South Park Will Make It to Season 20

Here's something to smile about: Comedy Central has reached a deal with Trey Parker and Matt Stone to produce at least three more seasons of South Park, which will bring the series to Season 20. The two will continue to write, direct and edit all of the episodes, saying in a statement: "Comedy Central has been our home for 15 years and we love working there. South Park is a blast and we can't wait to make more."

This actually puts South Park within spitting distance of The Simpsons, currently in its twenty-third season and holder of the title of longest-running TV comedy in history. After a very public negotiations dispute with the cast, The Simpsons was extended for another two seasons, guaranteeing it 25 years on the air.

Here are some questions:

1) South Park vs. The Simpsons: Which is holding up better in its old age?

2) Which show do you think will ultimately have the longer run?

3) Bart vs. Cartman in a battle to the death: Who wins? ("All of us" is an acceptable response.)

    1. South Park. It stays current and fresh.
    2. The Simpsons
    3. cartman hands down. No doubt. Stewie used to be like Cartman but Seth ruined him. so now it's Cartman

  • hpfan06

    1. South Park - South Park is genius because it always is able to effectively rip on current events.

    2. South Park - As mentioned in #1, the current events nature of South Park will ensure that the show always remains fresh.

    3. Cartman (by a mile!) - Cartman killed a kid's parents, cooked them in chili, and then fed them to the kid, so I think the choice is pretty obvious (watch the episode "Scott Tenorman Must Die" from Season 5 if you don't believe how evil Cartman really is).

Here's to at least 20 seasons and hopefully another 20, At 6 days an episode and 14 a season that's only 84 days AND 20 MORE SEASONS only 4.60 years. South park is so much more hip to today. They only take 6 days to make the episode so it can incorporate nearly instant news. Unlike those other animated shows (Not knocking any of the except the Cleveland show and Allen Gregory, both P.O.S.) Hopefully south park can run on forever, but will for sure out pace the Simpsons, but at 14 episodes a season, the total will take a long while to eclipse the Simpsons. If Cartmen can kill people in an episode out of spite, what chance does Bart really have? He's done especially if Cartmen ever gets his hands on some DIP (we'll see who can catch that reference without having to Google it.)moreless

Yay, best show on TV hands down!

    1. Can't decide which, Both series may end up ending their original runes when their current orders expire.
    2. The Simpsons, since I doubt South Park will run longer than 20 seasons.
    3. Cartman.

  • aknu

    1: SP
    2: Simpsons
    3: Cartman

  • Zypherix

    1. Definatly Simpsons, South Park went beyond awful year ago, Simpsons.. well... still present the decent ep every once in a while.
    2. the Simpsons
    3. No idea

  • Albatrossity

    1. South Park is to the Simpsons what Calvin and Hobbes is to Garfield. The Simpsons flatlined a decade ago, SP is still brimming with brilliance.
    2. No clue but hopefully South Park.
    3. Cartman fed a kid his parents, Bart cut off a statue's head. (SP Cartoon Wars Prt.II)
The Simpsons is SP on training wheels.

  • headclub

    1) The Simpsons is the LOTR of it's genre (2 points if you got that), yet I still watch South Park religiously--cuz it's way better now.

    2) The Simpsons, these days....kinda meh. and that's being kind. but it seems like the show will run FOREVER...

    3) Cartman in a tko. They faced in 'Cartoon Wars' and the big boned racist made Bart look like a boy scout. but South Park did give their predecessor credit by devoting an entire episode to them--'The Simpsons Already Did It.'

  • Waderf

South Park rules. Can't be compared with Simpsons. Both shows are good in their way.

    TWENTY SEASONS, F**K YEAH !!!

  • klotensen

I watched every episode of both shows ...
both are great, but I couldnt look myself in the mirror and say "Southpark is better than the Simpsons". Trey and Matt are dumbwits and they think they are genius - often thats a great combination for really funny stuff - but how often they swinged and missed completly, so much it destroyed all the fun. And dont get me on the dull movie adaptions, almost every single episode nowadays is a movie rip-off. The Simpsons, like the author said, were in their golgen age SO FUCKING BRILLIANT and MASTERFULL, it almost hurt but never did. Also I dislike even the good episodes of southpark seeing them multiple times - that never happened to me with the good Simpsons episodes.

  • Raccoon1459

    My answers.

    1. South Park
    2. The Simpsons. I think it will always be the longer show.
    3. Cartman

  • theweakerthans

491 episodes to 223, that's not spitting distance. I just hope they both stay funny at least. Matt and Trey said they were going to keep making them weirder until no one is watching. I hope that's true, I'm sure it'll be entertaining.

  • cutieflutie1216

Really? Who would win in a battle to the DEATH? Bart would never kill anyone. Cartman is a sociopath. That's not even a contest....

Oh yes it is. Cartman is just good with a weapon or if someone else is doing the dirty job(Scott Tennerman-farmer did the work). He even got beaten up BY A GIRL(he was so scared of the fight he ate his shorts) !
Bart on the other hand is used to physical abuse(Homer and the bullys), is way more in shape and on good terms with Satan. All Bart needs is reason - Ithink a fight to the death is reason enough.

  • MsBoonzie

Simpsons will always be better. Always.

  • Soundchekz

    1. South Park. Hands down. The Simpson may have had 6 awesome seasons, but South Park has had 15 consistently good seasons.
    2. Simpsons. Fox will bleed the Simpsons dry, then put more blood in them and bleed them dry again.
    3. Cartman. See "Scott Tenorman Must Die" for more details!

  • myaddow

South Park, to me, hasn't been funny in a very VERY long time. I stopped watching South Park after the movie. It should have ended with that.

  • kutupla

i stopped watching South park 1 season after they cut Chef out of the show. It stopped being the same funny show it was...

  • Arch_Angel88

    1. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, compares to The Simpsons in its glory years in terms of television animation. Seasons 4-10 will forever be the golden standard. (Do you guys sense a but coming along?) But, South Park has remained consistently funny and topically relevant throughout its entire tenure on the air (unlike The Simpsons). So I gotta go with South Park.

    2. The Simpsons. Because I just can't see Matt and Trey going (at least) 25 seasons.

    3. Besides "All of us", Cartman wins without a doubt. All Bart can really be charged with is vandalism, albeit, often in a grandiose fashion. Whereas, Cartman is pure evil. He would give the children of the corn a run for their money. Bart wouldn't stand a chance.

  • pretty_sure

    1.) South Park
    2.) The Simpsons
3.) Cartmen. He will Kill Homer and Marge and feed them to an unknowing Bart!

  • rye06p

The Simpsons and South Park are by no means similar in any way apart from being animated. It's like comparing Sons of Anarchy with 30 Rock... (Maybe not)

  • NathanRoth

south park will be on its 20th season while Simpsons be on its will be on it 28 and yeah i'm sure they say Simpson got renewed for a two year contract but they will continue after the two years are up and get renewed for another contract.

  • underdog_x

    1- South Park, definetly
    2- Simpsons, has a bigger fan-base
    3- All of us :)

  • hockeyrick

    SP is consistently more relevant!

  • FilmFanatic

no offense but south park has 15 seasons so far + 3 more seasons = to 18 and not 20 and secondly the show premiered in 1997 and The Simpsons premiered in 1989 hence they're not in spitting distance. This is my personal opinion but let the awards speak for themselves: The simpsons were nominated for 74 primetime emmy awards won 26, southpark nominated for 12, won 4. Also, south park is really clever and all, but simpsons is more original in it's plot. I really like south park but there is no comparison between the two.

I absolutely agree with this, I wouldn't say 10 years of show starting is spitting distance. Can't possibly compare South Park to Simpsons anyway lol.

    • zeddyp

LOL yes cause the EMMY'S are a GREAT way to gauge how good a TV show is...thats like saying a movies better cause it won more Oscars....by your point of view... Titanic is just as good as Ben-Hurr and LOTR Return of the King...and also far greater then any movie to date....(unless your a 13 year old girl who just got unfrozen from the year...1997..98? (whenever the hell it was) then you obviously dont feel that way)

Simpson's seasons 3-8 Are some of THEE greatest hours of TV I can ever claim to have watched...but fact of the matter is South Park > All

I would trade every episode of Simpson's ever made.. for 10 of my favorite episodes of South Park

    • brak

They renewed the show for 17 seasons, then they renewed it again for 20 seasons, as you read above

  • Zuhoffen

    1. South Park
    2. South Park unless Matt and Trey no longer won't to do the show.
    3. Cartman

  • DashWeed

South Park has held up better than the simpsons for a really long time and seriously will never get old. IT will always be current. The only way it falls off is if Matt and Trey give up the reigns to someone else.
South Park will have a longer run as long as it stays a Matt and Trey Production
And this is a dumb question because obvioulsy Cartman is evil and doesn't really have much against killing ppl

  • listenshh

South Park cos it gets better with age, simpsons should have quit at season 10
South Park because of its' addressing of current affairs
    And Cartman... obviously

  • LiveLife93

This news has made my day! :D
    And in answer to the questions;
    1) South Park (without a doubt)
    2) The Simpsons (rather it was South Park to be honest...)
    3) Cartman (No contest! Cartman is a manipulative, evil child who once made Scott Tenermon's parents into chillie for him to eat unknowingly!)

  • adamonfire

Great news, especially considering I'm sure neither has to work another day if they so choose.

  • FringeNetwork

I am SO happy! South Park is the best comics EVER!
That's all I have so say!

  • bonezrulz05

. No doubtSouth Park, South Park and Cartman

  • mksystem74

Glad Comedy Central is backing the show for so long, but its wrong to compare them to The Simpsons. First, Simpsons is on network tv, so even if South Park gets close or passes how many years on tv, South Park will never match episodes produced. So Simpsons already won "longest running". South Park goes off of current events so it seems more current, but Simpsons has ages just as well with original episodes. And last, Bart doesn't have a chance against Cartman, no one does.

  • jocey11

Cartman beats Bart, its obvious, no reason for a battle =]

  • pabloibarra_316

    1) South Park
    2) The Simpsons
    3) Cartman

  • Dudekotka

You didn't even mention that was already guaranteed to go for two more seasons before this three season order. I actually don't like the idea of South Park going on for that long, the first half of season 15 was spotty at best, and season 14 was all mediocre, and I really doubt it can keep the quality it's been holding for the last 7 episode for 71 more episodes. (Assuming each season gets 14 episodes)

    1. South Park, The Simpsons hasn't been good for ages, even if I did love the movie.
    2. The Simpsons, I can imagine them going my entire life, even if Fox would eventually have to get new cast members.
    3. Cartman, easily, I truly can't imagine Bart going for the kill, while I have no problem what so ever imagining Cartman killing Bart.moreless

first half of season 15 sucked cause they were really busy with "The Book of Mormon" just like when episodes were shotty when they were doing the south park movie AND basketball while they had to write the episodes still....these guys are funny they arent supermen cut them some slack

    • MartinMark1
