Who's ready for some steamy sex and marital heartbreak in the Hamptons? Showtime has set a premiere date and released the first trailer for its upcoming drama The Affair, which stars Dominic West, Maura Tierney, Joshua Jackson, and Ruth Wilson. The provocative series will premiere Sunday, October 19 at 10pm, the network announced Friday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
First announced at the TCA winter press tour in January, The Affair comes from executive producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment) and will present both the male and female perspectives of marital infidelity in kind of a "he said, she said" style, using the memory biases of individual characters "to both misdirect and intrigue."
Here's the set-up: Wilson plays Alison, a waitress in the Hamptons who's trying to recover from an as-yet-unknown tragedy. She's married to Jackson's character Cole, who's struggling to save his family ranch from collapsing under financial strife. Things get complicated when Alison starts sleeping with West's character Noah, a teacher and aspiring novelist from New York who's spending the summer in Montauk with his wife of 17 years, played by Tierney. Or more succinctly, as Hitfix's Alan Sepinwall put it, "McNulty & Alice Morgan cheat on Lisa Miller & Pacey." Check out the trailer, then weigh in: Will you be tuning in for The Affair?
The Affair premieres Sunday, October 19 at 10pm on Showtime.
