Show 101: Supernatural

Sam, Dean, meet your new super-obsessed fans.

SHOW: Supernatural

NOW SHOWING: Season Five premieres Thursday, September 10 at 9pm

AIRS: Thursdays at 9pm EST, CW

WHY YOU MIGHT LOVE IT:

Hot guys hunting demons for the girls. Spooks, gore, and guts for the guys. Fantastic writing for everyone.

WHY YOU MIGHT HATE IT:

If camp isn't your thing, Supernatural may be a little goofy for you.

THE PREMISE:

The common misconception about Supernatural is that it's a show for teenage girls. For the last time: It's not! Instead, it's one of the most entertaining 44 minutes currently on television. Sam and Dean Winchester are brothers who are in the family business -- which happens to be hunting down demons (and other paranormal spooks). The show functions both as a serialized drama and an anthology series, including standalone episodes and mythos-building hours throughout its run. One episode might be about the brothers hunting down rogue ghosts, while another may see them battling towards a larger goal. In this case, the larger goal happens to be stopping Satan, who was accidentally unleashed on Earth at the end of Season Four. Season Four also introduced us to angels, soldiers for God who aren't exactly as cherubic as we thought they were. Season Five is gearing up to be the biggest of them all: It's all about Sam and Dean vs. The Apocalypse.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

For rookie Supernatural viewers, the focus will immediately be on the frights, but the show's heart has always been (and always will be) the relationship between the two brothers. Sam, the younger of the two, has always taken a more cautious approach to the siblings' missions -- but has showed signs of recklessness as he's gained demon-stopping special powers (he may or may not be Second Coming, or something close to it), which are strengthened by sipping on demon blood. Dean, the "tough guy" of the pair, was recently released from Hell, where he participated in unspeakable torture practices. Season Four spent much of its time splitting the brothers apart, but series creator Eric Kripke says Season Five will be about bringing them back together. Well, that and stopping Satan from crushing humans underneath his cloven hooves. But don't expect Satan to be some gruesome, maniacal beast; in a true Supernatural twist, he's being written as a polite gentleman and the most likable person in the room (and he's played by the same dude who plays Jacob in Lost!). If snappy dialogue, dark humor, and some gore are your thing, definitely watch Supernatural. We Supe-Nazis could use you.

I wish that everyone would watch Supernatural at least once and try it! I've had plenty of friends just watch one episode and now wanna watch the entire series! A lot have people have only seen one episode and they think it's stupid: maybe you just didn't watch that great of an episode: just give it another chance! I wish people would see the amazing writing and acting in this show. Supernatural is the best show ever

I really wish more people would give supernatural a chance! The writing, acting, and pretty much everything about it is uber amazing! It definitely deserves more recongnition than it gets now. Also, this show is definitely not only restricted to teenage girls, although i am one. I don't however, watch the show to see "two hot guys" riding around in an impala! I watch it because of its amazing plot and storyline, as I mentioned before. Trust me though, the diverse audience is part of what makes us supernatural fans so incredibly amazing! :D

Wow, IsmeldaLasombra, resorting to name-calling? I'm pretty sure I'm not an adolescent and I adore this show. The things that draw me the most to this show is the story telling and ultimately the story of the brothers. I'm really surprised you find it boring. I was hooked from the pilot. I was a Heroes fan, but it has been a letdown for me last season, and I'm sadly not looking forward for s4. I'm really disappointed. I would encourage you to try Supernatural again. Also, abbyrose, I love your avatar. That had to be one of the best scenes ever. I ROFL'ed like crazy when I saw it.

It's definitely the best show on The CW. No question.

Adolescent? me who's over 40? hehe... I've seen a lot of SCI-FI shows and movies in my 'young' life... Supernatural is a profound show - well written and great performed. Maybe it's not plain enough for the usual SFX oriented SF-viewer? The show might demand more from it's viewers. Thinking in metaphors reading between the lines or taking a deeper look... In comparison with other shows of its genre it has to fight with a very tight budget. But what it delivers in 40 min week after week, now in its 5th season, is just amazing. IMO Supernatural is currently the best show on TV. And BTW most of the fans I know are not adolescents, most of them are at my age... educated SCI-FIC veterans ;-) *lol* Supernatural isn't just a simple horror-show with sexy actors, as you might think because it's shown on the CW, it's an intelligent genre-show which is interpreting classic, religious and modern mythology and urban legends and lore - IMO, psychologically sophisticated, and it's also entertaining. As an horror-show it got what it takes - suspense, gore and a good dramaturgy - and like Star Trek, Star Wars or The X-Files it presents unique characters with cult-potential... OK, what was it, that I wanted to say? uhmmm... Supernatural - best show on TV!!! ;-)moreless

in Response to IsmeldaLasombra : I'm going to take a WILD guess by your icon/avatar that you're a "Heros" fan.. which is unfortunate, because not only do the writers of that show faithfully write themselves into a wall EVERY season.. their plot lines are horrible and the show is completely lackluster in performance.. aka it SUCKS :) If you don't like "campy" tv shows then Supernatural may not be the show for you, but I speak for all SPN freaks when I say that it's the BEST show on television... FYI Everyone I've conned into watching this show has become addicted. Including my parents.. plus I'm 25 which I hardly consider the age of a teenager. ( Kripke > Joss Whedon :)

I really don't understand what you guys see in that show. It is oh so boring. Sorry to add a little note of dissonance in all your glorification but the story has no point, the gore/spook is just not gory or spooky enough to be worth it and the writing... come on there are far better fantastic/sci-fi shows than this. But hey, I'm not an adolescent anymore so I guess that"s why I don'"t see the point in this show.

For all the show's shortcomings, I always liked Reaper's portrayal of the devil: arrogant, manipulative, in a sharp-as-hell suit.

Still don't understand why people think it's a show for teenage girls?

    Sep 10, 2009
  • jaynashvil

Teenage girls wouldn't understand the series. It's way to smart and is dealing with some serious, heavy (heaviest?) problems right now. Call your Dad and tell him to watch, not your little Sis.

I like that Satan is a nice gentleman, anything but the usual stereotype of evil is a good change for me. And by the way, i'm a girl, and i don't even watch Supernatural for the male leads. The writing is good enough to garner fans.

It is not a show for teenage girls! I hate how everyone says that. I can't wait for the premeire!

Even though there's a lot of old footage shown in the Season 5 trailer, I really like the song and the color correction in it. Love Supernatural.

supernatural is the best show I've ever seen, and no it isn't stupid for the devil to be all nice and likable, just reading you say that makes me think you haven't seen many Lucifer portrayals which all the good ones make him out to be all nice and likable because obviously that's the smart way to approach humanity, instead of going all, "I'm gonna kill you and I'm a terrific monster" kinda way, now that would be stupid

    Sep 10, 2009
  • Russmasta887

does anyone else think that its stupid that Lucifer is actually nice and likable instead of being evil and scary

I'm 21, and have watched every episode since the beginning. Got my parents hooked on the show as well last season, it only took watching the season 4 premiere to realize I was telling the truth when I said it was the best show on television! Going to be watching the season 5 premiere tonight with them tonight too. Satan, the apocalypse..ahhh family time. lol

It's not only for teenage girls. It's a great show. But the fan girls are so annoying that it gives the impression that the only reason to watch it is the 2 hot guys.

I'm a 26 year old male and I love the show. I've always thought of it as a male oriented show along the lines of Buffy or Angel and it surprises that some people think of it as a female oriented show.

I wouldn't watch the first season of supernatural because it was advertised with this catch phrase, "Hot Guys, Hot Show". It wasn't until I unwillingly caught an episode, the first shape shifter one, that I realized the show was more than a Ghost Whisperer with men. It’s gory has some great storytelling and it has an awesome selection of classic rock to fill in the background of Sam and Dean’s perpetual road trip.

I've been a hardcore fan since season 1 and season 4 was just so utterly awesome - Castiel rocks! - and as said above, the show's draw is the relationship between Dean and Sam, the good and the bad times that pull them together and push them apart. Throw in the fantastic acting skills of both Jared and Jensen - not to mention the stellar supporting cast - and Supernatural has always been one of the best shows ever filmed, and certainly my favourite series ever.

What the hell is up with "the video you have requested is not available for your geographic region" That is a load of crap. Get rid of it.

I marathoned the first four seasons of this while I was away on holiday and it was one of the best things I've ever done. The show's got under my skin in the way only Chuck and the Jossverse have ever done before.Speaking as a newbie fan, I cannot recommend picking this up enough. It's absolutely fantastic. Seeing a show based around siblings, around a family rather than an "on-off will they-won't they-they" obviously will couple is so refreshing. Seriously, give this one a shot if you haven't already. You will not regret it. I certainly don't (even if my bank balance might).
