Taye Diggs joins Grey's Anatomy spin-off

Taye Diggs will star opposite Kate Walsh in ABC's potential spin-off from hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy.

The show will test the waters as a backdoor pilot, an expanded two-hour episode of Grey's slated to air in May. It will center on neonatal surgeon Addison Shepherd (Walsh), a character who has enjoyed a strong following from fans since she was introduced at the end of the hot surgical drama's first season.

It is understood that the backdoor pilot episode will feature Shepherd on the verge of leaving Seattle Grace, a scenario that will be triggered if ABC goes with the spin-off for next season. There were no details on the character Diggs will play.

Grey's creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes is writing the episode and is expected to shepherd the potential series. Meanwhile, Rhimes' other ABC pilot, about female journalists, has been pushed to a summer production start.

Diggs' casting in the Grey spin-off stems from a new talent-holding deal he recently signed with ABC TV Studio, where Grey's Anatomy is based. He starred in two drama series for the studio, Kevin Hill for UPN and Day Break for ABC.

Grey's will survive with or without Addison's character; now don't get me wrong: the moment Kate showed up on the screen, I knew the game was truly *on*, and I'd appreciate (I'm a KW fan) the spin she'd put on the Addison character. Time has proven me correct, and I *love* this character. But this show, more than any I've seen, is truly an ensemble production. This includes the writers. So, I have faith that whomever comes into the show will play as dynamic a role as the writers have stories to present. I don't believe any of them are suicidal, so it'll be good.

And great good luck to KW and Taye Diggs on the new opportunity. I'll certainly be tuning in to see the new show.

ah, and kaanekesan brings up another excellent point. Golden Girls actually had TWO spin offs: Empty Nest, which was very successful, and Golden Palace, which was not. Maybe there is something in the timing that also determines the staying power of a spin off. (Empty Nest was during the Golden Girls run, while Golden Palace and Joey were after their respective shows ended)

i don't like the idea and i think it will ruin the orginial show. not only that i think the spin off will fail and that will ruin one good show because no one will want to try to figure out what is going on.

"empty nest" was a spin-off of "the golden girls"...

"melrose place" was a apin-off of "beverly hills 90210"...

you see sometimes they work..."joey" didn't do well because almost all of the characters were exaggerated...even joey was way more exaggerated than in "friends" and exaggeration made plots stupid and poor...i'm using these terms cause i was a huge friends and joey fan and i believe joey in friends was outstanding and deserved to be one of the best characters in friends.

...anyway my anger to joey doesn't change my opinion...give spin-offs chances!

Isn't "frasier" the biggest example?

Spin offs are so tricky. Sometimes they fail miserably (i.e. Joey), but other times they do so extremely well that it is hard to remember they were spin offs to begin with. For example, Frasier was a spin off of Cheers, Law and Order: SVU is a spin off of Homicide: Life on the Street (not Law and Order, as many believe. Det. Muench is the spin off character from Homicide), and Family Matters is a spin off from Perfect Strangers. Yet it is pretty obvious that these shows are the exception, and not the rule. Although Grey's is in its third season, it's not a good time to be doing this. It'll kill the character for sure. (Though, I'd watch it for Taye Diggs... we went to the same middle school)

Seriously? Seriously! I love Addison and I want her to be with Alex so badly! I hate this idea! HOWEVER apparently there is a clause in Kate's contract that says if the spin off flops, she can come back to GA.

No, No, No...spinoffs don't work, do they? The show is too new, the cast/roles they play are "greyt" together. When I hear that all the cast secretly wished they were the one with the spin-off, I want to say, "Can you spell J-o-e-y?" Friends was a Super Show, not because of one individual, but because of the ensemble. I feel the same way about GA - spinning off is egos spinning out of control - just say "no."

Though things seem to be going great with Meredith and McDreamy right now, something in the back of my head always says....what if. It's that tension of Addison's two love triangles that keeps me coming back (among other things).

i really hope he doesn't leave. h emakes the show. the show can't survive without him.

I'm not totally against the idea but I do think it is waaaaaaaaay to soon. There is just too much that Addison role can do on Gray's. I fear that it would be a let down. I'd hate to see that happen. HEY IF IT AIN'T BROKE.....

I like addison too but I think that greys anatomy needs her character. If she goes your taking away part of the show.

I don't watch Grey's yet but I love Taye Diggs so I would at least give it a shot.

I love Addison/Kate and whilst ultimately this could work out really well I think it is too soon. She has still got a lot of potential story line's on GA.

Not too keen on Taye Diggs being cast at all, I've never thought much of his acting ability and I don't see him in this sort of show nor acting alongside Kate.

I'm unsure about having Addison (Kate Walsh) in her own spinoff. It could go either way, although I personally would think the best person for a spinoff would be Sloan, since he doesn't really fit in the place anyway, but that's just me. And on Taye Diggs getting cast in the pilot, I like that idea. Day Break was a decent show and lets face it, anything on the UPN or WB (Now the CW) is destined to fail unless it has some hot chick in it (Kirsten Bell in Veronica Mars, that hot chick from Gilmore Girls, and Jessica Biel from 7th Heaven)... which is why Kevin Hill was doomed from the start. That's just my opinion...

Not a good idea, I hope they don't push through with it...I love Addison but things are really great over at Grey's right now :(

I don't know why they think there should be a spinoff so quick, especially with how good the show is doing the episode that just ended really kicked ass

I LOVE Addison but I don't think that I can wrap my head around a whole show centered around her. Part of the reason I watch Grey's Anatomy is that there is such a chemistry between all of the characters. What is going to happen if one of them leaves?

Do we really need GA's spin-off? Really?

I like this idea very much, about addison leaving. The only problem i will have is if it is on wednesday or tuesday night. It would be good after greys timeslot, or on friday when the repeat of grey is supposed to be on.

I won't have a single problem with this unless it's on Monday nights at 10 and starts to kill CSI: Miami. I'm more for CSI than Grey's, but I hear good things about the series.

I've not a regular fan of Grey's but the show is pretty good. I don't think that a spinoff of Grey's will be the best thing.

didn't they learn from "Joey" that spin-offs of great shows do not do well?

friends was great but Joey was not

grey's anatomy is great and this new spin-of will probably ruin the show.

I wonder what this will be about.

Addison's one of my favorite characters on the show, but I don't think a spinoff is a good idea this soon, either.

I'm not sure about them doing a spinoff this soon. Why Taye Diggs? His last two shows flopped. There must be someone else.

OMG... This will just ruin the original show...
