Syfy's Defiance Has a Premiere Date

Do you long for the days when Syfy (then SciFi and with 100-percent fewer cooking shows) was full of programs about spaceship battles and PEW PEW lasers and struggling actors with huge prosthetics on their faces? Hardcore science-fiction returns to the network this spring with Defiance, a green-screen bonanza with a video-game tie-in.

And now it has a premiere date. The previously nebulous debut of "April 2013" has been narrowed down to Monday, April 15 at 9pm, and the 12-episode first season will launch with a two-hour premiere episode.

Defiance stars Grant Bowler (the Dick in Liz & Dick) and Julie Benz (Dexter) and is set in the near future, when a collective of seven alien races in search of a new home tries to move into Earth. Naturally humans aren't too keen on the idea, and the new planetmates have difficulty living together peacefully. The show is one prong of a two-headed project; a massively multiplayer online role-playing game will also be released in April with a story that ties in and compliments complements (thank you docspector, sorry, it's Monday) what happens on screen.

Trailer? You bet:

If this is anything like 'Revolution' ......, I won't like it.

"Media Revolution" really??? We'll see...

Eh, I mean, I'll give it a shot. But Fringe was the last sci-fi show that I liked. Hopefully this won't be as horrible as Falling Skies/Terra Nova/Warehouse 13. Ugh, just thinking about those POSs makes me angry.

There's a game element to this? Shame. I'll try to give it three episodes, but if it starts out anything like Terra Nova or Warehouse 13, I won't be able to do that..

woah,woah....stop right there....don't even dare put Warehouse 13 and Terra Nova in same category! Warehouse 13 is awsome!

While I think Defiance game will be disaster, show just might be good to watch. It has some great cast and hopefully it turns out to be watchable. I watched comic-con interview with Defiance cast and creators and it was funny to watch. I'll give it a shot and pray that it is good.

This doesn't look as good as either of the Canadian imports.

been watching some trailers for Defiance game. For me it spells disaster:D,but I will not play game, will watch show. From what I saw is that, you don't have to play the game to understand show. But you might need to watch show to understand game. Game is basically mmo 3rd person shooter. MMO means massive multiplayer online....which I think will be a joke, because these "mmo" and their pvp can only handle 16-20 players, before fps get f-ed up,with all explosins, etc. They say there isn't really single player zone or just pvp zone, that it's open world and anything "can happen at any time". And you create your own character,so of course game and show won't really tie-in,as SyFy and other might advertise it. Will they throw in people's characters they created into show? Yeah right....game is just something they want to cash in on it,so they will be able to support show's cgi work, etc.
I hope that at least SyFy is commited to this show, that it gets 2nd season:D(if it will suck or no,not important atm:D...).

I believe the game will be F2P (Free To Play), so it will likely use the show as a platform to build its player base. As for mmo-pvp, I've never had an issue with 20+ players; Games like PlanetSide 2 have proven that it's possible to do massive 100 vs 100 player battles (PC).

Sorry your experience has been so poor.

hmmm... I'm borderline thinkin this looks cheesier than Falling Skies (which I watch too) but, I think I might give it a shot!
kudos to SciFi...err, correction, SyFy (stupid name changes) for bringing back some actual SciFi in their programming(original any way)

The words "ties in" and "complements" suggest that the game won't be necessary or crucial in watching the show. Plus, TV execs wouldn't be stupid enough to make playing the game necessary... most TV shows have a hard enough time with ratings -- forcing viewers to play a game wouldn't be fruitful. I'll watch -- I wont play.

Everybody "internet freaking" about the game should probably just calm down. I'm fairly certain the show as a standalone will be enjoyable, but if you play the game it will enhance the experience with things that happen off-screen.

Every TV show ever invented has had people that are not on-screen every given moment and I'm sure this will be something along the lines of experiencing the unseen.

Not sure about this. Is playing the game absolutely necessary for enjoying/comprehending the show? Are they intentionally alienating us non-gamers?
Hey Siffy? Go talk to your northern (better) counterparts at Showcase for some lessons on who to do things properly.

I agree. With Continuum and Lost Girl Showcase is now like the good, old Sci-Fi Channel. I wish they would ressurect Stargate franchise.

As for Defiance - we will see. I hope it won't be another family soap like Falling Skies / Terra Nova.

If Japan wasn't able to quite pull off the television show/video game symbiosis with .Hack, I don't why Americans think they can pull it off. If the productions are completely separate I can see that working but if there are elements in the show in which I had to play the game to understand, it will fail like a Sega CD game.

My concern...do I have to play the video game to follow what is going on? If so, well, let's just say my Mondays will likely be jammed and I am trying to remember that Being Human starts soon because I have to set to record it at 11 each night it is on because my DVR has sucked for about three years now (ever since Comcast changed, when I first got it I could set up a series in a particular time slot only, it was how I watch Southland, when it would record at 2 in the morning).

And i guess the last ten episode of Warehouse 13, will be shown along with Defiance to form Powerful Mondays. As with all other new series from SyFy this will diffenetly be given a chance.

Warehouse 13 is so awsome...why are they ending it? I love watching it and it has amazing story, awsome characters...what more could you ask for from a show?? Why they wanna end shows, that people actually like, watch and are fans of it.

I meant this season. I don't hope they are ending Warehouse 13 too, Even though after they ended both Sanctuary and Eureka, you never know what they might do. Sorry for scaring you.

Can I apply? Is the $0.00 an hour part a typo as well? If it's anything other than zero, you got me interested.

I want at least 25%. That's non-negotiable.

Does Siffy also have a cancellation date for Defiance, since a show that's tied into a video game and will be affected by events in the game is sure to crash and burn pretty hard when it turns out nobody plays the game and the show is too expensive to produce on its own?

I do long for those days....if Defiance won't work out, I have suggestion for SyFy:
GET STARGATE BACK ON TV!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.: Even if Defiance works out, GET STARGATE BACK ON TV!!!!!!!! And I don't mean re-runs !
