Pour one out (a cauldron?) for Steven Tyler, America's favorite beach witch and part-time talent show judge. Tyler announced today that he will NOT be back for a third season of American Idol, opting instead to focus more time on his previous day job as lead singer for an obscure indie band called Aerosmith. As his press release (awesomely) puts it:
"After some long...hard...thoughts…I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit... I strayed from my first love, AEROSMITH, and I'm back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I've got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band. The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass – the ultimate in auditory takeover…On Nov. 6, we are unleashing our new album, Music from Another Dimension on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars…IDOL was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it…Now it's time to bring Rock Back. ERMAHGERD."
Tyler's leaving the show amid rumors of a major retooling and the very possible exit of fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson. Personally I really enjoyed his critiques, which ran the gamut from "You have a beautiful spirit" to "You look great tonight, girl." But then randomly he'd really hate a performance out of the blue? You could never tell which way he'd swing and that's just good TV. Farewell, sweet Steven.
What do YOU think: Is American Idol better off or are you bummed?
