For the last several years, Thursdays on The CW has been etched in stone: Smallville at 8 p.m., followed by Supernatural at 9 p.m. The two seemed like a match made in heaven, thanks to their science-fiction and paranormal-driven plotlines. But business is business, and the two will now go their separate ways.
The CW is breaking up the couple that's been together since March 2006, with Supernatural getting the time period in the divorce. Smallville will now air on Friday nights, and Supernatural will stay put on Thursdays, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Moving into Smallville's old digs will be the newbie The Vampire Diaries, one of the network's biggest freshman shows. And with Vampire star Ian Somerhalder leading into Supernatural's Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, it could be a teen girl's dream.
The move makes sense for The CW, as Supernatural and Smallville are now strong enough to help other shows. But Thursday is a bloodbath, with The Mentalist, Fringe, and Flash Forward moving into the night that already includes Grey's Anatomy, CSI, and The Office. Total TiVo explosion.
The CW is also expected to pair up Melrose Place with 90210 on Tuesdays, and The Beautiful Life with America's Next Top Model on Wednesdays. Expect an official announcement tomorrow at The CW's upfront presentation.

I just wanted to say that Supernatural is my favorite show. Second would be Smallville, even though I think it could be better. I hate the breakup. The only night I wanted to watch regular tv was Thursdays and now I think I'll just tvo the 2 shows. There isn't anything the rest of the week that I like except for House. At least the only commercials I'll be watching will be through House. I can skip those on tvo on the other 2. Since Supernatural and Smallville, no matter what I had going on I would make time for Thursdays. Now I'll just tvo and watch it on the weekends. I'll watch the cable shows instead. It beats waiting for one show on that night. Maybe I'll find some good movies or tv shows I did not know was out there. Great way to run those ads on Thursdays WB. Just saying. Way to go.moreless
ok... so i'm really excited for the vampire diaries to air, just cuz i loved/ still love the books, so i'm hoping the show will be good... and even though its sad that they are breaking up smallville and supernatural I can kinda get how pairing up the vampire diaries with supernatural makes sense, for the supernatural plotlines, and no bad blood with smallville but I only liked that show when it took place in highschool after their graduation I just lost my interest in the show... and supernatural is suppose to be going into their final season... so no matter what it's all sad and thursdays will never be the same pretty soon :(
This looks like a disaster for their supposed final season. It will go out on a whimper.
this does not seem like a good idea....
Thursday will never be the same :{
The Friday time slots are usually where shows are sent to die. Smallville should have been sent there a loooooong time ago.
Dude what the heck you cant just separate the inseparable so what the show is basically nonsense now i still love it and who will watch vampire diaries Smallville may have no storyline now, and may have been way better in season 1-5 and now its junk but its good junk OK. gosh.Oh yeah and this has nothing to do with with smallville but I LOVE YOU KRYTE Super Natural All the way baby
I like both. To each their own.
I permanently jumped the shark with Smallville last season. The show is complete nonsense. At least now, on Friday nights, it might die a quiet death without further tarnishing Supernatural's supreme status as the The Best Show on TV.
Vampire Diaries will probably be hot...just the kind of fresh blood Thursday's on the CW need!
That sucks!!I dont like it!! Im not gonna watch Vampire Diaries anyways.... :( Man!
I stopped watching it regulary a few seasons ago so I agree with tribalchic it is away to kill the show
lol....I think this is their less direct approach of trying to remotely kill Smallville by hanging it out to dry in the television graveyard known as "friday". Its kinda the equivalent of Officespace's moving Milton into the basement so that they can make room and ultimately forget he ever existed.
Why friday?! This is not good for the show.
Thursday is gonna be a miss
smallville just got crapppier. season 8 started off so well and then they destroyed chloe's character with her relationship with doomsday and it felt like season 3 again with lana and clark's on and off fighting. supernatural is an amazing show and i wish more people would watch it.
I stopped watching Smallville years ago but I really hope Supernatural says on for a long time! Supernatural has a wide range of topics not just demons but also werewolves, vampires, shape-shifters, tricksters, lost souls, etc.. Smallville just lost track of Superman becoming Superman rather than SuperClark and the Justice League
1matio1, you did yourself a favor by quitting Smallville after season 4. The next three seasons after that are pretty rough. And season 8 is great but the finale was just... don't even get me started.
I stopped watching Smallville live on tv around season 3, i've only seen season 1 of Supernatural live. i've just watched them on DVDs after that
i ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY hate how they pack Thursdays like this. normally I watched Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy, but now them moving Fringe means Grey's Anatomy will have to get taped or something in another room (I don't have a DVR/TiVo) and Ugly Betty moved to Fridays so that's fine because Flash Forward is taking it's place and I'm defintely watching that (atleast to see if i like it) but seriously. why is Thursday the "IT" night that all shows get moved to? it's horrible for people like myself who don't just watch certain genre of shows. i like nearly everything
Anyway, the slot doesn't matter so much as the ending. I'm really hoping Smallville gets something resembling a respectable ending. They should have killed it ages ago. As for Supernatural, I think the plan is to end it after this next year. I fully support the plan, that way it'll go out on a high instead, instead of circling the drain like Smallville has been doing since season four. Sometimes these shows just go on for FAR too long.
Oh, so that's where the news is... huh. I could have sworn it said Vampire Diaries was getting Supernatural's spot. Oh well. I get competing with the best you have, but you'd think to maximize these networks would put their best shows on nights with less competition. That way the good shows stay alive with loyal audiences not having to compete with other shows. Of course, I don't care about the rest really. Supernatural still has my attention and I doubt it's going away any time soon.
i'm really glad supernatural is keeping thursday nights. it was about damn time to give them some credit! i think is the most underrated show on tv right now.
Not really bothered about SV as i don't, and never have watched it. Just glad Supernatural get to keep their spot! It's just fantastic and THE best show on TV! LOVE IT!!!! And besides i think like it says in the article they are both strong enough to stand alone!
You should really watch Supernatural, sabrips, it's amazing ^_^. I stopped watching Smallville ages ago... I mean, I see previews and it doesn't even make sense anymore @_@.
When they start moving shows around, it generally means the beginng of the end. I really didn't care for the cliffhanger for SMALLVILLE. They should have left it alone when they went to the last commerical break. Clark and Doomsday crashes, Cloe hanging over Jimmy's body, and Lois missing in action. That would had made a better cliffhanger. Then comming back to commerical break at Jimmy's gravesite, Clark Kent don't wont to be human anymore, but hey Lois is still missing. Oh yeah, and that Lex or not(who cares). But I still be watching SMALLVILLE....
People didn't stop watching Smallville for 8 years (even through the tough seasons) and they probably will keep watching it until it's over (season 9...please?!), even if it's on Fridays, the dreaded timeslot night. As for Supernatural getting the sweeter side of the deal in the "divorce," YAY for them! I think it's fitting that it stays put for the last and final season.
Damn, is Smallville still going? I watched the first four seasons but then New Zealand televison stopped broadcasting it. Are they up to season 9 now?
I've never seen Supernatural... And I will follow Smallville at world's end...
blah blah blah, whoe cares, are those jerks gonna actually renew their one good show (Reaper) or not?!?!
I hope we will see a whole season 9 and the ratings won't kill it too soon. Smallville is truely my best show on TV and i want to see a proper ending. Season 8 was just amazing and the ending soo mysterious!
Season 8 of smallville by far the best season. It showed that there was blending with the DC Comics storyline, adding villains, heroes and tried to tie up with the canon universe. With lana finally gone, ***spoilers*** and "henry" james olsen dead ***end of spoilers***, superman is about to begin. I am so thrilled to see how they will tie it up next..
Well, thank god that season 9 was going to be the last season of smallville anyway cause this is def going to bring ratings down for the show. NOBODY BUT OLD PEOPLE AND LOSERS stay home on friday at 7pm. And its so obvious that the main demographic of smallville is young. haha this is why cw is considered the projects of network television. theyve had their chances.
I love Supernatural, best CW show! Why do they even show so many CSIs!
what is cw thinking don't they realize that when you put a show on friday nites you kill it who is gonna be home to watch it? friday nite football and partying
Well that is the only reason I watch CW. If they split Smallville and Supernatural, CW will be DEAD!!!! Together these shows are the best of CW
With the demise of Terminator, SG-1, SG Atlantis, and Battlestar, thank God there will be something to watch on Friday night. Hopefully they will spruce up the writing for the (last?) season. Let's face it, it's about time to bring Smallville to a hopefully satisfactory conclusion. I'm still a fan, but I believe it has gone downhill the last couple of years. Probably inevitable in having to transition from farmboy to big city reporter. They should have left Lana dead in the firey explosion a couple of years ago. It would have made the transition to Lois a lot more satisfying. Instead we were forced to endure more excruciatingly painful CLANA episodes. Stay gone Lana, let Clark finally get it on with Lois, and end the series on a high note.moreless
Well, at least now there'll be something good on Fridays. Strangely, Fridays are a dud in the TV universe for me. Not as excited about SV as I used to be a year ago, but I still watch it. SPN is a must! Best current show on TV right now.
LOVE Smallville-indifferent to Supernatural--Will follow Smallville to Friday--But I do hope the new schedule doesn't kill Smallville.
It's gonna be weird not seeing SPN and SV together, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Nothing could keep me from watching SPN, and I'm gonna continue to support SV, even if it's on Fridays. Plus, the Vampire Diaries sounds like it will be cool. It might even bring in some new viewers to SPN. Even if it doesn't, SPN has a strong fanbase all on its own. :D
Yay that Supernatural got to keep it's spot. It's my Thursday show. If it was on Saturdays, there'd be a total conflict with Dollhouse.
Smallville is still running? whatever~
i will watch supernatural whenever they move it, other shows~ step aside~
=P
Firecracker666, if it makes you feel any better, most Americans don't get the USA networks either. Why do you suppose antacids sell so well over here? Constant frustration leads to heartburn.
Networks do not care about viewers feelings. The bottom line is those American $$$$.
Why CW? Whhhyyy? They know Smallville and Supernatural together on a Thursday works, why change that? I bet the new show just gets cancelled anyway. I so do not get the US networks - it seems to be stupid decision after stupid decision.
don't care about that. Better like the new schedule cause in Vampire Diaries there's Somerhalder and adding Supernatural = completely superb Thursday night.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING MEWHY DON'T THEY JUST MOVE THE NEW SHOW TO FRIDAY AND LEAVE SMALLVILLE ON IT'S ORIGINAL DAY & TIME. I GUESS WE'LL SEE IF SMALLVILLE STILL GETS THE GOOD RATING SINCE THE FIRST SEASON.
this cant be happening. I love supernatural and it is my favorite show on tv but as soon as i start liking the show fringe fox moves it to thursday nights and it is on the same time as supernatural. I dont have Tivo and i might watch it online but i like watching good shows on tv on my large screen.
the disbanding of the unit is a shame. i think it would of done better if it was after ncis.
Well if Ian Somerhalder is on this Vampire Diaries show, I might just watch it >;). Supernatural is the best show on TV. It'll hold up like it always has :).
