Steven Tyler Quits American Idol

Pour one out (a cauldron?) for Steven Tyler, America's favorite beach witch and part-time talent show judge. Tyler announced today that he will NOT be back for a third season of American Idol, opting instead to focus more time on his previous day job as lead singer for an obscure indie band called Aerosmith. As his press release (awesomely) puts it:

"After some long...hard...thoughts…I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit... I strayed from my first love, AEROSMITH, and I'm back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I've got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band. The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass – the ultimate in auditory takeover…On Nov. 6, we are unleashing our new album, Music from Another Dimension on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars…IDOL was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it…Now it's time to bring Rock Back. ERMAHGERD."

Tyler's leaving the show amid rumors of a major retooling and the very possible exit of fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson. Personally I really enjoyed his critiques, which ran the gamut from "You have a beautiful spirit" to "You look great tonight, girl." But then randomly he'd really hate a performance out of the blue? You could never tell which way he'd swing and that's just good TV. Farewell, sweet Steven.

What do YOU think: Is American Idol better off or are you bummed?

So that's what the drunk guy was trying to tell me!!!!

All I've heard him blabber was: "Steve and Tyler will leave the show "Americans Are Dull" to go on tour with Aaron Smith..."

Anyhow, he was the only reason why I came back to the show so... bye bye again.

He can't even sing anymore. Who would pay to listen to him screech like a cat falling of a building?

I will truly miss Steven Tyler. He's the only reason I watched AI ever again after Simon left.

I wish him and Aerosmith all the best and success with their rebirth!

As for AI, so far, it looks like Adam Lambert is doing a solo judging job this season? Would they dare bring back Paula? Will they fill the panel with AI alumni? I guess we stay tuned!

When first started, it looked like he was going to take Paul Abdul's place as biggest trainwreck on mainstream TV.

But by the end he was the heart and soul of the show.

He knows better than anybody. Go out on a high.

I think you could strike "on a" from your last statement to show what Tyler really knows best.

Idol is a sunken ship. Was fun even up until Paula left -- not that she was the only reason or anything, it just signaled big changes across the board. I know the kids who come on the show and sing their hearts out still have talent (well, once you get to the final stages, anyway), but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I haven't watched in a few years.

meh! Not a surprise, as to the last few years, celebrities have left this cushy job consecutively to go do other things. I just Hope Randy can hang in there so thier can be some sign of consistancy. Unless he is as sick of Idol as half of America and the current judges are. J. LO will be the next to quit Im sure.

When I hear "meh", i picture a dark cartoon cloud over the speaker's head and his fingers sticking through the holes in his pockets.

Bummed, adding Steven as a judge was a genius move. His outfits alone were usually worth tuning in for.

bummed of course. He says the craziest, most incomprehensible, entertaining things. I only watch the beginning episodes where people suck, though, so changing the judge won't really make all that much difference to me. I fully admit I just watch it to make fun of the crazies who have shitty friends who actively encourage their delusions.
