Starz Renews Magic City for Season 2, in Advance of the Series Premiere

Shazam! Open Sesame! Renewacadabra! Premium-cable network Starz has ordered a second city of its new series Magic City. Doesn't ring a bell? That's because Magic City hasn't debuted yet. Yep, Starz has renewed the new drama before even one second of footage made it to your TV screen, just like the network did last year with Boss.

Magic City stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a hotel tycoon who gets a little financial help from the mob with his latest project, a luxury hotel in 1959 Miami. Olga Kurylenko and Danny Huston also star.

The early renewal might be as much of a ploy to generate interest and grab new subscribers as it is an indication of the show's quality. I can't think of another reason why a network would make such a commitment before registering any public response. Starz is really making a push into original programming, and building cred is easier when you don't have a bunch of one-and-done shows, so that probably factors into the decisions as well. And when you look at Boss, which earned plenty of nominations last awards season and had a very good first outing, quality-wise (the ratings weren't that great, but that's the case with everything on Starz), Starz was at least able to recognize good television.

Season 1 of Magic City debuts on April 6, and a special preview of the pilot will air March 30 after the season finale of Spartacus: Vengeance.

This is one hell of a show. 10 out of 10. The pilot was totally a masterpiece in terms of cinematography. I don't know maybe I'm just too attracted to those nostalgic shows (also loved Pan Am but that didn't took long and lacked the depth and expenses) This one doesn't feel like cheep at all and acting, directing and screenplay are all awesome. I hope they keep up the good work. Danny Huston portrays an outstanding performance.

Don't be so hard on Starz you guys! They are trying to be a premium cable channel powerhouse like Showtime & HBO... They have had so many misses in the past, something besides Spartacus has to be a hit... Someday... But looking at this picture I highly doubt that day will be April 6th.

I think Magic City will be like Boss a big smelly pile of you know what

Boss was one of the greatest shows last year. Maybe you're just too dumb to see it.

Didn't Boss bomb terribly in the ratings department, even for a Starz show? Also, no plans of watching this show as experience has taught me that I can't stand dramas that take place prior to the 80s.

I know STARZ usually has good taste when it comes to picking up shows, except for the occasional stinker (*cough* Camelot), but I'm getting a strong "The Playboy Club" vibe from the promo for this show. Is it just me?

So thats what he meant by John Winchester. I was getting really confused.

I think the new rule on renewals is to wait six episodes to make sure no horses are killed...

A period drama starring John Winchester AND Danny Huston? I think I may just have to give this one a shot!

Alas, I think it is silly when networks renew a series prior to airing or even after just one episode. However, the exception to this rule is most definitely Game of Thrones.
