Starz Renews Boss Before Season 1 Even Airs

THE NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

... Spoiler alert! Kelsey Grammer's Chicago mayor character doesn't die in the first season of Boss! Starz has ordered a second season of the drama, and you're excused if you can't remember whether you liked it or not because Season 1 hasn't even premiered yet. The rare move to renew something before it debuts is nothing new to Starz, which made a similar move with Spartacus: Blood and Sand a few years ago. Boss makes its series debut October 21. [Starz, via press release]

... Fox's Terra Nova, the Steven Spielberg-produced show to end all shows, finally debuted last night, but Fox executives shouldn't start wiping their butts with $100 bills just yet. Its ratings were decent, but by no means what the network was hoping for. About 9.22 million people tuned in, resulting in a 3.1 rating in the adult demo. Two and a Half Men, meanwhile, drew 20.52 million viewers and a 7.4 rating. Basically, people would rather watch Ashton Kutcher than dinosaurs, which is ironic because Ashton is dating a dinosaur. [TV By the Numbers]

... Mike Royce, the co-creator of the underwatched Men of a Certain Age, is back in business with a new comedy called Little Brother. Fox has agreed to a pilot as long as Royce can assemble a good cast; the comedy follows a man who discovers he has a half-brother who is an ex-con. [Deadline Hollywood]

... ABC is doing the U.K. rip-off thing by adapting the BBC Three series White Van Man. It's a blue-collar comedy about a man who takes over the family handyman business. Quick! Cancel Last Man Standing so Tim Allen will be available! [Deadline Hollywood]

... You'll soon have to go visit your grandfather to get your regular dose of kooky old people. Andy Rooney will make his last weekly appearance on 60 Minutes this Sunday. We'll miss your bizzaro rants, Andy! [NY Times]

THE CASTING NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

... Everyone loves True Blood's Pam! So I'm told. I stopped watching last season. But anyhoo, Kristin Bauer van Straten, who is indeed awesome, is hopping over to ABC's Once Upon a Time to play Maleficent, the evil wench from Sleeping Beauty. [TV Line]

... Jimmy Buffet is guest-starring on Hawaii Five-0. No, I didn't make it up. [EW]

... Terry O'Quinn will extend his stay on Hawaii Five-0 from six episodes to nine episodes, probably because he's a really big Jimmy Buffet fan. [TV Guide]

... The West Wing's Richard Schiff will guest-star on NBC's new comedy Up All Night as Will Arnett's psychiatrist dad. Schiff was recently cast in Showtime's House of Lies. [EW]

THE LEFTOVER NEWS YOU MAY OR MAY NOT NEED TO KNOW

... Lifetime has renewed Dance Moms for a second season. Phew! [Deadline Hollywood]

... Spike TV has ordered the reality docu-dramaticized series Diamond Divers. It's about people who dive... for diamonds! [Deadline Hollywood]

... And finally, because NBC has no brain of its own, the network is streaming the second episode of Whitney and the third episode of Up All Night on Yahoo! before they air on TV because that strategy worked for one of its competitors. Fox posted New Girl's pilot online for free before it aired, and it became the biggest new hit of the season. Networks, make up your mind! Do you like the internet or do you hate it!? Finally a pilot I can enjoy! That is good news having the confirmation aforehand that a new show will defenitely return for a second season! (Although you never really now nowadays...)

I'm looking forward to BOSS because of Kelsey Grammar all the more so as he will be playing a totally different role than in Frasier. Can't wait to see it! :)

I agree, I'm a huge Kelsey Grammer fan, the man can act. Also feels great going into the show that it will at the very least have two seasons. I think he will shine in a dramatic/badass role. Can't wait!

Expect those Terra Nova ratings to drop even further, after the rubbish they put on in the premiere

Ugh. I still can't believe the high ratings Two and a Half Men gets. It's the SAME sex and fart jokes every single episode. And yes, I understand that to know that, it means I also watch every episode. Shut up.

Terra Nova sucked...but with dinosaurs. And if there'd been more dinosaurs and less never-asked-for teen angst, it probably would've done better. Stupidity makes for cheap lube.

I have high hopes for Kristen Bauer as Maleficent. Not as high hopes for the actual show, but I'll be watching.

Boooo for Terra Nova numbers! I thought it was a great pilot and the show has lots of potential. And Tim just for the record I thought your dinosaur joke was hilarious

I have watched the two episodes of Up All Night and it's just disappointing. But, I did have high hopes for it. It needs to be funnier and lose Maya Rudolph. It's just a show to watch, when there's nothing else on TV.

The very short preview I saw of Boss, I couldn't tell much about it. But, I was still going to check it out anyway, because of Kelsey Grammer.

Wow people, I'm really surprised everyone is so offended lol. It's called a joke. Comedians/joksters often use this to elicit humor. Granted, you have to have a sense of humor to get it. Keep the jokes coming Tim, makes reading sometimes otherwise boring news pretty hilarious. I do love the zingers.

Just because you call it a joke doesn't make it funny. What Tim actually posted was an insult, and it was for no reason, especially since Demi Moore didn't have anything to do the story other than being married to Ashton Kutcher. It was tasteless and uncalled for.

Is that you Demi? Don't you have better things to be doing now? Like Ashton?

a sense of humor is what keeps me from liking this joke, because i sense that it's not funny.

That comment about Ashton Kutcher dating a dinosaur is nasty. Is Tim Surette angling to work for the Daily Mail perchance. I don't understand why *journalists* feel the need to be rude all the time. Is it just envy or what?

I keep hoping Boss will be the next Breaking Bad. Kelsey Grammer looks so bad ass. I watched Ashton Kutcher and Dinosaurs and both were just alright. Dinosaurs helped pass more time, but I'll actually return for more of Ashton.

Terra Nova 9.22 and Two and a Half Men 20.52?? Human behaviour never ceases to amaze me. Someone might say that Terra Nova isn't that special of a TV show. That might be the case. But it's still millions of times better than Two and a Half Men. So since Two and a Half Men is clearly inferior as a show, why would people watch it rather than Terra Nova? Why would you willingly choose the worse option, when you have a better option?

Speaking of dinosaurs, do you see who Kelsey Grammer looks like in that picture?

He looks like Earls boss in "Dinosaurs", minus the horns. See for yourself:

ratings is bullshatner. no way that many people watched that horrible show. i've said it many times, but until 100% of people in the US take part in the Neilson ratings, it's a 100% flawed system.

also, 2nd episode of Up All Night aired last week, unless you meant the third episode is available to stream.. it airs this week.

maybe tim wanted the joke to be ironically, consiously unfunny. but that would make it even worse. the writers on this site should stop mistaking ultra cynical and harsh (price petersons emmy recap) for funny and witty.

I can just imagine at the end of an episode, after defeating the perfectly tanned bad guys, Jimmy Buffet and Terry O'Quinn going to a Waikiki karaoke bar, and singing Margaritaville duet style.
