Supernatural: Sympathy for the Fangirls

La la I can't hear you, Mr. Apocalypse starter.

Supernatural returned with a bang last night, delivering a rock-solid premiere that perfectly sets the stage for a Hellish Season Five. The Apocalypse is almost upon us, and as expected, Sam and Dean have pretty significant roles in cleaning up the mess.

The title of the episode, "Sympathy For the Devil" (borrowed from a Rolling Stones song), was very apropos. There's an instant urge by society to portray Satan as a snarling, horned, mega-beast, but the writers of Supernatural have given us something else--the Lucifer of lore, a fallen angel who was punished "for loving God too much." Though he may be responsible for completely eradicating the human race, I got a feeling I'm going to like the little guy. Big ups to the woman who portrayed the hallucination of the meatbag's wife, for making us actually feel bad for the Prince of Darkness.

We're used to seeing demons jump right into human vessels, but the angle that Lucifer (and Michael) needs permission from his Chosen One to take over his skin was a brilliant choice. Creator Eric Kripke and company are developing Lucifer into a multi-faceted character, which is essential for all great villains. I can't wait to see Mark Pellegrino (Lost's Jacob and Dexter's Paul) strut around as Old Scratch.

It was also nice to see a wink-and-a-nod to the Superfans, in the form of a crazed fangirl who was in the middle of writing some erotic Sam-on-Dean Winchest incest fan fiction (believe us, it does actually exist out there somewhere). Supernatural is at its best when it lets its hair down and has a little fun, and this episode had plenty of that.

Despite the fangirl's prospects of brotherly love, things are not all well among the Winchesters. Sam is in the doghouse for accidentally unleashing the apocalypse (oops) and Dean lets him know he done f***ed up. It's tough to see the brothers squabble, but there will certainly be a payoff around the corner.

Great start to Season Five.

Other notes:

--"Angel Condom." "Water balloon filled with Chunky soup." "He looks like Cate Blanchett." Brilliant.
--What a fantastic Lost-ish intro. Fade to white. Deafening noise. Popping up in a plane. I half-expected to see Sawyer across the aisle.
--What more can be said about Castiel? Dude is a force to be reckoned with. And what kind of Divine intervention allowed him to be put back together and teleported Sam and Dean? God--who has been said to not even be paying attention--seems like too easy an answer.
--How will Michael find his way into Dean, if ever? It would be great to see Supernatural's take on the famous Archangel, but if it's at the expense of losing Dean for a few episodes, count me out.
--Is it just me, or was the short "previously on" ("Then" in Supernatural parlance) super kick-ass? Maybe I just miss the classic rock.

Supernatural airs Thursday nights at 9pm on The CW.

I don't think I've ever been so excited for the next episode of Supernatural. I actually watched it the day it came out, which I don't think I've ever done before. And it did not disappoint. And no, you're not alone in thinking the previously was especially kickass. Although Supernatural does the season intro and end previouslies better than any other show.

i love how music (classic rock that is) is so important part of this show (probably thanks to Dean cause well, i have no idea what kind of music sam likes but we all know Deans love for classic rock). i mean, note the title! i just missed this so much. and yeah now that you've pointed out, there were some Lost-ish moments, which was cool cause Jacob becomes the Satan. which is kind of interesting too, i mean what's Jacobs deal in Lost, who he really is? i know these are different shows bla bla but it just makes me think, Does Jacob and Lucifer have somethin in common?!

It wasn't really a "new" angle that makes it necessary for Lucifer and Michael to need permission before they can take over the body of their human host - Castiel had to get permission from Jimmy last season and it was pointed out that an Angel cannot take a human body without permission during last year so it wasn't a big surprise that Lucifer and Michael need permission, In fact if they hadn't needed permission I would have been really f*&&&d off. But maybe that's just me'.

As the opening track was ACDC Thunderstruck I am not sure how anyone can say they missed the classic rock!! (unless of course I alone got a different version of the episode)

I loved this episode. Though you're right, I missed the classic rock. AC/DC's 'Highway to Hell' would have been so ironically perfect for the 'Then'.

They forgot one memorable quote: "..and then sam touched...no..caressed dean's clavicle. This is wrong said Dean and I don't wanna be right replied Sam in a husky voice." That was the awkwardest i felt in watching all the episodes and i squealed like a pig through most of the gore scenes in all the seasons. But this one seriously took the cake in making me feel..uncomfortable. I laughed...yet was stuck in a major WTF moment. I'm not a ***phobe or anything but...gay incest in two characters im attracted to is just too much for me.

I've been a mega fan from the beginning & just gotta say everyone at supernatural your all genius & very talented. I thought "Sudden Death" was a great song to tag with the beginning of this season & my favorite quote from this episode was Dean's " what is that peanut butter" to meg.

Awesome beginning to the season!! Supernatural being what it is, my instinct says that the Big 'Bad' L saved Cas as well as putting S & D on the plane to enable some future fun frollicks for S5!!!

Bellamy Young played Nick's hallucination to perfection.:) Even if it was just a short appearance, I'm just glad to see her in something after Dirty Sexy Money. Becky the fangirl did good as well. Sam: Uhm, Becky, can you quit touching me? Becky: No. Awesome season opener.:D
