Supernatural: A Winchester Reunion, the Return of Fan Favorites, and More Hints About Season 11

The fans packed Comic-Con’s biggest room on Sunday morning to hear what Supernatural stars Jared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha Collins, Mark Sheppard, showrunner Jeremy Carver, and writer Andrew Dabb would say about having passed the 10-year milestone. Where do you go after a decade of saving people, hunting things, losing friends, dying and resurrecting, almost eating pie, and driving the Impala?

Going into Season 11, the show will first have to address the lingering issues left from the finale. Although Dean is Mark of Cain-free, the Darkness, an evil that existed before God created the world, was unleashed as a result. When we saw them last, Dean Sam, and Baby were engulfed in the Darkness’ smoky tendrils, while Castiel was going after Crowley. So what's next?

“This year we are going back to a little bit more of an epic feel with a Big Bad, with a quest for the brothers to unite on," said Carver. "[The Darkness] is a pre-Biblical story that has never been told."

“I think we’ll beat it because we’re not the Lose-chesters," Padalecki joked.

Ackles answered more seriously. "What I like about where we’re going is the brothers are united," he said. "We’re back to normal, so to speak, and we have a common target. I’m excited to get back to that original format.”

As always, you can expect Dean and Castiel's bromance to flourish, but if you're wondering why Castiel has never really forged a bond with Sam, Collins explained that "the height difference is too jarring." Well, he's not called Moose for nothing.

Additionally, Season 11 will also see a few familiar faces. Carver confirmed that a few fan favorite characters will return, but they’re "coming back in a surprise way." From the shouts in the crowd, Felicia Day's Charlie, who died last season, is top on the priority list for many fans. When once such fan demanded to know why she was killed off, Carver said, "People die on the show… beloved [people die] on the show… we have to go where the story takes us. If we’re doing our job right, people fall in love with the characters."

For what it's worth, Ackles said that fans should be happy about the time they spent with her because she was initially just supposed to be appear in one episode.

As is tradition, the panel closed with a look at the season-long gag reel. By now you should know it's great, but in case you want to see for yourself:

Here's what else we learned during the panel:

What came before: The panel presented a retrospective of the first 10 seasons in honor of last year’s 200th episode. It’s epic, it’s rock ‘n’ roll, and hilarious all at once. It’s so fun that it almost makes us like Nickelback. Almost. We'll embed it as soon it's made available!

More Meta-natural: Dabb hinted at "something really fun" coming in Episode 4.

Ackles in charge: The actor confirmed he's directing the premiere (which fans would know if they follow the actors on Twitter!). Ackles said that directing his fellow actors is easy because all the actors know their characters so well by now... "except for Misha.”

Crowley’s fate: Sheppard disappointed fans when he said his character was truly dead on the show, which of course was met by a healthy dose of disbelief. "It’s been an amazing journey. I showed up as a guest star kissing a very tall man under a bridge… but even if I knew what happened, I wouldn’t damn well tell you because it’s so much fun,” Sheppard said.

Battling childhood demons: When asked if the cast had fought any monsters on the show that actually scared them as children, Padalecki revealed that Bloody Mary freaked him out. Collins revealed a fear of Santa Claus (after a misguided attempt by his parents to authenticate the experience by photographing his uncle in a Santa suit by his bed while he was sleeping), and Sheppard said that he was scared of Doctor Who’s Cybermen and is waiting for them to appear on the show.

Supernatural returns Wednesday, October 7 at 9pm on The CW.

It's hard to stay "angry" at Supernatural for too long, even if the latest seasons tend to comprise of at least as many ups as downs. It helps knowing that the cast and crew still hold a good deal of love for their show after a whole decade.

But I don't know if it'll be so easy getting over the fact that these two guys would rather potentially doom the world (again) and unleash primordial evil than even think of sacrificing themselves for the so called greater good. That's a far cry from the Sam & Dean I used to know. Plus I still have huge problems with the abundant inconsistencies that plagued the most recent storyline(-s).

Glad I wasn't the only one who was hit hard by Charlie's death. She breathed a lot into the show and had a good rapport with both brothers/ good chemistry with both actors. But c'mon, this is Supernatural and since Sam and Dean will never get killed off permanently, nor {by extension at this point} can Castiel and Crowley either (probably), the side characters that we (may or may not) come to really like (Ash, Pamela, Ellen, Jo, Rufus, Bobby, Kevin, and now Charlie) at some point die brutal deaths to push the story forward and keep the emo angsty feel to the show. It's been the formula, y'all.

But The Darkness is sounding more interesting. I'm kinda liking not knowing what to expect for Season 11

I was hoping for that as well, especially since Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently said he'd like to come back to the show. But now he's also signed on to be in the Good Wife as well as the already mentioned Extant and he's doing the new Batman movie. The guys all over the place, which is great for him as an actor but bad for our chances of seeing the return of John Winchester.

Being a regular on a show pays way more money. He'll never be a regular on SPN because that throws off the dynamic of the brothers.

All the talk at SDCC was that this will be a brothers united season. They will be issue free, fighting together against the Darkness.

So no trailer for Season 11, not even a teaser? Instead we get a gag reel of Season 10. Greatly disappointed.

Jensen said at the SDCC SPN panel that they're only 4 days into shooting season 11, so there's no footage yet for a teaser.

Yea I know but I was hoping they'd do something at least like POI did with a voice over. Something to get you hyped for the new season.

Jared spoke @ the SPN press room following the panel. He said the 4th episode is going to be titled "Baby" and it's going to be all about the Impala and we will see Sam & Dean from the Impala's perspective.

That sounds suspiciously like The Doctor's Wife(coincididentally also a 4th episode) but I'm sure it would be wonderful and original.

Here's the link to Jared talking about it at the SPN Press room following the panel today if you're interested-- Click Here. He begins talking about it around the 4:35 mark. I've not seen the Doctor's Wife, so I have no idea about any similarities between the two.

Ok that doesn't sound so much like The Doctor's Wife. The idea actually reminds me of a How I Met your Mother episode where the same few minutes are shown every time from a different room, until the audience gets the whole picture. Obviously it's not like that either, but still.
It is going to be weird though, since it's been a while since they gave us the feeling that they were living in a car. Not just because of the bunker, but because of other things as well. They Mostly just arrive at the case scene with it nowdays. Not much driving around town.
I have confidence in this show. It would be cool.

It's about the Tardis(this ship the Doctor has been traveling and living in for some centuries) getting a human form. Occaisonally(when they are alone) the Doctor likes to call her Sexy.

Thanks, yeah I think it's definitely going to be a different episode. They all seem real excited about it since they kept referencing episode 4. Jared, though, was the one who spilled the most beans in that interview. They said they want to recapture more of a seasons 1-3 feeling with season 11.

Liking the sound of 'epic feel with a Big Bad, with a quest for the brothers to unite on' but I've been burned before Supernatural.

Who am I kidding. I've devoted 10 years to this show I'll see it through anyway.

I'm still expecting a stunning 1 or 2 episode opener followed by alot of meandering, filler, side stuff etc. then an epic finale that leaves us wanting more.

Tried and true ;)

I liked Charlie from the first time I saw her on Eureka, and will really be sorry if she is truly gone from the show.

Charlie wasn't even originally even in Eureka, only the last season which was pretty much the worst one.
