Stars impressed by Ricky Gervais

Stars were impressed by Ricky Gervais'
presenting skills

He may have mischievously delivered some near-the-knuckle jokes to the A-list audience, but his performance was the only thing most of the stars wanted to talk about after the ceremony.

Speaking at The Weinstein Company's celeb-packed bash, Kate Hudson raved: "He was good, it was really fun."

The party's host, legendary producer Harvey Weinstein, couldn't agree more, describing the Ricky as "hilarious and great".

"You can't do better than that - he was brilliant and wickedly mean!" he laughed.

U2's The Edge said he'd been bowled over by The Office creator's excellent job of hosting.

"Ricky Gervais was a surprise. I loved it, it was really cool," he enthused.

But last year's Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke found one area he wanted Ricky to improve on next time.

"I thought he didn't drink enough," the notoriously wild actor joked.

Interesting. Personally, I thought he was the BEST part of an otherwise stuffy show, like most award shows, where stars take themselves waaaaay too seriously. I just assumed that his truthful comedy, which I find refreshing (!), would not be a hit. I loved his digs at NBC, at Paul McCartney and particularly at Mel Gibson. No others deserved it more! Go Ricky, and I hope you were wrong: I hope they DO have you back...

Huh. I thought Gervais lived up to his tendency not to be remotely funny. Also ridiculously inappropriate - a masturbation gag in the first few minutes? Really??
The crack at Mel Gibson was a definite "holy crap" moment, but I was more laughing at the audacity rather than it actually being funny.
