Spartacus: Vengeance S01E04: "Empty Hands"
At the end of last week's episode, the gladiators had been split up. Crixus and a few others were captured by Ashur and his men in the mines, while Spartacus and the rest, accompanied by Mira and the rescued Naevia, escaped. At the start of this week's "Empty Hands," they were hiding in the woods, but Naevia, suffering some serious PTSD, freaked out and gave them all away. A battle ensued, Mira saved Naevia's life, and one rebel was lost. With more Romans on the way, they left the body there, where Ashur and Marcus found it, and strung it up as a warning.
In Capua, Glaber and Virinius faced off over the absence of Glaber's soldiers at the games; he'd dispatched them to chase down Spartacus. Illythia showed up, and offered to throw him a proper celebration. Glaber put on a friendly face, but later angrily confronted Illythia for betraying his loyalty to the creepy Roman Praetor who had his hands all over her baby bump. Illythia instructed her slaves to see that Virinius's needs were always met, when she ran into Lucretia and Sepia. Seppia was giggling like a school girl, announcing she'd chosen Virinius as a husband. Illythia could barely conceal her disappointment—she wanted him to toss her Ceasar salad—and told Lucretia, "Virinius is a Praetor. The wife of such a man must possess refinement and poise, traits yet lacking in a spoiled little girl." When Lucretia responded that perhaps Illythia wanted him for herself, Illythia said, "The morning cock has better chance of crowing to such heights." Well, if anyone would know the odds on morning cocks, it's Illythia.
At the ludus, Glaber received a special delivery: a bloodied, swollen-eyed Crixus and three other gladiators. As much as it delighted him, he was disappointed to see no Spartacus among them. Illythia gloated in Lucretia's face, as once again her prophesies had failed to materialize. Illythia placed a hand on her scarred womb, and let her know she was fully on to Lucretia's little act. She knew that Lucretia knew that she knew that Lucretia knew, or something like that.
In the jail, Oenomaus told Crixus that he "falls to ruin for love... She is woman, a delicate creature at the best of times." I mean, of course he was going to say that, having learned recently from Ashur that Gannicus was giving his own wife the ol' gladiator in-and-out behind his back.
Elsewhere, at yet another ambush in the woods, another battle—Nasir was stabbed. It looked really bad! Like, Nasir shouldn't be alive at all, but Spartacus soldered him back together. Meanwhile, a guy had his aortic artery severed on top of Naevia, who barely looked like she was holding it together.
Later, at Verinius's party, a human centerpiece had slow-motion sex for the revelers. I didn't think you could find those outside of Las Vegas! Glaber trotted out the gladiators and offered them up to Verinius as gift sacrifices. Verinius chose instead to have them fight to the death in the arena, but one was set aside as a party favor. Lucretia chose one gladiator for a human pinata party, and while she lingered over Crixus, she spared him, and chose the equivalent of a gladiator redshirt. Seppius had the honor of slicing off his tongue, and everyone else took a turn at stripping off his flesh. Just lovely! Meanwhile, noting that Seppia favored him, Illythia's father pushed her toward Verinius, whom he considers to be in possession of better Praetorly qualities. Never mind that she's supposedly pregnant with Glaber's child! Glaber's a ninny who can't kill a simple Spartacus when he's asked to. Seppia was offered the honor of delivering the fatal stabbing, but when the gladiator looked into her eyes, she couldn't go through with it. But Illythia could! She viciously stabbed him to death, and even the hardened party attendees found it rather startling. Yes, even in ancient Rome, Illythia stood out as a sociopath. (By the way, anyone know where you can buy one of those bone thongs?)
Big Man on Campus, a.k.a. Verinius, was cornered by Illythia, who gave her a little Don Draper Special, if you catch my drift, and she seemed perfectly happy to oblige. It was filthy and I truly hope you sent the kids to bed before watching it. (Unless this was the week you wanted to teach them about manual stimulation, in which case it was a great conversation-starter.) They discussed having her father annul her marriage, and Illythia, delighted, winked at her husband on her way to earn daddy's blessing. But oops! There was Lucretia, riding him like an Arabian steed. Lucretia! Come on, you may have a nasty scar, but you're still really hot. Date in your league! Of course Illythia thought this was more than pure old-man lust; no, she thought Lucretia was doing it to undermine her power, moving into the stepmother position. She attacked Lucretia, but Lucretia said she only slept with Illythia's father to earn her his blessing to dissolve her marriage to Glaber. The scene, the creepiest this season, ended in a kiss between the two women.
In the woods, the Romans were still hunting down Spartacus, and in a final ambush, a loyal warrior was killed by Ashur. Mira took a punch to the face by Marcus, and Spartacus reacted by spearing him right in the abdomen. Ashur threw him on his back and carried the big lug off, warning him to keep quiet should Spartacus find them. But Marcus, loyal soldier that he is, screamed that he would fight until "the last drop of Roman blood" is spilt in his pursuit of Spartacus—leading Ashur to do him in. "I'm not Roman," he said. RIP Marcus. You were supernaturally hot.
The episode ended as yet more footsteps closed in at dawn—but the survivors were relieved to see it was Agron and the rest of men, back to fight alongside their leader.
QUESTIONS:
1. Where are things headed with Illythia and Verinius?
2. I have to admit that Spartacus is getting overshadowed by some of the other characters, particularly Crixus, who seems to be the true lead this season. Thoughts?
3. A liberation of Crixus and friends from Glaber's prison is imminent. Which side will Oenamaus choose?

This was an awesome episode and I loved seeing Illythia manipulating everyone around her!
I don't think he is being overshadowed, but he is just coming into having his presence felt through the screen!
Oenamaus will fight with his brothers I would think!
the torture scene although was nothing compared to what it was really like and far from the tortures the church brought down on people for far less or nothing during its centuries long inquisition bothered me....i don't even think it was gratuitous but rather for me powerful esp in the context shown within the party going on...if i am getting queasy i can not say that is a bad thing, but it makes sense that this rather than a fight in the arena no matter how bloody is far harder to stomach. of course it should be horrific,i just thought it was especially so??? i am always wondering what people can possibly be thinking when they say that our times are so bad,in any way compared to anytime in the past. that scene reminded me what i have read in the history books,so, well done as usual.moreless
The last gladiator that got killed, totally looks like Delco from CSI: Miami.
Mira's spider monkey attack on the Roman commander was the best kill of the episode.
I need to hire a better party planner, NONE of my orgy's turn out that nice.
1.Illythia's agenda is shaky regarding the script. It tends to defy laws of logic.
2.The problem with Spartacus, is that they turned him into a righteous liberator with descent morality. Loosing all the aggresivity in the first season where he was even ready to kill his comrade for his wife, Spartacus became less spicy and more predictable, which makes him less enjoyable to watch. It's the writers fault. The actor himself does a pretty good job in replacement, but the scripts don't give him much chance. Maybe the crew decided to take this direction, to lower the burden on his shoulders and focus the attention to other actors? Well, he doesn't need it, let him be with true and brutl scripts!
3.The wrong side as usual.
By far the best episode of the season. I was starting to get worried.
Illythia is by far my favorite character this season. She's taken the reigns from Lucy Lawless as the evild sadistic one of the bunch. So far this new season of Spartacus is only "ok" at this point. I really hope things get better...this whole Spartacus running through the forrest was very weak.
There needs to be a spin off just focusing on the two women. The chemistry between Lucy and Viva, playing these two characters that have done such wretched things to one another, is still the best thing about this show. As fun as Madeleine Stowe and Emily Van Camp have been on "Revenge"; they have nothing on these two. Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, in my humble opinion. Katrina Law's Mira is continuing her rise on the list of great characters as well. She must have had fun getting to be in on the action this season.
The only thing missing, and his return is really starting to get mucked up now, is Dustin Clare's Gannicus. Oh and Ashur, still a dick, but Nick Tarabay is awesome in the part.moreless
Gosh! I Love Spartacus !.
Naijadmaster
I dont like Verinius at all, Illythia is awsome this year, great job by Viva Bianca easily my fav character, I agree that Spartacus is being overshadowed but not by Crixus, but instead by Illythia, Oemamaus will choose whatever suits him, he will go postal on Gannicus
Agree 100% about Illythia, she is stealing the show so far this season. Especially since in season 1 I didn't really warm up to her character, now I am totally enthralled by her performance each time she is on the screen.
I know the show is about Spartacus, but I think it's better the writer's are keeping him on the back burner while the audience warms up to the new actor instead of forcing him to command the show.
I enjoyed this episode a lot, probably my favorite of the season so far. For me, the best scenes were the ones that didn't have Spartacus. Not saying I don't like Spartacus, but the scenes with him in the woods weren't that interesting, especially compared to the party. I'm actually finding a lot of these side characters on the Roman politics side very interesting, and Viva Bianca (Illythia) has been killing it. Overall, I'm interested in what's going to happen.
What I want out of the gladiators is to bleed a lot and kill people and die in interesting ways. You're saying they have names? Lucretia is the true lead.
All the black dudes got killed - you are absolutely right.
And yes to all you said about Spartacus - when(or if?) Gannacus comes back he could easily be outshined by Crixus and Gannacus.
I accidentally deleted MightyMad's comment while trying to "like" it. Sorry, Might Mad! I'm pasting it back:
"What I got out of this episode: if you happened to be black and an escaped gladiator, there's a very good chance you will end up dying in a fight scene. Just stating fact here.
And can someone please train McIntyre to give him more muscle? It's hard to take him seriously as the baddest badasses of them all when most of his men are way more jacked then he is. He'll probably eventually equal Andy Whitfield in the dramatic department (hopefully), but he definitely needs to have a stronger physical presence. So get him to the NZ equivalent of Gold Gym, ASAP!"
LOL... thanks Seth. It's all good.
Gannicus is coming back
Actually, Illithyia's father never pushed her towards Varinius. It was the other way around. He was quite opposed to the idea. It was only after Lucretia's "persuasion" that the seed for possible matrimony between the two has been planted (Eww..sorry! Bad analogy) in Albinius' mind.
Crixus is definitely playing a much larger role this season. It's probably to take some of the weight off of Liam McIntyre shoulders and minimize the shock of a new lead. Plus Liam looks like a bit of a weakling and needs time to get some muscles.
