The Best and Worst Commercials of Super Bowl XLVII

Like one of Stefon's magical nightclubs, Super Bowl XLVII had everything: Football. Beyonce. Ray Lewis. A power outage that inspired some pretty good Revolution / FlashForward / Total Blackout jokes. Oh, and commercials. Commercials featuring babies! And cars! And beer! And... Stevie Wonder as a voodoo master?

Le sigh: We found most of this year's crop to be pretty pathetic—but of course that didn't stop us from yammering about them on the internet! Below, you'll find nearly every ad that aired this year, starting with our picks for best and worst, and polls so you vote on our selections. Name your own favorites and least-favorites in the comments!

The Best

Best Buy – "Asking Amy" feat. Amy Poehler

Curse you, big box, for using our dear Amy Poehler, but damn if she doesn't make everything better.

Oreo – "Whisper Fight"

A clear winner. Silly, called back the "Great Taste/Less Filling" thing, but framed in a funny way.

Taco Bell – "Viva Young"

Yeah, the premise is nearly as old as the actors in the ad, but it was funny and well done. (Although it's time to officially retire that fun. song now, right? Translating it into Spanish doesn't make it any less exhausting.)

Toyota Rav4 – "Wish Granted" feat. Kaley Cuoco

Sometimes you can't go wrong with a solid crowd-pleaser. Also Kaley Cuoco.

GoPro – "Dubstep Baby"

Definitely the best use of an infant this year.

Budweiser Clydesdales – "Brotherhood"

Awwwwwwwwww.

The Worst

2 Broke Girls – "Spectacular"

Bud Light – "Journey" feat. Stevie Wonder

Poor Stevie Wonder. He deserves better than this. And so do we.

Bud Light – "Lucky Chair" also feat. Stevie Wonder

Kia – "Space Babies"

Budweiser Black Crown – "Coronation"

Budweiser Black Crown – "Celebration"

Also heard in the TV.com peanut gallery after this pair of ads came on: "Between this and 2 Broke Girls, that Peter, Bjorn, and John song is forever ruined." "So fancy. Too bad it's still Budweiser at the end of the day." "Budweiser Black Crown: When leather jackets, goatees, and acoustic guitars aren't enough."

Audi – "Prom"

Go ahead, invade other people's personal spaces and just kiss them. Because it's brave and not at all creepy or horrible or slightly rape-y to do that. Also: People LIKE it.

Volkswagen – "Get Happy"

GoDaddy.com – "Perfect Match"

THIS IS WHY NO ONE LIKES YOU, GODADDY. NO ONE. (But, good to see Fernando from Chuck getting work!)

The Ones We're Not Quite Sure About

Doritos – "Doritos Goat"

Was it funny? We remember laughing.

Samsung – "The Next Big Thing"

Would've been better if it wasn't feature-length? Regardless, <3 u Bob Odenkirk.

The Rest

Speed Stick – "Handle It"

M & Ms – "Love Ballad" feat. Naya Rivera

Pepsi Next – "Party"

Doritos – "Fashionista"

Calvin Klein – "Concept"

Cars.com – "Wolf"

MilkPEP – "Milk Run" feat. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Subway – "Peeps"

GoDaddy.com – "Big Idea"

Sketchers – "Chase"

Century 21 – "Wedding"

Blackberry – "What It CAN'T Do"

E*Trade – "Save It"

Beck's Sapphire – "Serenade"

Wonderful Pistachios – "Crackin' Gagnam Style"

Gildan – "Getaway"

Hyundai – "Stuck"

Hyundai – "Epic Playdate"

Hyundai – "Team"

Tide – "Miracle Stain"

Mercedes-Benz – "Soul" feat. Willem Dafoe, Kate Upton, Usher

Axe Apollo – "Lifegaurd"

Dodge Ram – "Farmer"

Kia – "Hotbots"

Coca-Cola – "Mirage"

Jeep – "Whole Again"

MiO Fit – "Anthem" feat. Tracy Morgan

Lincoln – "Road Trip"

Sodastream – "The Sodastream Effect"

Taco Bell ad would have been way better with Leonard in it.

Like McKayla Maroney, I was not impressed.
I did chuckle at the wolf pack football thing with the kiddies, and the Budweiser one with the horse reuniting with his trainer or whatever was sweet and had me warm and fuzzy, but overall...meh.

Anyone else look at the Audi ad and think, this is were Pretty Little Liars throw their actors who have served their purpose and no longer matter to the plot?

"Between this and 2 Broke Girls, that Belle & Sebastian song is forever ruined." If you mean the song that's in the commercial and the opening credits of 2 Broke Girls, then it's by Peter, Bjorn and John, NOT Belle & Sebastian.

Jesus Christ all those ads were in one football game?? No wonder americans go crazy and kill each other at the drop of a hat. That is ridiculous!

First of all, I agree that for the most part, the commercials were pretty pathetic this year. There were half a dozen on this list I had forgotten about already.

Best - Oreo whisper, Audi Prom, Budweiser Clydales.

Worst - The only one that bothered me was the Doritos ad. First of all, I am so damn sick and tired of "We Are Young." Second, the whole "old people acting young, gee, isn't that cute" thing is getting so overused and cliched. I guess the combination of those two things just really turned me off.

I am also kinda bothered by the extremely negative reaction people are having to the Go Daddy kiss commercial. Are you all hating it because you think it is too graphic, or is it really too hard to believe a beautiful woman might find a smart guy attractive?

Just a kiss would have been kind of cute. All the smacking and slurping sounds made it gross, no matter who is involved.
Reply
Flag
1) The dumb blonde is a horrible stereotype
2) The unattractive, overweight nerd is a horrible stereotype
3) It was gross and uncomfortable
4) It was really really gross
Reply
Flag
1) I think you mean Taco Bell?
2) No, the commercial is offensive because it suggests beautiful women can't be smart and smart guys can't be beautiful. They objectify two entities in the most cliche way possible. The actual kissing part didn't add anything to the message other than it was a cheap shot at trying to be controversial. Boring and narrow minded, yeah, lots to love there.

I did mean Taco Bell, my bad. I appreciate your answers. You both make a good point about the commercial peretuating stereotypes.

I also wanted to clear up something - I did not love or hate this commercial; for me it was just one of the rest. I was just taken aback at how extremely negative some people's reactions were. I thought that maybe some people didn't like it because they were too narrow minded to believe the woman might find intelligence an attractive quality. I'm glad to find that there are intelligent viewers.

I thought Tide and M&Ms were the best of the night. The Budweiser ad was rather touching, even though I hate Budweiser and the song "Landslide."

Amy Poehler's was funny. And i liked the 2BG one, it's nothing very far from the show itself, only more "flashy" because of the SB.
Clysdales? C'mon get over animals! that's just a cheap trick.
And nobody said anything about the Mercedes Benz one, which it's kind of a rip off of one for Renault Clio made in the 90's in Argentina, at least the concept of satan asking for your soul over a car.
Most of them i didn't like, but i think it's because they are made for american audiences, wich i'm not (although the Axe Apollo one i think it was made here in Argentina, it's been on the air for almost a month here)

I like Budweiser for being sentimental and GoDaddy for effectively delivering message without so much drama but I have to agree with some people here that Superbowl commercials are better last year. As for Doritos, they've done better... that's me, a little disappointed. Lastly, M&M's I think they could do better since 'sexy and i know it' last year was a hit this one with 'i will do anything for love' just does not work for me.

Where's the Leon Sandcastle ad? D: Easily one of the best.

1.) At least we're all in agreement why ANYONE watches 2 Broke Girls anyway, right? Just wish Kat Dennings had better material.

2.) Budwiser always finds the right mix of music, sentimentality, and emotion (with ANIMALS!) to absolutely manipulate the viewer in their SB commercials. I think the one last year was a near tear-jerker, too. It's also pretty well done marketing. I didn't WANT Budwiser after seeing it, but I damn well know who made the commercial. Come on....who doesn't get a little misty eyed hearing "Landslide" anyway? It's second only to that ASPCA ad with Sarah McLaughlin.
Reply
Flag
The only thing that makes me teary-eyed about the Sarah McLaughlin ASPCA ad is the fact that the song, "Angel", is horrible. It's not a song; it's a dirge. Worst is, I'm a female, so I guess I'm supposed to love that song.

I enjoyed PSY's pistachios the best, personally. The Budweiser Brotherhood one was great, too.

There was a preview of commercials before the Superbowl started, and it included a scorpion stealing a bikini top. What was that for/did I miss it/was that not one of this year's ads?

Man talk about cynics! I liked the prom commercial it kind of had a 1980's John Hughes film side to it. Well acted and very cool commercial. The goat commercial was also awesome and I enjoyed the Jamaican one people need to lighten up about that.

"Would've been better if it wasn't feature length?" No, these ads need more room to breathe. The genie ad was good, but it and others moved at one scene every half-second. I don't think Rogen and Rudd's riff would have been half as funny quickly smashed into 60 seconds.

Amy Pohler's Best Buy ad really wasn't great or terrible, "the rest" it is.

The Oreo whisper fight cracked me up until the very last line when the cop felt the need to whisper "we're the cops". That was too dumb somehow.

I didn't see that GoPro ad during the game, this is the first I'm seeing of it. It almost makes my "best" list for the concept and showing the product doing what it does best, but it feels to me like it needed one more thing.

MaryAnn sure knows how to tweet succinctly. This gets my "the rest" list, it's mocking the halftime sleazetacular and it's showing both actresses looking really hot (as well as presenting the rest of the cast surprisingly adroitly), but it comes off demeaning and it says nothing about the show. That said, I don't think it's among "the worst", as there was a lot of log-droppers this year.

Love me some Stevie Wonder, those ads weren't quite what they were hoping to be but they weren't bad either.

Tim's Kia tweet had me in stitches.

They paid Bar Rafaeli to kiss someone and do nothing else of note, that's a tad whore-esque I'm sorry to say. It is for Jesse Heiman as well, but... c'mon, I mean, duh. Also this was the most unwatchable ad of the game.

Loved the goat! Dunno why, but just something about it worked. Plus, HD goat eyes! I bet they weren't allowed to feed that goat one chip though.

Bah-Bodenkirk is the part that worked for you? He played his standard "executive" role, he's got so much more potential in him but he keeps taking these same cliche roles, he needs to break away from this stuff. Still, I enjoyed it as I liked all the players in it (except LeBron, who I'm indifferent on), and I almost agree with y'all that it ran too long. They said "Saumsung" enough though, that was important.

Ha! That Speed Stick ad is funnier today than it was yesterday, I can't quite figure out why, but it cracked me up.

The M&Ms Love Ballad was both funny and intensely disturbing.

The Pepsi Next Party was cute, not a home run, but it did tell me about the product FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. What the hell? This isn't a new product by today's standards, yet "60% less sugar" somehow has been avoided by every previous ad, or was it just not made part of the actual storyline of the ads before?

Tim again caught me laughing on the Doritos "Fashionista" tweet. I did enjoy the ad despite its predictability, but I think the punchline with the mom could have been better.

Calvin Klein is sure there's a lot gay guys and straight women out there watching the game, I wonder if that will pay off, I'm guessing it will (last year's halftime show had higher ratings than the game).

Ha, the Wolf Cars-com ad was amusing.

That Tide Miracle Stain one made me mad, she'd rather see her family back in middle class than watch her shitty expansion team lose? (Sorry, still bitter about the "2 versions of the Cleveland Browns while LA still has no team" debacle. The NFL can suck a fat one after letting Buccaneers stay in Tampa despite having the lowest draw in the league in a tiny town when Florida has 3 teams.)

That Axe Apollo ad was among the worst in my book.

The Dodge Ram Farmer ad was among my favorites right up until we got to the actual item being sold, then it was an eye-roll. Such a powerful message for such a middling truck.

HATED the Kia Hotbots, what was the message even?

Mio Fit, the ad that watered down Tracy Morgan (it's ironic because that's what you're supposed to do with the product).

Wil Wheaton was the only good thing about that Jimmy Fallon ad, that was a flop all the way, and its tagline made no sense at all.

My big issue with the 2BG ad, apart from the demeaning nature of it, but that Dennings takes a second to pause and ask what the point is. And there, right there, was a moment for awareness of how they're being marketed, but then she's cool with it because it's the Super Bowl. Sigh.

I really didn't like the SpeedStick ad. I mean, just, no. He's stealing your dryer. You cut him, you don't fawn over him for lying about wanting to fold your clothes. #LaundromatThunderDome

I had the same problem with the 2 Broke Girls ad as well, it's like they know there's humor there, but don't bother to exploit it.

He wasn't stealing the dryer, her dryer was done and he was sick of waiting for her to get her crap out of there. As a commoner, I've gone through this so many times that I can't help feel the pain. That said, here in LA I've rarely come across a laundromat that had all its dryers occupied in the last decade or so, but I'd certainly cut anybody who didn't empty their dryer in a reasonable amount of time (busy: 5 mins, not busy: 10 mins).
Reply

He's not stealing the dryer. Her clothes are dry. She's done with it and stopping someone else from using it. She's being slow and not taking them out in a timely fashion. She's the one that deserves to be cut.

u americans r stupid, stupid people, u put the 2 broke girls commercial between the worst when is excellent! it has the perfect amount of humor from the show and put a car commercial with penny, whom i love as well as tbbt, but is just penny snapping fingers selling...what? magic? a retarded family with idiotic wishes? a horrible violet suit? a chihuahua? oh, no, wait! a car...that show no features nor a good first plane of it, but has the aux. tired removed, so probably is less safe to use...

Well, I would have gladly subbed in on the GoDaddy commercial for the computer nerd, and having Kat Dennings on the pole will always be a bright spot for me to watch, Clydesdales was good, have always like Paul Harver tho not real big on it being a Dodge commercial, wasn't really impressed with much of anything else.

Okay, the Clydesdale was my favorite because I am a dork...there were others I liked, but other than the Paul Rudd/Seth Rogen one, we are going to see all of them a lot. Random observation though, because I do watch football games, I knew the best time to jump in the shower was with five minutes left before the half because time outs would start, the two minute warning time out, and the half time football review, so I was doing after shower stuff when the old people commercial came on and could only hear it. I heard the music and swear to god, it is so ubiquitous, I didn't notice it was in Spanish.

This was Dodge's attempt to replicate what Clint Eastwood's "Halftime in America" did last year. I thought this one failed miserably. If it had had a real message about supporting farmers or valuing America or something it would have been amazing, but the whole "so now go buy our crappy pickup" message at the end completely undercut the farmer thing.

I thought it was a well-made commercial, but between Paul Harvey's inclusion and the end result of the ad ("Buy this truck, be like a farmer."), I wasn't a big fan.

Had it been something that was produced and paid for by the NFU or the Farm Bureau, and without the car at the end, I would've probably been a bit more keen on the spot.

But then I wasn't moved by the Clydesdale ad, either. Because I'm dead inside. It's a medical fact.

I normally don't like Paul Harvey much (although Harry Shearer's impression is hilarious), but I thought his words were used powerfully here... only to be wasted with a turd of a message at the end.

I guess I'm also dead inside Noel because that Clydesdale ad did nothing for me at all.

Also, the NFL's "surprise" ad (not seen here) was one of my favorites, just a bit of whimsy.

You obviously didn't watch the entire commercial. There were other races. Speaking as a farmer, we don't care if anyone exploits us to get the word out there that we're even there at all. That was an old Paul Harvey tribute to farmers that most of us play every year to remind us that even if other people don't realize how important we are, it's a great life.

It wasn't about farmers. It was about trying to tell an idealized version of farmers to people who aren't farmers so they can tap into some vague notions of "doing something," like farmers, by buying a big truck.

Doesn't show struggles with farm subsidies, agricultural companies, and the ups and downs of federal farm policy that influence yours, and their, lives.

While an ad showing farmers being miserable probably isn't a message that's going to sell anything ever, and surely isn't going to celebrate the farmer as a lifestyle choice, it probably would have been a better tribute than trying to hock a plasticky truck insulting the Ram badge name.
