Kotter is coming to the big screen, and he'll be played by Ice Cube. Dimension Films announced that the cherubic rapper will star in and coproduce the movie version of Welcome Back, Kotter.
"There was no bigger fan of the original show than me, and I'm very excited to be able to put a new twist on it," Cube said.
The 1970s sitcom told the story of Gabe Kotter, a teacher who presided over an inner-city gaggle of lovable hooligans called The Sweathogs. Kotter was once a Sweathog himself, and as he teaches the students math and science, he also teaches them about life.
Cube has had luck in the comedy genre before. Barbershop and Are We There Yet?, both starring Ice Cube (real name O'Shea Jackson), each grossed in the neighborhood of $80 million.
Dimension has signed Tom Brady to write and direct Kotter. Brady's previous credits include penning the Rob Schnieder comedies The Hot Chick and The Animal.
No additional casting has been announced for the film.
