Showtime Renews Californication, Shameless, and House of Lies

Showtime did some housekeeping today and realized that it hadn't yet renewed its Sunday lineup of Shameless, House of Lies, and Californication, so it got right on that. All three of the shows will be back in 2014, presumably in the nice block they've settled into on Sunday nights.

All three shows are up, ratings-wise, over their previous seasons, says Showtime. Season 3 of Shameless is up 22 percent, the second season of House of Lies is up 10 percent, and the sixth season of Californication is up 21 percent. It can't hurt that Showtime has recently attracted a lot of buzz (and probably subscribers) from the success of Homeland and the steady performance of Dexter.

I can't say I watch any of these shows after they failed to woo me early on and seemed to stay the same with the occasional odd check-in. Of the three, Shameless probably ranks the highest and House of Lies ranks the lowest. Which show is your favorite of the three?

Shameless is so good I was worried it would have been cancelled already. Nice to see it will be around for at least another season. Fiona is a goddess.

I didn't think I'd like Shameless but ended up loving it, one of the few American versions of a British show that didn't suck. I watch House of Lies, but I wouldn't care if it didn't get renewed, it's not that good really.. It'll be ok then it'll be annoying.. I pretty much only watch it for Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz, but mainly Kristen Bell. like 98% Kristen Bell to 2% Ben Schwartz.

House of Lies is my favorite, but I enjoy Shameless, even if Frank is the Gilligan that needs to be killed and buried. Californication started out great, but quickly became painful to watch, so I stopped.

Shameless, but isn't a big honor since I don't watch House of Lies and I've come to hate Californication after his awesome first season, that promises a lot, but then went downhill after that.

Shameless and House of Lies are both horrible. Just do as many shocking things as possible to hide the lack of good characters or stories...

Californication's first season was probably one of the best things ever on tv. It was so good and i have really no idea what happened to it since then. It has been a steady decline from watchable (seasons 2,3) to gross and wtf is happening (everything after season 3)? I really like Shameless, it definitely is one of the better shows out there, although i found it unfortunate that Karen went from slightly nuts to full blown crazy and Jimmys Druglord story is somewhat ridiculous. I watched the first episode of House of Lies but couldn't get into it. Not even Jean-Ralphio and Kristen Bell could win me over.

It used to be Californication but now it's Shameless. I assumed that the US remake of Shameless would be awful, especially considering the first 3 to 4 seasons of the UK version were brilliant, but I have to say that the US version is even better and a lot of the praise should go to Emmy Rossum. Californication is great, completely detached from reality, but still fun to watch. I don't mind House of Lies, but then I'll watch anything with Kristen Bell in it. With Homeland and Dexter and not forgetting The Borgias, Nurse Jackie, Episodes, The Big C and Masters of Sex and Ray Donovan on the way Showtime has really some fantastic programs.

House of Lies didn't do it for me and I lost track of Californication somewhere.

But I actually just caught up on Shameless during the winter break just like Cory recommended. And I have to agree: It's probably THE most underrated show I've ever known! It has such a great and compatible cast, and though it isn't REALLY changing things up, I just never get tired of watching it!
Maybe that's because - instead of telling one joke after another like a lot of other comedies (mostly network) - it actually has a great STORY to tell. The story of life. With all it's up's and down's. From the funniest and most hilarious moments to the deeply sad and unforgiving ones.
And after every episode I feel like I know more about life and that it so great that I get to learn it through these lovely characters. And while that probably isn't so: If a show can make me feel that way, it IS REALLY GOOD.

I like both House of Lies and Californication - they're fresh and snappy but as they are now, they lack story...I want a plot.

House of Lies has been nowhere near as funny as it started out in season 1. The time-freeze monologues were mostly what got me into it, but they pretty much never happen anywhere after the first 6 episodes. Its like they took out 90% of the comedy and tried to fill it with angst and drama. Shameless wins without any real competition.

Great! But despite the fact that I'm happy to see them all be renewed, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be time for Californication to come to an end soon. How many seasons can Hank fuck up his life before he understands to make a change?

Hopefully much more - and all those around him too - and with as much dramatic flair as possible please! As soon as the writers decide Hank can't go any lower and decide for a character change, that's probably when I'll agree that Californication can drift away and just be a blissful, depraved memory ;-)

I was never able to get into Shameless. I think I saw most of its first season... it didn't do anything for me.

I watch Californication and House of Lies, but neither would crack my top 30 shows. Californication is too moody (giggles) and House of Lies is neither dramatic or comedic enough to be one or the other.

"Shameless" is easily the best of the three. Emmy Rossum deserves accolades for her performance. Uneasily anticipating what Jimmy's lies are going to do to Fiona. Its nice to see a show about people I recognize rather than people who live and dress like kings but don't work as with most comedies.

"Californication" is past its prime and only resembles what it once was. Wouldn't have been surprised to see it get the axe. Too much Evan Handler ruins the show. This season they aren't even trying to do a new story - they are doing the same story with minor changes that they did with Kallum Keith Rennie's 'Lew Ashby' in Season 2. (Nice that they at least mentioned Lew in the most recent episode.)

"House of Lies" is just too stupid. Want to like it, tried to - can't believe Don Cheadle won an award for this mess. I'm sorry, Consulting just doesn't make for a good work place comedy.

First season of Californication was great television, writing, etc. They should have left it at that.

House of Lies has its moments but it pretty much repeats the same format each episode.

Shameless wins hands down. Humor, drama, humor in the middle of drama, crazy antics, top notch acting talent, and it has diverged from the British version into its own thing, and in my opinion it is doing it better.

Shameless is great and of the three easily my favorite. I think Emmy Rossum should have been nominated for awards for her fenominal performance.

Californication seems to be back in shape, hated last season and the first episode of this season which just didn't work, but the last two episodes Hank is back.

House of Lies I can't really put my finger on it, but it just works and is very enjoyable to watch.

All in all great news all shows are renewed.

Season 2 of house of lies is even better - so glad it is coming back - Bell and Cheadle's characters (and acting) alone deserve it

True. Executive producer Matthew Carnahan said in an interview after the first season that his team listened to the criticism and recognized that the first season was filled with too much; a new case every week and all the relationship issues. So for the second season they decided to slow down the pace so that there would be more time to focus on the characters. And in my mind that has made this season better. The pace has been less chaotic.

So *that's* what happened. I liked the old pace, and I was starting to call this season "The Vegas Season" because I felt they should've been done with these assholes by now.

It doesn't seem like anyone's developing faster at this micro level; if anything, with them stuck at Vegas, Marty isn't with his son, dad, or his ex, and the team's spending too much time with the same douchebags now, where before, guys like them used to rinse away after a closed deal.

But if it's working for ratings, I can go with it. When shows go with what *I* want...shows go away.

I watch all three shows, and Shameless is the best. Followed by Californication and then House of Lies. They're all great in they're own light, but Tim you should really, really catch up on Shameless. Such a great series.

agreed ... the last season was bad ... Runkle's fault
Reply

Runkle isn't at fault at all. It's the writers who continue to think it's great fun to put him in the most ridiculous situations, thereby ruining his awesome character. Which, by the way, continues into this season, unfortunately. I mean, c'mon, can't you think of a better storyline than making Charlie pretend-gay? Give the guy a break.
