The National Football League and Super Bowl XLIII television-rights holder NBC announced that Bruce Springsteen has landed the coveted gig as Super Bowl halftime entertainment. Yes, The Boss will belt out some "Born in the USA" at America's premiere sporting event--now go bake an apple pie.
Super Bowl XLIII is being held in Tampa, Florida on February 1, 2009. The event is consistently the most-watched television program of the year, and--thanks to cheap beer, seven-layer dip, and buffalo wings--helps America retain its title of fattest country in the world. According to NBC, last year's Fox telecast of Super Bowl XLII was watched by more than 148 million viewers in the US alone.
Springsteen will be joined by his E Street Band (including Late Night with Conan O'Brien's Max Weinberg). A rock legend, Springsteen follows last year's guest Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Other musicians of note to appear during the sporting event's break include Prince, U2, The Rolling Stones, and Janet Jackson's right breast.
