Teen Wolf "117" Review: Safe Zone (PHOTO RECAP)

Teen Wolf S04E02: "117"

Where is your underground vault and what do you keep in it? I probably shouldn't print this on the internet, but my underground vault is located under a cell phone kiosk at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. As for what I keep in it, that's between me and the ten thousand terra cotta jerks who stand in silent watch over my valuables, which at this point are mostly just Starburst wrappers to be honest. But still, it's important to have a secret underground vault and to maintain it even if, like, the city decides to build a high school on top of it. You can't just go storing $117 Million in low-yield investments just anywhere, like in a tube sock or in a Swiss bank account. Plus, whenever you need a fresh infusion of bond notes, it gives you an excuse to go hang around high school students without looking like too much of a creep, you know? Guys, I do not have an underground vault, this lie has been eating away at me since the beginning of the paragraph. I have no money or resources or investment savvy and I'm currently typing this thing on a Dell that I found by the creek. [Long sigh.] Sure do wish I had an underground vault.

Friends, "117" was an episode of Teen Wolf that aired this week and it was our first taste of post-Mexico high school life! Not only that, but it showed us tons of new monsters or villains or just b-holes in general, while also making us LOL with the revelation that the Hales have a secret vault under the local high school. Also Derek spent most of the episode as a small boy and Aunt Kate licked all over his face and inside his mouth! I truly hope there will be an episode where Sheriff Stilinski arrests her and she has to go on trial for this and it's all very Notes on a Scandal with the whole town screaming at her in the street. But anyway, "117" was a fun episode, right? All the money got stolen!

Let's talk 'bout it.

Like, I said, we were back in the realm of Beacon Hills! But whoops, we were also BACK IN TIME.

Oh, it was just a young Derek dealing with his werewolf puberty or whatever, and then his teen uncle ran in and started shouting at him about using werewolf voodoo.

Oh, young Peter Hale. Remember when Lydia made out with him? Even when he's a dead teen ghost he can get it. Anyway, Teen Peter Hale gave Teen Derek a Teen Amulet with the same Teen Tattoo that Derek currently has on his back when he does shirtless pull-ups. You know the one. I guess it helps him keep his werewolf urges under control, which, fine. So that's what that was about.

Meanwhile it turned out this was an often-rumored but rarely seen DOUBLE COLD OPEN, as we then cut to a modern day gas station where the employee dude was upset about some lady screaming in the bathroom too much.

AAAAAAH!! Aunt Kate did not look so good here. But whereas before we had reason to believe she could happily shimmy in and out of her were-jaguar face it turned out she was having major troubles with it. And a guy got ate. Typical were-jaguar problems.

Meanwhile the kids arrived back from Mexico and brought Teen Derek to their favorite druid veterinarian.

I love Lydia, but isn't it slightly strange to see her be all involved with the guys without Allison around? From the beginning she's always been the most reluctant participant in everyone's shenanigans (mostly because she's the smartest) but would mostly tag along with Allison. Even as a banshee she never seemed very enthusiastic about being involved, yet here she is, the female front of this particular team. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying it's strange to see how much her context has shifted. Anyway, she decided to stay the night with young Derek, which sort of implied that maybe she had feelings for Derek, but maybe she just didn't want to go home and get hassled by her mom too much, I don't know.

Because Scott definitely got hassled when HE went home:

Oh gosh, Scott's dad is getting so sad. He's sleeping on the couch for some reason. Just get an apartment or something? Why is Mrs. McCall allowing this? Anyway, for an FBI agent in a town with a 85% murder rate, he sure does have a lot of time to whine about his son neglecting him.

This was gross:

Cool experiment, doc! Derek definitely heals. But like, what if he didn't heal and you just sliced open his vein? Do you know any druid magic to fix that? Needless to say not long after this Teen Derek woke up and was NOT happy to be lying on a pile of dog fur.

Haha THIS is how he saw Lydia and Deaton. WHY? I don't know. But if I had seen a couple of ghouls staring at me with demon eyes then I would have reacted in exactly the same way Derek did:

Meanwhile at school we got Stiles explaining to Scott that Malia likes to sneak into his room at night and scratch his hind quarters.

I loved that she makes him be the little spoon. But also I REALLY love that Funny Stiles is definitely back now. As compelling as it was to see him be front-and-center with his mental problems last season, it meant he was nowhere near as Stilesish, you know? But he was very, very funny in this episode. Phew!

Meanwhile guess who didn't know who Abraham Lincoln was?

I mean, first of all, come on. This is hilarious. But I also loved the look on her face when the rest of the class knew the answer and she didn't.

That is basically my reaction to anything anyone ever asks me. But what makes me love Malia so much in this scene is that she WAS studying super hard, even while the teacher was talking. Just furiously trying to catch up to her classmates on basically her entire education. As though she weren't already loveable for literally every other reason, this baffled yet hard-workin' 'tude just made me love her even more. Ugh, Malia's so good.

Meanwhile, bad news for Teen Derek, but also bad news FOR US:

The burnt down haunted house was bulldozed! Man, that was one of my all-time favorite locations, especially when Derek was still living there. It obviously looked way cooler when it was located in the woods of Georgia, but oh well. Now it's gone and Teen Derek was NOT happy about it, especially when some deputies showed up to hassle him.

So obviously Deputy Parrish is dreamy and nice, but his partner seemed like a little bit of a jerk, what do you think? Luckily Sheriff Stilinski FINALLY arrived and served his patented handsome befuddlement.

In this case, why did Teen Derek have the same fingerprints as Derek Hale? It was a mystery that could only be explained via time travel, which was an idea that Sheriff Stilinksi found VERY upsetting.

I always say this, but I love so much that most of the parents know what their kids are up to, supernatural-wise. In this case Sheriff's Stilinski's first instinct was to check with Stiles about what was going on with Teen Derek, and that's just so cute. Same with that earlier scene in the classroom where Lydia straight-up called Kira's dad on the phone in order to reach Scott. Because he knows the kids are probably up to some very important supernatural business, Kira's dad didn't bust Scott and Lydia also probably didn't get in trouble for ditching school. You know? I like that sort of parent-child camaraderie.

Then Scott used an old werewolf trick to get Teen Derek to cooperate: Lying.

Oh, poor Teen Derek. Most of his family got burnt up BAD and also his sister is in Reign

Another thing this show's still figuring out now that Allison's gone is how to get the ladies talkin' about their men. In this case Kira and Lydia were out for a drive for some reason and they awkwardly talked about Scott, and whether Kira's participation in his torture in Mexico was a boner killer for him or not.

Lydia seemed to think Kira still had a shot with Scott, but I don't know. It seemed like he and Allison had a passion that could heat a flame and he was always sneaking over and he put his entire life at risk just to see her, but meanwhile Kira doesn't seem to have that effect on him. But then again now that he's an Alpha maybe his libido went away, who knows how it works with Alphas. As far as I can tell the second your eyes turn red you turn into a super serious warrior and you do NOT have time for good times or the sensual touch of a woman. Good luck, Kira!

This was creepy: They'd ostensibly arrived at the gas station for gas, but Kira realized they had a full tank, so what exactly was Lydia doing bringing them there?

OH RIGHT. Banshee. See, as much as I complained last week about the randomness of Lydia's powers, I do really love how creepy they are when they do work. Like, how not even SHE knows where she's being drawn to or why. There's just something so disconcerting about showing up somewhere for no reason and finding a corpse. Probably the least fun powers of anybody on the show, but creepy has h*ck.

This is probably my favorite teen supernatural drama product placement of all time:

Haha, so good. Hope you liked what you paid for, Samsung!

Okay, I KNOW for a fact you loved this part. In many ways the Miguel scene from Season 1 was the moment people stopped being mean to Teen Wolf and started LOVING it. Mostly because a no-big-deal gay or gay-friendly TV moment just felt so refreshing then, and it was even rarer to see two ostensibly straight characters behaving gay around each other to seduce an actual gay character. So yeah, when Stiles had Derek change shirts in order to seduce Danny it was some next level gratuity that endeared this show to us forever. Hi again, Miguel!

Meanwhile this guy was up to his old tricks:

Oh, Agent McCall. Join a bowling league or something?

So THIS scene was pretty loaded:

Because OH YEAH, Peter Hale is Malia's father and neither of them know it yet! It was funny that he took the time to compliment her good looks and it felt more like vanity than anything else. Unless he recognized her mother's eyes or something? Anyway, I'm dying for these two to start hanging out. They are probably going to be the best together. Just like Peter Hale and v-necks. (The "satan in a v-neck" line was a good one, I didn't even mind the suggested hashtag for that one.)

Anyway, it was time to ask Peter Hale the big questions:

Again, such a funny moment when he initially denied the possibility of creating a werewolf via fingernail scratches only to have it dawn on him mid-zoom-in that Aunt Kate was still alive. So good. Also those two have TONS of old business in that she murdered his family and he murdered her, so this should be a GOOD showdown. (Spoiler alert, it strangely wouldn't be?)

In the tradition of Season 1's famous dinner scene, this one was also very awkward and funny:

Except WHOOPS! The cat was suddenly out of the bag when it came to Derek's murdered family. Guess what? He was not happy about it.

Sterek shippers, does this count as an intimate moment? Is this one single shot going to be stretched into a 3-min slow-mo video and set to a Sam Smith song?  I never know these things.

So then some lady walked out of the bathroom and stole Derek like a thief in the night!

Stiles was very sad and alarmed about it. You had ONE job, Stiles.

Then this happened:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

AHAHAHAHAHA

AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAH

I truly can't. Jeff Davis, you are hilarious.

And that was before THIS happened:

Oh my word. So this whole story was about how Aunt Kate wanted the voodoo medallion or whatever it was that helped Derek control his werewolf impulses. And so she turned him into Teen Derek so that he'd trust her (even though he must have thought he was surely losing his mind) and then she made out with him to get him to open the family vault which was located under the Beacon Hills High School sign. In other words it was the most perfect scheme of all time.

Then Peter Hale showed up and it wasn't even that tense between him and Kate, but he WAS very annoyed that she was trying to use the medallion, considering he admitted he'd bought it at Party City or something and it was just a placebo for Derek to focus his anger on. Or something like that, it was hard to hear anything over that v-neck. Also a few minutes before, a MAJOR brawl had just started going on upstairs:

Malia!! I love that her first instinct is always to run directly at a monster. Personally I don't share that instinct but more power to her, I will laugh every time.

But then whoops, there were TWO Berserkers and suddenly these two very powerful teen heroes were way out-matched and getting thrown all over the place like rag dolls.

At some point Lydia and Stiles showed up with a bat but they wisely side-stepped the Berserker drama and went looking for the vault instead. Fair enough! Kira had other ideas though:

But whoops! Everybody knows that the rotten bones of an animal carcass are stronger than a samurai sword, so despite her bravery Kira was quickly lying on the concrete like the other two.

Ugh, Berserkers. They look awesome but just imagine the stench. Also, are they humans? Just very strong guys who work out at Gold's Gym and dabble in taxidermy? Or are they supernatural? Fill me in, show.

Whatever the case, they suddenly got their asses handed to them by a confused teenage boy:

It was Derek! But how weird was it when he kept morphing between young and old? All the middle versions made him look like a total goon. Anyway, I guess anger at Berserkers was the one thing that could bring Derek back to his modern day face, and it worked!

Welcome back, Mature Derek! Why are your eyes yellow? Why is it Season 4 and I still have no idea why anybody's eyes are any color? Do all the wolves have different rules? You know what, doesn't matter. Thrill me with your tantalizing mysteries, Teen Wolf.

Okay, so then FINALLY Peter Hale lost his temper at his former nemesis:

But then WHOOPS! Flash grenade! Someone flashed these critters so good and then walked into the vault in black boots and here's the shocking twist: It WASN'T Chris Argent. I was genuinely shocked, guys, I had been sitting there all smugly going "Well, here comes Chris Argent," but then it WASN'T Chris Argent? We didn't see his face, but I feel like we would have seen his face if he had been Chris Argent.

Anyway, the mysterious villain stole a briefcase out of the vault and Peter Hale didn't appreciate it one bit.

Because guess what was in the briefcase? Just $117 MILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS worth of savings bonds. Dang, the Hales are rich! Or WERE rich! Now they have to live in rusty lofts and abandoned subway stations and burnt down haunted houses out of necessity and not just because they're trendsetters. Sorry, Peter Hale. Go get that money back!

"117" set up a bunch of new dynamics for this story and managed to have a lot of fun along the way. Stiles is hilarious again, Derek's back, the parents are back, and Malia continues to amuse and amaze. No lacrosse quite yet, but what are we, gluttons? We gotta pace ourselves on Teen Wolf's delights or else we'll start looking like the spaghetti eater in Se7en. Yeah, I liked this episode.

OK BYE GUYS

QUESTIONS

... Is Kate controlling the Berserkers? Is the mysterious vault robber controlling Kate?

... Why hasn't Stiles' dad paid his Eichen House bill yet?

... What's Kira's mom up to? What's Scott's mom up to? Or Lydia's mom? Did they have a book club meeting?

... Why do the Hales keep bird skeletons in their secret underground vault?

ugh I so wished they would keep young Derek around for a little longer, but good to have Mature Derek back. Both are equally hot so tbh i'm not even mad. I've always wanted Derek and Lydia to happen, but Young Derek and Lydia opened up whole opportunities I hadn't even seen before.

I also loved the point you made about Kira and Scott. I've never been they're number one fan and now I see why; Scott just isn't as into her as he was into Allison. With good reason. Kira is kind of a side-hoe at this point, I hope Jeff Davis makes her more likeable/interesting this season.

Loving Season 4 so far, even though there's an Isaac-shaped hole in my heart.

So Tyler is back and I'm ecstatic. Based on the assassin premise of this season I'm gonna assume the mysterious "Benefactor" is going to be using Hale money to hire people to murder all the supernaturals, which kinda sucks. There seems to be a money theme going on too, which makes sense based on the series teaser. Like Stiles needs money, now the Hales have no money, I'm sure Scott and Melissa will have no money soon enough. Yet my main concern is what happened to Derek's beautiful blue eyes, he still killed Paige, that was addressed. Why are his eyes yellow and not blue? Grrrr. But anyways so glad Peter is around, him and Malia will be awesome together. I actually kinda want Kate and Peter to work together, I always thought they would be funny to see interact long term. Like if they had to not kill each other and plan to defeat the big bad of the season, it would be very entertaining, I foresee a lot of smartass comments

So I was just reading back over this. Why is price saying he doesn't know why werewolf eyes are the color they are. I thought that was solved.

I think he was just confused as to why Derek's eyes had reverted to yellow. Based on the shows explanation they should still be blue but they aren't. Thus, there must be more to the mythology or loopholes to it at least.

Werewolf default eye color is yellow.

If they kill an innocent then their eyes shift to blue (Derek killed Paige, Peter lots of people, Jackson all those people during the Kanima time, Malia killed her family).

Alpha eyes are Red.

Anyone else notice that on the police record Derek's eye colour was shown as brown. Hoechlin/Derek's eyes are green.

Isn't the eye colour just alpha, beta or omega? Yellow would mean Derek stepped up to now be a beta because he won the fight protecting Scott and pals. Someone on here says it's blue if you've killed an innocent but I don't know if it works that way, can't remember if it's been said or not in the show. Although Scott always had yellow eyes so that's confusing me a bit! Maybe Derek has reverted back to being an innocent and just looks older who knows. Is anyone going to ask how on earth Kate suddenly got the magical powers to turn Derek into a teenager? I don't like that it's not been explained!

yah the show clarified in season 3A, Peter explained it in that big flashback episode that paralleled Derek and Deucalion's backstory, I think it was like episode 7/8 or something. It was yellow as the average colour, the "ice cold blue" if you had killed someone, and the intense fiery red if you were an alpha because when you're an alpha your aura or spark or whatever that makes you a supernatural burns brighter or something.

Yes I thought maybe his evolving had something to do with it, but I wasn't sure, cause they definitely made it seem like Kate was behind it the whole season. Maybe that will be explained next season but I doubt it. I love Teen Wolf, but this season had a few holes.

Yah, I'm not even sure the finale clarified that one. I don't know if you've watched it yet and I don't want to spoil anything. But I don't know if what happens in the end is actually related to that or not.

Yeh, I seen the finale, it didn't clarify it, all it seemed to say was that she made him young but how? Don't know if it was to do with him evolving (and you may have meant that with your comment)!!

can I just ask, are you a sterek shipper or not? because you keep makinig the 'my bae' picture with Stiles refering to Derek, but idk it kind of seems like you aren't ( because of the mini paragraph you made about yougue!derek slamming stiles againt the door- the anwser, btw, is no.) So idk. I'm just really curious now.

Yup, this was definitely a good episode (except for lol, secret passageway under the school. who doesn't love secret passageways? :P) but i feel you left out something very important- Derek controls his werewolf-ism with anger.

I mean ok, i guess that would explain the constant brooding and sour-wolf-ness (ehehe) but like, thanks TW for never mentioning that up to this point. And how exactly do you control anger? Because I'm pretty sure the ghost from sueprnatural would disagree with this. I hope they do something about this. And I mean, If Derek stopped relying on anger so much, would he be less of a sour-wolf? OK tbh a part of me is kind of terrified of that happening and no my sour wolf no, but it would really be so much better for him.

So idk. I just feel like that particular part of '117' needed to be addressed. Ans oh look, I just addressed it :P

They did tell us. It was back in Season 2 when he was trying to keep Isaac, Boyd, and Erica under control during their first full moon. He told Isaac that anger was his anchor.

Haha yah, I think Kate may be his anchor, like his anger anchor lol. But I do think he has started to distance himself from his anger to a fair degree. He did mention to Scott that Scott had taught him a lot too about control, because Scott didn't need anger to control it and neither did Isaac. I think now he mostly is just mopey because his life has basically sucked. Everyone he loves dies or betrays him in a big way, like trying to kill his only friends (Kate, Peter, Jennifer, even Lydia with the bringing Peter back thing, Scott kinda screwed with him a lot in season 2 too).

Yesss, we're back! As fun as last week's Mexico vacación was, it just didn't feel like the Teen Wolf we know and love. And it was hard to get past the giant gaping holes in my heart where Allison and Isaac used to be-- but this episode patched those holes up with new characters!

I'm definitely feeling this Malia person. I love that the show is fully embracing the fact that she was legit raised by wolves and probably is not very normal. Never get normal, Malia.

Also fun: Jailbait Derek! Darn, I was hoping he would stick around for another episode or two because it was so weird, and also had potential for tons more scenes where little Derek is introduced to big Derek's honestly pretty crappy life. Like, if older you time traveled back to meet teen you but instead of a nice "It gets better" message it was more like a dire warning?

Between Sheriff Stilinki's clearly impending bankruptcy and Coach's health care tirade last season, I really enjoy when this show is rooted in the real world. Like, of course it's probably very costly to live in a supernatural demon town where you're getting possessed and speared in the chest on a regular basis! Also the whole "we're going camping" cover story- a classic.

As always, the review is funny and just makes the episode far more interesting! As for the questions... I don't think Kate is controlling the Berserkers. She can't even control her own transformation -.- Sheriff didn't pay the bill because... he didn't want to? I seriously don't know and don't care. The moms definitely went to do some shopping together since you know, their kids are all supernatural creatures of some sort. And the bird bones may be some weird Hales fetish or something. Again, I don't know and I don't care. Ok now, I'm a Kira fan all the way but can she be like a little more interesting?? I mean, c'mon, kitsune powers? On the other hand, maybe she just don't really know how to control them yet. The girl talk scene with Lydia? Loved it. More of these plz?? And Malia. Oh Malia. I just love her character so much. She's soooo cute with Stiles. I ship them so hard (no offense to Stydia shippers tho). And grown-up Derek!! Hope he recovered his memories, hate it when a character loses memory -.- *Waiting for ep 3*

I couldn't stop laughing at Malia with that highlighter in her mouth. Watching Peter run from the Berserker was pretty funny also. But what I want to know is how did teen Derek manage to take on two Bersekers?

Because Derek is awesome lol. Although Scott is an alpha he isn't really a trained fighter, neither is Malia, and Kira learned all her ass kickery from instinct, they aren't really trained fighters like Derek. But, I don't know when he turned back into adult Derek they seemed scared of him. I want to know more about the Hales as guardians of Beacon Hills, I'm wondering if that makes Derek something more than your average werewolf. Also I want to know more about this super healing ability, what does it all mean and is it still there now that he is an adult again?

well they've said this season would be about the people being conflicted over killing the supernaturals on a hit list from the Benefactor (maybe?), so the Scott's leaky roof was a sign of their financial troubles, and from all of Stiles' medical bills from s3b, they'll be strapped for cash as well and will have to consider killing to take care of their family.

I really liked the exchange between Peter and Malia "I bet they wish you stayed dead." fantastic.

does winking activate Kira's powers or something? she did it pretty hard in the beginning of last week's episode too lol

this looks like they're trying to fly or some kind of circus act, I laughed at it.

To my ear, grammatically passable but almost ludicrous American accent, which—the actor's fluency aside—I considered to be part of the joke. In the same way that I love the idea of anyone anywhere actually having the birth name Miguel Stilinski. (I know it doesn't necessarily have to be Stilinski.)

He doesn't know yet does he. I thought Lydia refused to tell him. But now I can't remember, did she end up telling him so she would help Scott go into Stiles' mind in 3B, or did she not have the chance to tell him before she was kidnapped. I thought she hadn't told him yet and that was why he was so worried when her nose started bleeding and it seemed like she might die or something.

Its a second notice so it likely means he's strap for cash.

Scott's mom at work, Lydia's has she ever been a factor Kira doing fox things.

“They didn’t just wear them, they became them. You know a couple of years ago a family came to us for help with their son. This group of teenagers, they were doing all sorts of rituals with animal skins. Somehow they tapped into it. But with berserkers, the humans they don’t last that long, they’re not tempered by the moon.”
“She tore them apart. Eventually I had to tell the family their son was gone took three of us to take him down almost every bullet we had and when it was over I felt no remorse…” – Chris Argent, 3×20

The berserkers are people...supernatural? Yes they were people that killed an animal and wore their bones and skin, this Gabe them superior strength of the animal and makes the very deadly. I'm not to sure but I swear remembering chris argent mentioning a run in with a berserker a while back not to sure though but that's the knowledge I know of berserkers ✌

I thought Peter knew that Malia was his daughter? She's the one who doesn't know, but Peter definitely knows he has a daughter.

Also, why are Peter's eyes blue? I thought he had become an Alpha again at the end of last season?

The eyes are blue when the werewolf kills a human, I believe.
They are yellow otherwise, and of course red if you're an Alpha.

Peter just declared that he was an alpha. It's his magical world of make-believe where lines like "Let's FIGHT!" sound cool. He's not an actual alpha as far as we know... just a crazy man with fangs.

Unless there's going to be a massive twist.

about the color of wolves eyes... they mention it in season 3A! Yellow is for a wolf who never killed an innocent, blue is for a wolf who killed someone and red is for, well I hope you know what Red stand for.

We've received this information via Peter though and Peter is... unreliable.

And by unreliable I mean psychotic, manipulative and evil.

Maybe he spoke the truth, or the truth as far as he knows it, or maybe he was simplifying things. Or maybe he was just talking rubbish. But as the entire episode he said it in was lampshaded as being about unreliable narrators, you've got to question everything in it.

Also, it's been stated (with Jackson=Kanima etc.) that state of mind has a lot to do with these sort of things. Jackson became the Kanima because he had unresolved issues. So it's entirely possible that the blue eyes things is psychosomatic in some way. Like you think you're evil or tainted and so your eyes turn blue. I imagine it'll be explained in greater detail regarding Derek.

I like the psychosomatic idea, but if that were the case I think Derek would still have blue eyes. That boy is a walking ball of angst and guilt.

Could be a good theory... but when Jackson died he came back as a blue eyes werewolf... I dont think he had the time to think about if he was evil or not... or maybe he died thinking he was evil...Plus Jen told Derek that she knew what was the true color of his eyes because she knew what he did to Paige, that's the reason why she was alive... again she was a psycho but she also was an emissary like Deaton.

As Peter continued to draw conclusions this episode based on the principles of his previously described eye color distribution, I think Peter thinks he's telling the truth. He probably is, to a certain extent, but I think part of what Teen Wolf is doing this season is undermining the reliability of authority figures. Peter and Derek have been the go-to wolf experts. Deaton (and Argent, to a lesser extent) has been the narratively useful source of all supernatural knowledge. More and more I think they're being questioned, or challenged.

Is Kate controlling the Berserkers? Is the mysterious vault robber controlling Kate? It certainly looks like Kate is controlling the Berserkers. They were in her lair and they showed up in Beacon Hills at the same time she did, so my best guess is yes. I don't know if the MVR is controlling Kate, but I do think MVR had a hand in convincing Kate she needed to get into that vault for that triskalion (horrible spelling, I know, sorry)

... Why hasn't Stiles' dad paid his Eichen House bill yet? Do you know what the economy is like out there? Especially for a sheriff who keeps getting fired and rehired, or at least keeps having investigations against him? Sheriffs don't make THAT much money and the looney bin...excuse me, psychiatric hospital is expensive! Although everyone should get at least a partial refund seeing what kind of orderlies they let run the place. Maybe Stiles needs to get a part-time job to help his dad out. That would be typical of one-parent families.

... What's Kira's mom up to? What's Scott's mom up to? Or Lydia's mom? Did they have a book club meeting? They're all off being totally awesome somewhere. Actually, I don't know about Kira's mom, but Scott's mom was working the night shift (and probably asleep during the day) and Lydia's mom is a teacher at the school now, but we got Kira's dad's history class in this episode. What does Kira's mom do?

... Why do the Hales keep bird skeletons in their secret underground vault? Doesn't everybody?

It has to be Peter. I hate him, but I like hating him. Kate just plain creeps me out at the moment. Plus, Peter's got more to him as a bad guy. We saw in Visionary that he was always a bit twisted, it wasn't just the fire that made him that way, whereas Kate's pretty simple by comparison.

Couple of questions:
- how long was Stiles at Eichen house, that his father is now being crippled by the bills? Plus, he broke out of there and it's not like they were aware he was possessed. On the surface, they lost a patient, AND you're charging his father for his time there?!!

- they're very inconsistent with Scott's powers. Why was he not fully wolfing out for that fight? And I'm supposed to believe Derek, a Beta, fought off the Berserkers with his man-pain rage while Scott, an alpha, was easily subdued? Also, no one was hurt, they didn't get up to help Derek, because.....?

- Teen Derek is still incompetent. He didn't notice Kate had aged 10 years older than him? Also, turning young made him not-murder his teen "girlfriend"?

- I thought Peter did know who Malia was. Didn't Lydia give him her name in return for his help getting Stiles back from inside his brain, or something?

"Also, turning young made him not-murder his teen "girlfriend"?"

I don't think so. Initially young Derek still had blue eyes, Peter even commented on it, asking specifically what colour his eyes were and stating it was after he killed Paige, and around the time he met Kate. So he definitely still killed her, I just don't know why his eyes are yellow all of a sudden

I have to admit, I actually liked this episode a lot better after reading Price's recap. I think MTV interrupts the flow of the show too much and I can't get really into the show because of that. Although, it does usually take a few episodes for me to get completely sucked in each season.

BTW, am I wrong, or does Derek (the grown-up version) always wait to show up until the 2nd episode of each season?

I agree I want Kira to become more awesome, her lightening ability was one of the most interesting things and they have abandoned that completely it seems. Also if she remains a desperate fangirl for Scott's attention she is gonna become really annoying. I hated that about the first season, Scott's irritating and obsessive infatuation with Allison, it was to mooney and not a fun plot. I liked that they settled the relationship stuff to a large extant last season, everything seemed to be moving nicely, now it is a turning into a little bit of an issue. Though to be honest I never watch the show for Scott, I find his character a little inconsistent and a tad annoying, I watch for everyone else. So if the show continues the annoying relationship crap I will just suffer through it.

I agree. I was pretty excited they were delving into the Kitsune mythology last season, and the first few times she was playing with her electric powers were cool. But, now she just uses weapons, which to be honest she doesn't look all that great using, instead of honing in on her animalistic fox powers and lighting.

Lydia told Peter about Malia during the going into Stiles mind to get him away from nogitusine. Derek killed Paige an innocent so his eyes went from amber to blue, Peter killed a lot of innocent people blue eyes, Amber if you haven't killed an innocent person (non-supernatural). great episode and peter's expressions are great as usual.

I know it was part of Lydia's agreement with Peter that she would give up the identity of his kid, but (if I recall correctly) she whispered it in his ear, unaudible to the viewer. I think the show has a little leeway about whether or not she told him the truth. Based on his needling introduction to Malia in this episode, I'm inclined to think she did. I'm more surprised that he hasn't yet done more with the information.

I've never particularly been a fan of poorly defined reasons for things like eye color. ("Innocent" is far to subjective for such a binary, and I'm not sure whether or not it has anything to do with who is or is not supernatural.) Either way, Derek's change in eye color is strange. How can you undo something like that?

Jul 02, 2014
Peter has always been more of a wait and see until it benefits him. I have no doubt that's he waiting until it benefits him and his quest for power to have Malia know. Plus his sister did remove the memory, he may be trying to figure out who the mother is/was.

Innocent as in non-supernatural. Derek killed Paige because the bite was killing her and she asked him, and that's when his eyes turned blue. Also Peter killed a lot of innocent people that were not supernatural in the first season.

It was actually pretty clear, to me at least, that Lydia whispered Malia into Peter's ear, so I would say he does know who she is, but is holding onto the information for a time when it will be useful for him. Or else the pack is forcing him to be silent, but I doubt they have anything on him that would work like that.

This was the Teen Wolf episode I expect, strange, scary, funny and generally bizarre, but in a good way.

I'm glad the Mexico side trip wasn't extended, though I would still like to know how they crossed the border while underage and without guardians. Malia wouldn't necessarily have any issues if she changed shape, but the other guys would've been stopped from even going into Mexico, much less getting back out.

I loved Deaton's confusion about Derek's condition, that had to be a new one to him. And the Sheriff's response was classic. Though he really should've been more angry once he found out where they'd been "camping"; maybe Stiles being grounded to at least the county. :D

I think they should let Kira's father in on Malia's issues, him calling on her was so not fair to her. She really should be going to Special Ed classes, not the regular classes. That "deer in the headlights" look of hers was hysterical, but at least she's working really hard to catch up on what she's missed. And I really like how she reacts to antagonists, very animalistic and pack oriented.

Stiles is going to have to talk to Malia about their nightly activities and place some boundaries on their relationship. She doesn't really understand human interactions yet, but I'm sure she'll learn quickly enough if he explains it to her.

The Scott and Stiles banter is back...yayyy!!!!

Okay Jeff, why hasn't Scott started showing more Alpha strength while fighting? I mean Derek as a teenage beta did better than Scott, Malia or Kira combined, and even better than Derek ever did as an adult. What is up with that???!!!!

Must have more Braeden!

Peter's back!!! And he's running away so fast he forgot his daughter, lol! I loved every interaction he had, he was so much fun! I can't wait until he and Kate really have it out, that will be EPIC!!!!

I totally have the same question. When she first showed up and saved Isaac I was all like yah she seems awesome and mysterious, leaving that bruise on the girls arm I thought she was some kinda supernatural. Than I thought she died and I was a little sad but got over it. Than when she came back it kinda didn't make sense to me or impress me that she was a mercenary, especially that Deucalion hired her. I'm not really interested in her yet, and something about her makes me kinda wary. I'm a little worried she will end up with Derek and than turn on everyone and try to kill them for money, since this season is about assassins killing supernaturals and she is a mercenary. First episode she admitted if the price was right she would kill Scott. This seems like another doomed Derek relationship, I saw Jennifer coming the first episode she was in and now it seems like Braedon is the replacement. However, I would be a little disappointed. I thought I read an interview where Jeff said Derek would get a girlfriend this season that wasn't psychotic.

Yeah, I agree for the most part.

My thing is maybe more to do with the actress, I guess. I'm not really feeling her? She's like trying TOO hard to be badass and cool? On paper she seems kinda interesting, and I'm all about a kickass female mercenary, but she way she delivers her lines isn't doing it for me. . .

But yeah, her job seems cool, but her plot is a little wishy washy. . .

O, how I love this show! The teen angst, the monsters, the ridiculousness, everything is amazing about it. I do miss the creep factor from last season.
I'm glad to see more of funny Stiles, but it doesn't feel nearly as dark and dangerous. And I really liked dark and creepy, more mature, Teen Wolf.
This episode did peak my curiosity though: what's up with the Berserkers, who robed the Hales. There were a lot of pretty ridiculous aspect to this episode. Most of all teenage Derek, for which no explanation was given whatsoever. Kate's elaborate scheme that involved making out with a teenager. And the extreme anticlimax of finding out what was in the fault.
I though for sure it would be some mystical weapon of doom, but instead: bonds. Okay, I'd be pretty pissed if someone robbed me of 117 million dollars, but I don't see how it would in any way be dangerous or deserving of a story lead.
I wonder when the real threat of the season is revealed. The Berserkers are a little creepy, but someone is definitely controlling them.

Of course the secret underground vault was too much for me. At this point i was like seriously?? SERIOUSLY?!?!?? But yeah it's a minor detail, or not i actually don't care.
"Oh, poor Teen Derek. Most of his family got burnt up BAD and also his sister is in Reign." this killed me. I will never not laugh about jokes of Adelaide being in Reign... i mean Cora being in South America.
Last week i said i was starting to like Malia a lot even if i didn't really like her in season 3B but now i know it's real, i absolutely love her. They shouldn't have put her in the same year as Scott, Stiles or Kira (senior or junior i guess?) because she missed like seven years of school let's get real with this. Allison was a year below the one she should be because her family moved a lot (she was one year older than everyone) then i guess Malia should be at least one year below because she missed a lot. As much as i love Derek being back to his real age i must admit teen Derek was a cutie! Like a puppy sad and confused and also a bit charming! and making out with Kate?!?!?! TF? i mean was Kate like that when he met her back in those days? because why wouldn't he realize that Kate was a grown up woman now?

So questions!
... Is Kate controlling the Berserkers? Is the mysterious vault robber controlling Kate? IDK!!! I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT TEEN WOLF HAVING BERSERKERS!
... Why hasn't Stiles' dad paid his Eichen House bill yet? I guess Eichen House is a pretty expensive place to put your kid in to and maybe Sheriff's salary it's not enough
... What's Kira's mom up to? What's Scott's mom up to? Or Lydia's mom? Did they have a book club meeting? they should i would watch that
... Why do the Hales keep bird skeletons in their secret underground vault? because it's time to admit this is a really weird family with really weird stuff and really weird past.

I know they were in school "2 months" ago for 3B and they are still in school now, so they should be in their senior year next season right? Which makes me a little worried about what they will do when it's time to graduate. Are they gonna pull a TVD and create a ridiculous, semi local college/university?

Yeah, I definitely heard "Bearer Bones" when Peter said what was stolen in the vault. And when he says there was 117 of them, I was like, "That bag isn't nearly big enough...?" In my defense, he did have Talia's fingernails, it wouldn't shock me if her bones were in the vault too.

Right now I really don't understand how Kate, the Berserkers and the thief would connect one to the other. Seeing as the heist went, the guess is that Kate was manipulated?

About Lydia: I know that she's being pushed front line because Allison's gone and the audience need some familiar face and not only the new girls. Still I think that storywise it could make sense: as Lydia never wanted to be part of the action, never tried to find a way to develop her powers, in the end she wasn't able to save Allison! But her instincts were telling her the truth about the Nogitsune from the beginning!
Being on the sideline didn't do any good and it's time for her to have some action!

Malia is just a revelation! And I love this show for all the little details, like Price said, the fact that she's working so hard to catch up! Usually tv shows don't bother in building characters like TW do!

But then again now that he's an Alpha maybe his libido went away, who knows how it works with Alphas
I realize you're being sarcastic, but the twins hormones were all over the place...

Most likely Scott is simply taking a break due to his ex-girlfriend dying.

Because OH YEAH, Peter Hale is Malia's father and neither of them know it yet! It was funny that he took the time to compliment her good looks and it felt more like vanity than anything else. Unless he recognized her mother's eyes or something?
Wait - Does Peter even have any idea who Malia's mother is? Since he didn't know he had a kid and Talia wiped his mind, I thought he has 0 knowledge of who the mother is. (Otherwise he could just use those 117 million dollars to hire a PI)

My guess is that probably the relationship itself was a big no no (incest perhaps? Maybe rape?)

Also, I didn't think about this until I read Price's recap, but why did Derek trust Scott? Just cause he was an alpha?
Let's see, your family is gone possibly dead, one of them was an alpha (regardless of who he thought it was at the time), Alpha powers are transferred when you kill the previous one, there's a new alpha in town...

Yeah... Let's totally trust him cause there's no way there's even the slightest chance he killed my family...

Lydia told Peter that Malia was his kid in #10(?) episode of 3B, in return for his help when Scott and Lydia went into NStiles' mind. Her whisper of "Malia" in Peter's ear started the whole wrapped Stiles exodus.

It was in the episode when Stiles was disgorged from the Nogitsune. Lydia whispered Malia's name in Peter's ear, but the scene showed that NStiles heard it. It happened right after Lydia and Scott woke up from their "visit" in Stiles' mind. I just can't remember which episode number it was.

I think Derek trusting Scott was because he instinctively knew him as pack. We've seen how the alpha can bring out things in betas - Peter trying to make Scott kill his friends, Derek got Isaac under control when he first changed in the Sheriff's department. Scott calling Isaac out of his twin-beating rage. It's in keeping with the show that the sound of Scott could appeal to something deeper in Derek's psyche and cut through all of Kate's nonsense.

This might be ridiculous, but part of me also thought that Derek would trust any alpha because at this point I think he still believed his mom was alive and he might not be too worried about other alphas because they all really respected his mother and he could more or less trust that they wouldn't screw with him. Also Scott was the guy that saved him from that crypt thing in Mexico. As a side note, how did they get Derek across the border, I doubt he had his passport on him and I really doubt they would have accepted it.
What I didn't get was why Derek wouldn't have just howled to try and locate his family. Maybe he did it off screen, but why not give it a shot, that is the way they find each other after all.

Actually no. Peter didn't get Scott to trust him, he was practically mind controlling him. That's completely different.

If that was the case here, I'd have little trouble with it.

But if you watch again, you'll note that Scott simply showed the red eyes and so Derek trusted him cause he is a fellow wolf.

While I can understand that working with outsiders like Malia it's totally weird with Derek

I didn't mean that Scott trusted Peter... just that the alpha can access a part of the Beta that is... subconscious? Therefore Scott could reach a part of Derek that knew that he was trustworthy and his alpha. Sorry I may not have phrased it clearly. Whereas Peter connected with Scott's inner wolf and tried to draw out the anger qualities.

Moms? They are on a need to do basis. I think Teen Wolf is big on father figure. I just feel that they give more emphasis on how the father-child relationship moves rather than with the moms, except off course for Scott's. And the skeleton birds? Their first actual kill maybe?

Malia is getting very fast on the adorable-meter. I think we have a she-Stiles in her. She really portrayed the innocent (not all the time) and compulsive character. That scene in the history class was so hilarious and her face was just gold. Same with the dinner scene. Stiles making bff with teen Derek was hilarious. And teen Derek speaking in spanish was fun. thanks god this show finally goes back to the happier times.

I hate the tomb like bodega on the school's ground. seems a little off. I was expecting the Hale house underground for the buried treasure's location.

For me this was a good episode. Kudos to teen Derek. I'm impressed on how he capture the older Derek's expressions. Good casting. It would be fun if Derek has a problem shifting from time to time to his younger self.

I don't think the fact that Scott and Kira's relationship is different from S1's eager puppy love between Scott and Allison means he doesn't have real feelings for her, and I don't think it's fair to compare them. S1 and S4 Scott are very different people, and once again, his first love just died. That means he probably has giant emotional issues right now, probably feels guilty about starting to move on just before her death, and I don't see him throwing himself head first in a relationship. Kira is also much shyer and more awkward and introverted than Allison. I think the show is taking it slow to show us that these characters have been hurt and have a lot to get back from, but they're going to get there. It's not first love anymore, so of course it's going to be different. It doesn't mean they cant be passionate about each other.

I loved Allison, but I'm still rooting for Kira. Seems like not everybody likes her but personally I find her really likable.

I agree with everything you said. I was not a fan of the puppy love stuff from season 1. Though I liked Kira when she was first introduced this has been a little annoying. It seems like she is all puppy love, while Scott is as you pointed out recovering. I just don't want Kira to become solely a love interest, or do stupid things just to get Scott's attention. I get that she's awkward and that is cute, but they need to find a balance between cute awkward and just embarrassing to watch awkward.

I would add that them being together so soon would cause some friction in the audience that doesn't feel comfortable with Kira. I think that TW is so good when it takes things slowly and the characters' feeling grow as the audience's

Obviously the bird skeletons were 'Baby's first kill' as a bb!werechild.

Also, I'm certain the vault robber was sneaky Deaton who was hoping Kate would have stolen Derek away from the vet clinic. How else could Derek have escaped if it wasn't open for someone to break in, too?

Question: How did Scott not know that Derek has been sleeping with Kate?

I thought this was common knowledge.

Remember last season, during the hospital evacuation Stiles said to Derek:
"When your psychotic mass murdering girlfriend, the second one you dated, by the way, has gotten my dad somewhere tied up. . ."

Scott was standing right there next to them. There's no way this was news to him.

And when they were told about Paige, didn't they think it was Kate who broke Derek?

I have a question. In last season's finale, Kate's face was blue when she turned into a werejaguar. How come her face wasn't blue in this episode?

Malia was great, I love her as the new character. I also loved the interactions between Teen Derek and Stiles. So funny, lol.

Is it just me or these past 2 episodes of Teen Wolf was kinda let down? I mean, last season was sooooo good, especially the Kitsune plot, that I kinda have high expectation from Teen Wolf now.

About kate maybe she isnt doing a full transformation. Like when scott fights. Only for major fights does he go full human wolf (beard face mutation) and derek does it most times. Im guessing kate is just too much of a newbie.

Teenwolf has really progressed. I started watching it as a filler tv shows until my main ones returned. Season 3 nearly every episode was great therefore anything less feels well boring and slow. i thought episode 1 was good. Episode 2 not so much. Whats worse is that we are now 2 episodes into a 12 or 13 ep season.

I agree that the episodes were slightly slow, but they also were a great set up for what's about to happen!

My guess for the first answer: Better budget. The blue was horribly looking (still better than the Darach... but not by much)

I'm guessing since this season has a yellow undertone, they changed it.

And as for your last one, I agree that it's a let down.
Though I wasn't a fan of 3b either.

mate there are only 3 eye colors for wolfs.
red=Alpha
Golden Yellow=beta
Blue=Taken an innocent life

No eye colour change from an omega. As they are still a beta but by right an omega by pack law.

Yeah, Omega means you don't have a pack. It's not an actual physical change.
