The 2011-2012 End-of-Season Rankings Are In: Here's How Every Show Fared

It's the end of the TV season, which means a gluttony of year-end lists! But to rich execs in the network business, this list of the top-performing shows of the 2011-2012 season released by Nielsen is the only one that matters. These rankings are based on the advertiser-coveted 18-49 age demographic, which largely determines what's placed on Thursdays at 9pm and what's relegated to Fridays to die a slow death.

A couple interesting notes before we show you the list:

– CBS's Rob was the season's highest-rated canceled show (#22). Also shocking: Rob was #22?!?!?!?!?!?!?

– For as big of a disappointment as Terra Nova was, it still finished 24th. Alcatraz was in a similar boat; that show placed 30th. But remember, these are average ratings, and both series slid in a big way after huge debuts.

Work It beat Community. Grumble grumble. Though that's a bit misleading because curiosity drew audiences to Work It for the few episodes that made it to the air.

– As far as overall network performance goes, Fox took first in the season for the 18-49 demo, followed by CBS, NBC, and ABC. Oh and The CW was way, way, way behind them all.

I can't believe this list. There is no way in heck that the pathetic 30rock would be in the top 100. Why are you showing us half a list? How about total viewers, not the 18-49 demographic.

I think there is way too much TV in this world, and this is just a small sampling...

i think those who download illegally are moast likely to fall into the 18-49 demographic. and you can find the stats online for most torrented shows in the same way you can movies i'd imagine. that of course doesn't include other forms of downloading. i guess it's possible that 10s of thousands is a drop in the bucket compared to actually ratings but i've seen them that high for a single torrented episode just after release.

I don't understand networks wanting this demographic. Most of the them have no money, the big money is in the hands of older people, say 35-55. Anyway, I LOVE Supernatural, in fact my favorite show on TV, but most of the CW line up is bad except for that show and it deserves to be in the basement.

maybe the cw will finially get it...other than reality (which i can not comment on because i will not watch) pretty faces with little talent and mean boys and girls are maybe not as sellable as they thought. hard to believe. but a good thing. most of the reallt good showa are on cable...Justifies,Burn Notice,Closer, amer horror, suites, fallen skyies,dr who, killing mad men...need i say more!

140. CW Supernatural .... O.o my God!! Supernatural is so awesome, won PCAwards in a double great night, like 8 awardsor more during the present (over) season ... Supernatural is a great serie--!! deserves better.

It's quite obvious that most everyone's comments are in disagreement with the list. Really, there are some very good to excellent shows that have been beaten out by some very bad and overrated shows, like Modern Family for instance. In my opinion, it is not deserving of being the #1 comedy show on the air. The Big Bang Theory is one of many shows a million times funnier than Modern Family. And at the other end of the spectrum is: Grimm. An excellent show overall and only 81 on the list. And what is it with these so-called 'reality shows' or the 'search for talent' programs. Holy Moley and YIKES all rolled together you folks in charge of programming! Let's get our heads out of you know where.

Practically every night my TV is tuned to the CW. I don't understand America's fascination with reality TV and 1/2 hour comedies that rely on toilet humor and sexual innuendos for entertainment. Plus Smash, Revenge, Person of Interest, The Good Wife, Once Upon a Time, Fringe--these are great shows that need an audience. Come on 18-49 year olds, get an IQ.

absolutely agree!!!

i'm still surprised about TVD being that low in the overall rankings...

I think this list, with 4 reality shows in the Top 10, 6 in the Top 25, is evidence that network TV viewers are indeed, morons! And I havent even gotten to the presence of 2 and a half men and 2 Broke Girls!

Quite suprised by this list, thought the vampire diaries would of been alot higher than it was.

Including reality tv (American idol / X factor etc) is debatable as they force it down our throats at tea time..

Strange feelings occur when seeing this list... I mean come on. Some of the better series were on CW and they're all way down. Is this network not available in some parts of the USA or ??

List overview:

1) American idol, the voice... please... I thought this was a list about TV Series.

2) Modern Family at #4 is overrated... this show needs to do something radical and adding another baby ain't it imo.

3) Props for Big Bang... I'd like to see them switch with MF, but life's not fair.

4) What 2'n half doing there? Kutcher ruined this show for me

5) Once upon at #16... nice, definitely need to try this show.

6) Terra Nova ... shudders...

7) House standing strong at #31... what a way to go out after 8 years! Props!

8) Person... What a show!! Definitely worth any1's time!

9) The Simpsons, maybe my all time favorite cartoon. Stopped watching after season 12. Picked it up since season 17 again. Let's forget about those in-betwees seasons... they sucked!

10) Happy Endings now at #42, not bad. It could go top 20 if they keep mixin' it up.

11) Don't trust already at #53... damn. Think it's really funny in a weird "i don't care about any1 except myself" way.

12) Suburgatory at #61... very good but why aren't CW shows higher than these???

13) Grimm only at #81??? This should be top 50 at least... come on people! Monroe !!!

14) Awake at #104... why did they cancel this ??? Did the execs. even get the show??

15) AAAaHHH TVD only at #122. This is not happening!

16) TSC at #144... they'll be missed!! Lots of potential in that one.

17) Nikita at #149 , what is with you people??? What does it take to zap to the right shows??

So in conclusion the CW needs to be a lot higher in rankings/ratings as they have a lot of better shows at the moment.

Otherwise I'm happy for big bang and person, grimm, and any other show I watch that I'm forgetting here.

Regads from a TV fanatic with mixed feelings :-)

Congrats to The Big Bang Theory for making it in the Top 10! But this list just proves that America watches too much crap (aka "Reality" shows). Why are they even included in here?! I don't even consider reality shows as series; they don't even deserve to be called series! Whilst reality succeeds, quality programs such as The Secret Circle get the axe over crap like Hart Of Dixie. It just doesn't make a lot of sense. And it turns out that TSC had better ratings than all the other crap over on The CW besides TVD and SPN. I still can't believe that Supernatural landed at #140 at the bottom. I thought that its ratings would be similar to Fringe and it'd be near TVD in the ranks.

not that i watch many of these, i expected revenge to be higher on the list

The Secret Circle may have dropped because there was no focus until Joe came in a Blackwell. It makes me angry that Charles and Dawn get mentioned in articles. They were useless.

You've gotta be kidding! This list makes no sense at all. Doesn't anybody like an intelligent drama anymore. Does everybody just want to blitz out on inane comedies?
Reply

In TOP 10 you can see 4 reality/contest shows, 4 comedies, 1 sport event and 1 drama (with a very specific target audience). This wouldn't be surprising if it was for all demo groups i.e. counting teenagers and elderly people. But it's for 18-49 demo, which means in the US, young adults and people in their 30s and 40s really love out-of-date singing contests and easy-to-digest sitcoms (Sport events is an all time classic so it doesn't count)

I mean, seriously? Do people in their late 20s and early 30s prefer a boring singing contest (all of them seems the same to me, can't really see the difference) over a good drama or sci-fi tv show?

I just hope that most 18-49ers prefer cable tv like HBO, AMC or Showtime, were all the good tv shows really are. Major Network TV is No Man's Land if you are searching for a good show nowdays

So happy for Smash! Not many shows make it to #38 the first season.

Well done!

rating is just part of the picture. Networks cannot base the decision of keeping of canceling a show just on ratings: there is the cost per episode to consider, the hype that the series generates (positive or negative), the interest on the show, etc.

Just looking at the position of a show in this list doesn't make any sense, otherwise we could get the conclusion, for example, that Allen Gregory was more appreciated than Grimm, Charlie's Angels more than The Vampire diaries, and The playboy club more than Fringe.

wow... look at the first places! At first I was like "icant believe POI is only 32" and then "What?... Castle and Bones in 46-47 and Grimm only 81? WTF?". But after seeing Fringe on 105 and Supernatural on 140 i decided this list sucks so im not bothering with it anymore

I don't get how The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural can be SO far down the list? I mean, The secret Circle has a better rating than supernatural and got cancelled, even though they're both CW shows, and I was under the impression that TVD was a huge hit in USA, but it is so low on the list? This list --> my mind is blown

Shocked... and still wondering why they cancelled "The Secret Circle" (#139) that gain more rating than what they decided to renewed "Hart of Dixie" (#147), "Gossip Girl" (#145), 90210 (#144) and "Nikita" (#149), which clearly shows that CW is a big mess... and the main reason why it is hard to adapt from their new shows is that YOU WATCH THEM AND YOU WILL END UP HANGING KNOWING THAT IT NO LONGER AIRING NEXT YEAR...

You have to keep in mind that these are season averages. The Secret Cricle slid HUGE in its final weeks. It was pulling 0.5s behind the network's biggest lead-in The Vampire Diaries while Hart of Dixie was getting 0.7s behind the network's weakest, Gossip Girl. If The CW had renewed it, they would have put it on Friday where it would have probably dropped to 0.3s and died. Don't blame the CW, blame the fans that stopped watching half way through the season.

What it shows, beyond all doubt, is that Americans have no taste and the planners do not know what they are doing.

Terra Nova gets to number 24 and gets cancelled????

Alcatraz at number 30 - cancelled????

Unforgettable reaches 64 but still gets cancelled???

Programme planners need shooting.

As more than one person has noted, these are NETWORK ratings, not CABLE ratings, and USA is cable channel. That's why shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Burn Notice, etcetera, aren't on here.

People who watch a lot of this "crap" also probably think there is nothing good on TV when they don't put the effort to look for "good" tv. So...they flip the channels and leave the channel as background noise while they do the dishes, vacuum, change diapers, etc..so one lucky reality show gets to win a viewer who just leaves it on that station for just background noise. Either that or....they always "hear" good things about NCIS, Law & Order, CSI, etc and tune in.

I do not understand the fascination with all these reality shows, SO many of them are of such poor quality/taste. No wonder the networks keep churning them out. SMH

Didnt gossip girl get renewed for a final season?

I saw a few episodes of Secret Circle, Hart of Dixie, and Ringer -- and they all were horribly written shows. I think a lot of people who watched that show even admitted to it. TSC in particular had so much potential, but the writers just.. made a mess of things I dont know why theres such a huge outcry over it being cancelled.
Reply
Flag
That happens with most of the CW shows, look at what's happening to Vampire Diaries and Supernatural
Reply
Flag
first of watching a few episodes just does not cut it, Ringer and TSC were long continuing story arc that you had to watch start to finish, TSC was very good and deserves a renewal, and Ringer was good at well, now I will admit that Hart of Dixie could have been better

Unfortunately, I'm not surprised that reality shows are at the top of the list.

Maybe I missed something.... There are a whole lot of shows I didn't see on the list, including not one AMC show (I could have skipped over some, but hey). Are these only the major networks?

Regardless, this list only prove that a whole lot of people have little or no taste and watch too many reality shows.

AMC is not a network, it's a cable channel. That's two different leagues.
Reply
Flag
There's too many reality shows at the top of the list!!!! Couldn't they just put the results show and the performance show together? That way, every show in the top 30 would move up 4 spots :) . Also, why can't they just put the Sunday night football programs all in one, since after all, it is the same thing.
Reply
Flag
the most unbelivable part of this is the TSC rated much better in average than Nikita, Hart of Dixie or Gossip Girl and yet they got renewed and it didn't.. can someone please explain this logically cos it simply does not make ANY sense in any terms..
Reply
Flag
Because TSC was on after the CW's highest rated show. They expected it would get similar ratings and it didn't. Perhaps they figured if they moved it elsewhere next season the ratings would decrease more. I'm not saying Beauty and the Beast will do better after the Vampire Diaries next season (I doubt it will) but they are looking for a new hit. When a show has a high rated lead in they except it will do well. HOD had a bad lead in but held its own in ratings (not good ratings but it didn't have a good lead in like TSC). TSC had a good lead in and didn't get high ratings. Simple as that. It was a good show though!

What a sad state we are in. Though maybe hope lies in the possibility that these are based on a flawed ratings system. Most viewers with taste, real tv lovers, the kind of viewers who probably use this website, don't watch everything Live (which is what the ratings are based on), not to mention most of the best shows are on cable. Most of the mind numbing crap on here is watched by those who have nothing better to do and unfortunately as long as they watch it live, while we set aside a time of our choosing to engage in complex and thought provoking series, our viewership doesnt count.

It's funny to see the debate range about the quality of shows ranked 80, 90 or 150, but the domination belongs to reality shows and football. Obesity and voyeurism. 'Nuff said about todays "main demographic".

It's about the ratings not about how good a show is.

Supernatural => CW

Terra Nova => Fox

Something that CW considered a ratings hit, Fox would consider a major failure that is why "more successfull" shows like Terra Nova get canceled over "smaller" shows like Supernatural. Supernatural is much better then Terra Nova though although the current season was a bit... headless.

Give shows a proper chance
