Syfy Renews The Expanse for Season 2

Syfy got one more thing in the books before 2016, renewing its new series The Expanse for a second season on the last day of the year. There's no word on how many episodes the second season will consist of or when it will air, but using the power of deductive reasoning, we can confidently guess it will be 13 episodes (just like the current first season) and air in late 2016.

The Expanse is an ambitious sci-fi series set two centuries in the future when humans have colonized parts of the solar system. Thomas Jane stars as a detective investigating the disappearance of a young woman, but his search leads him to uncovering a vast conspiracy that likely goes all the way to the top, or very close to it.

The series, which is one of Syfy's best-looking shows to date and harkens back to the hardcore science fiction Syfy used to be known for, has been met with mostly favorable (and somewhat confused) reviews. Here on TV.com, the users have given it a sturdy 8.8 rating.

The Expanse is currently in its first season, and Episode 5 will air Tuesday at 10pm on Syfy.

The show improved a lot, but I am still a bit confused and somehow unable to fully follow the details. Every time I watch it I have the feeling I must missed and episode or two.
Also somehow the characters are still not feeling at home... almost like they can go and be replaced and I wouldn't care too much.
Anyway good show, back to the scifi roots. About time or you would need to rename the chanel again.

Good. I don't think Thomas Jane is the main attraction of the series, but Wes Chatman & his crew is what makes it good.

Wes Chatman reminds me of Adam Baldwin in Firefly.

I now have mixed feelings. I still love the show (presently).

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of reading an entry on Wikia about the book series which told me where the books go... and they use a plot device which I am very tired of. Like sickeningly so.

But beyond that, everything else at least sounds cool. So if I can get through the long part I don't like... I think I'll still be happy overall.

Uh, the first season only has 10 episodes, and Syfy announced that the second season will have 13 episodes and premier in early 2017. No wonder you were confused by the premier episode, you can't even copy and paste simple facts from a press release succesfully.

Since the horrible name change in 2009 (why? because "hardcore" Sci-Fi is/was out of fashion?) there wasn't much good on the channel which was reflected in the ratings. Well there was Haven but that's not SF. Last year ( i can say it now) they gave us Killjoys and Dark Matter. And now pew-pew or shall we say tweet-tweet

Some of the "scientific" details are pretty well done. Creating artificial gravity by spinning up Ceres? That might actually work.
Ever been on a Graviton amusement ride? you know when suddenly the bottom "falls" out. The ride can reach a maximum speed of 24 rpm in less than 20 seconds, At this speed, the riders are experiencing centrifugal force equivalent to three times the force of gravity. That's the Science in Science-fiction. I'm game! Hardcore SF FTW :)

12 Monkeys is amazingly good and solidly hard science fiction! I have to admit that I liked Defiance quite a bit, though mostly for some of the characters. But it was solidly science fiction, too.
It's probably too easily to really judge what Expanse will become, but I'm liking it so far, and the book series has a lot of fans.
SyFy has actually been on a roll lately.

The whole point is that it's a mystery and you don't know everything by end of episode 1. All the negative reviews are from "too many characters, too many story lines, I don't know what's happening" well a show named game of thrones was like this in its first few episodes. If you are looking for an action sci fi show with no story, character development, or mystery, then expanse is not for you

Game of Thrones is easy. Everyone is f#@!king everyone else, literally and figuratively, for a chance to sit on an ugly throne. Some dragons in puberty are not sure if they love their mommy. And winter is, indeed, coming--finally! :)

With the current pace it will be several seasons to just cover first book. I do not mind since it falls into my big bucket of "I like", next to killjoy and the other newer sf shows. Decent recovery so drag it out but keep up with the book at least.

Based on the episode names (which have all been released), the first season will cover the events up to the end of the first book: The season finale is titled "Leviathan Wakes", and we know what that means ;)

No, it covers up to around chapters 30-32 in the book, which has 55 chapters.

Are you sure? Have they said as much anywhere? I'm gonna post some **SPOILERS** and I'm gonna try to hide them, but I don't trust this site's formatting so you've been warned :)

**SPOILERS**

Chapter 33 begins with news of the death of Eros spreading around the solar system... but that's hardly a "Leviathan Wake[ing]", it's just a horrible disaster on a space station. It isn't until Chapter 49 that Eros shocks the hell out of everyone by dodging the Nauvoo, and that's the moment I always associated with the title "Leviathan Wakes" (i.e. "DON'T YOU FUCKING TOUCH ME!"). If they cut out the whole Theros bit (which honestly they probably should) and just make everything happen in and around Eros, there's not that much ground to cover after Chapter 33---a bunch of critical plot events, absolutely, but low on complexity. I bet they could fit them into a few (high-octane, fast-paced) episodes.

That being said, I mistakenly thought the first season had 13 episodes, not 9; despite the fact that a lot of the book could be cut out without hurting the plot too badly, that's still a lot of ground to cover in five episodes. So you very well may be right.

And Season 2 is going to be one hell of a ride if they move straight from Eros to the action on Ganymede!

The synopsis for the episodes are pretty clear about how much is covered in the first season.

Episode 8:

A derelict vessel holds a potentially devastating secret. Holden and his crew cross paths with Miller on Eros. Avasarala receives bad news.

Episode 9:

Miller, Holden and his crew are trapped on Eros. Avasarala discovers the origin of the mystery ships.

Episode 10:

Miller, Holden and his crew fight their way off Eros. Avasarala fears for the stability of Earth’s government.

Thomas Jane has been a criminally underused actor over the years. Regardless of the movie quality he was great as the Punisher. He has a certain Christopher Lambert type presence (also a massively underused ball of charisma)

Great news!

To all the people whining about it, go watch downtown abby or something and stay the hell away from sci fi.

We have had a good 10 year stint without any even passable sci fi, and it is shallow tools like you that will give us 10 more if you had your way.

It is a decent show with a good story line, what do expect LOTR in space or something? Some seriously spoiled people out there these days.

Glad the show has been renewed -- and it really does feel quite a bit different than SyFy's other current shows; I can't help feeling a lot of BSG in it.

It really does not bode well reading your comments here, and in other places as well. Many people everywhere say they can not follow what goes on, and many people say it is boring and slow in the first episodes. Very many people says episode four was the only (first) good one. Do people today lack all forms of concentration, patience, interest in anything other than pew-pew action?

I also liked episode four but not because it was an intense action episode with lots of special effects, it was just good. I ALSO liked the other episodes just as much as number four. They were also just good. Just as exciting and suspenseful. They all have an interesting story and everything moves along fast. It is really not that hard to follow what happens in the show, there are three separate locations and stories, that slowly is growing into each other. Stop watching the smartphone at the same time perhaps? :)

It really scares me for the future of entertainment if the audience only wants fast-paced pew-pew action with amazing special effects. If the audience can not even deal with like slower short segments of a show where people talk and nothing explodes. All movies at the big screens today are that type of movies, completely vapid action stuff. Even the New Star Trek movies have been turned into that. Is that really what everybody wants?

Eh, I don't know. Lots of people said the same things during the first season of GoT : "enough with the talking already, it's a f-ing medieval fantasy, where are all the swordfights and the monsters?" but in the end it still became a hit. Sometimes the most vocal people are not the best guide to what the audience likes.

Just didn't care for the first two eps....

I do enjoy good shows where people talk, Downtown Abbey, Outlander, etc..... but, I do like a Sci-fi show to have some good "fast paced pew-pew action" in it, because it's a.... Sci-Fi show. For example, loved Stargate:SG1 right from the start.... and the X-files, one can't say that had a lot of "pew-pew action" in it.

There's nothing bad in looking for some pew-pew in sci-fi show, you know. If you want to be bored to death with billions of dialogues and politics, please, watch any procedural show. There're tons of them.

From shows like Expanse people usually expect something more spectacular. I also could barely stand first two episodes, because, man, they ARE boring! I'll give a try to the rest 2 episodes, but if they'll be all about between-colony politics and senseless wandering around, I'll skip this shows for sure.

Firefly is a great example of how good sci-fi show can be, BSG - is not.

Prior to that, I saw the quality was there (camera work / effects / writing) but it wasn't really gelling with me. I liked it, and wanted it to stay because it's space sci-fi on TV, but wasn't loving it.

But by the time episodes 3 and 4 combined I was truly happy with it. Glad it's sticking around.

Same ep 4 hooked me

[So Kallenprice97] I've seen your comments before - you don't apply this sites "4 episode test" as a proper indicator for a show's potential? That way you are not prematurely put off by try too hard Pilot episodes, complex plots, developing characters etc. and can make a more rounded value judgement and if you may warm to it's storytelling. Do you like Science Fiction? Some people just have blinkers on against it, I was shocked that a book club I was going to join excluded sci-fy and just generally dismissed the entire genre!!!

(Spoiler)
From the involvement of the Martian flagship and then initially regarding the character Lopez as sinister to being reduced to tears by his performance I was hooked big time - Show is gonna be one I can't get away from and may fill the BSG void and cure the bitter taste of it's spiritual finale.

Yes, I do like sci fi, as mentioned in my OP. I even enjoyed Killjoys and Dark Matter, with all their flaws. Watched every ep of all iterations of Star Trek.

I don't give all shows the 4 ep test. I can forgive many pilot problems, but in the two episodes of this I watched, I found myself disliking every single main character.

The only one I thought I could like and root for was the runaway daughter and we only saw her for like 40 seconds.

But, based on the comments, here, I'll watch the next two.

Excited! Hopefully they keep up the production quality. Yes there is always criticism and pet peeves about things in scifi not being realistic and breaking laws of physics but this series at least makes a serious effort (the feeling of space being inhospitable place of radiation and emptiness comes across!) while aiming to be visually detailed and stunning. Could this raise to the level of the late BSG? One could only hope.

I read The Expanse fairly recently and I had no idea they were doing a show until I saw the first trailer for it a few weeks after reading the book. Just like the book, the show is strongest when following Holden and his Crew and kind of dull and cheesy when following Miller around on the space station. I like that Holden and is crew seem to really dislike each other while in the book they were pretty tight knit and followed Holden from the beginning. This way allows for more Drama, especially with Amos and his animosity toward everyone but Naomi.

I just wish the show did Holden's announcement more like it was in the book. Much more full of anger and grief right after his ship was blown up. In the show it was mostly just an insurance policy and he wasn't as upset at that point.

Hopefully they also clean up the mystery antagonists for the show because in the book it was very convoluted and kind of uninspired. I was pretty into The Expanse despite it's flaws, but I never bothered to pick up the next book in the series because I sort of lost interest by the end.

My feeling is that it was released like that (letting all four out) was that it was like a four hour pilot. Like sorting out exactly who Holden's crew is (I don't know if Lopez is dead), finally giving us a hint who might be behind everything, and revealing exactly how hard Miller's case will be. But, like especially with Holden's story, it was finally setting them off somewhere with a clear mission (and if you even briefly looked at the books, Holden is the main character throughout).

Yes, I agree about it effectively being a 4 hour pilot. I think those 4 episodes did a good job introducing the characters and the basic 3 entities (that we know about). Though, I'll probably need a refresher before episode 5 airs. I didn't know it was based on books (or if I did, I forgot), so I tend to take that as a good sign,
