After being elected as Kansas State Senator, and then promptly meeting his maker at the close of season five of Smallville, Jonathan Kent (Jonathan Schneider) is to make his return to the show in season 10's "Lazurus" episode.
Returning after a five-year absence, there remains the conspicuous question as to how they are going to return this character in a believable manner, without his random appearance seeming too contrived.
TV.com predicts that it will most likely be an emotional reunion between father and son -- most likely forming the inevitable "dead relative gives advice at crucial time" routine.
As production kick starts on the final series of the show, the producers and distributors have dropped numerous hints about various ex-cast members (including Kristin Kreuk) making a return to the show to contribute to its swan-song.
Superman himself, Tom Welling, is particularly keen to see the return of Michael Rosenbaum:
"I want to see Lex [Luthor]," Welling told MTV News. "I want to see him come back. In the show, he's still alive ... I want to know how that relationship really turns out. Because that's the big relationship that I believe propelled Clark to become Superman."
Schneider is also expected to appear in at least one other episode in the new season.
Season 9 of Smallville will be released on DVD in Australia this spring.
