 altyhough it's unfortunate that they didn't transfer Lexa Doig over to Atlantis "She's One Hot Babe". But as I understand it, it's not the end of the Stargate Phenomenon, aren't the producers replacing SGA with Stargate Universe? Seems to me that it'll be a lot more diversified, what with traveling to more than just two Galaxies, I hope that they'll have the decency of carrying over some of the cast from both SG1 & SGA.

Not suprised! Is it just me or is The SciFi Channel becoming more the Horror Channel? I understand to a point that horror flicks have the fiction part, but the science part is a little weak, and that it seems (to me) that everytime there is a holiday weekend, we receive the horror marathons. I might be just too much of a space geek to understand, but feel we need more shows like: Stargate, Babylon 5, Space 1999, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galatica, Farscape, Star Trek, Star Wars, Transformers etc...

Everytime you get hooked on a TV series they decide to end it.
It's sad to see this show end, although there are better shows i admit, but nevertheless, this was a good show and i wish it would not end soon. I just hope it leaves us with a good ending.
I can not believe it. First Stargate-SG1 and now Stargate Atlantis. They say they are bringing Stargate back,all new people,all new story line.So how is it they are bringing back Stargate? They need to change the name,it is NOT Stargate anything.. I wish them luck. I will not be watching it....
this is stupid a mistake. they could have hold off stargate universe for a few more years as there were still plenty of life left in SGA. There's still many stories to be told and more character development. I've personally always felt this series could go on for at least a few more seasons, 3-4 at most.
How could they, SGA could go on forever. Sci-Fi channel only have two decent shows SGA and Eureka, after that what? You bet I will sign the petition.

Stargate Universe has apparently been given the green light. It seems as though they are 'replacing' Atlantis for Universe, when they should have allowed Atlantis to finish off on ten seasons, and then work on Universe.

I just cannot believe this. Atlantis is being cancelled. Iam a huge fan of both SG1 & SGA and dont watch it on tv because I live in Fiji so I watch the sereies on DVDs. I agree that Atlantis should have had at least a few more seasons, hope the sci-fi guys reconsider.

this is so annoying first they cancel sg1 now atlantis and why because its the top show on their network no.. but because some rich people think that by making the show more appealing to viewers who love a bit of sex and love making that they will make even more money. apparantly they want to make stargate universe just like battlestar galactica... and where did that end up low raitings and no awards leading to it finishing with only 4 seasons......what the hell is going on.....we must do something!!!!!
I am sorry to see Stargate Atlantis go. Could this perhaps make room for adding Jericho to the lineup. It could not cost more to produce, and it an incredibily good show with a huge following. Think about it Sci-Fi

stargate atlantis has been struggling latly with its story and full season plot line and theams in one of the recent episodes fran the replicator that was made on atlantis returned and said that she and othe acended replicators had been in other advanced race tech why cant one of thease other races be the big bad in a sixth season in dadalus variations thay encountered a race that was attacing atlantis why not have then in it it left it open for them to come into the show
stargate univers will kill off stargate i have no doubt about that stargate should be on a planet insted of a ship why not a world ship were the other chevrons could come into play
