The latest in the sci-fi franchise is set for a May 8 release but work is already under way on the next chapter.
Movie magazine Variety reports that director JJ Abrams has again been asked by Paramount to head up the production.
The script will be written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.
Lindelof told Variety: "There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet.
"But we were so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."
Details of the plot of the next film have not been finalised, but Kurtzman, said: "Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month.
"With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

when will the movie com out
Doesn't matter 'cause THIS movie will ROCK!
This is Star Trek for the new Battlstar / Stargate generation with no camp and 10 times the awesome factor.
Looking forward to it...
talk about jumping the gun like pferreira86 they should wait unti the film is out!
I think they need to wait for the new movie to come out before starting on a sequel. They are perhaps getting a bit ahead of themselves.
