The Big Bang Theory Season 8 Will See a Long Engagement, a New Comic Book Store, and the Possible Return of Professor Proton

Of all the TV shows that host panels at Comic-Con, The Big Bang Theory has more of a tie-in than most; the CBS comedy even kicked off its panel on Friday with a clip from last season's episode in which Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj try—and fail—to get tickets to the annual event.

Perhaps it was fitting, then, that the cast wasn't actually in attendance. Only the shows writers, as well as executive producers Bill Prady and Steve Molaro, took the stage in Ballroom 20, where they shared some behind-the-scenes factoids as well as a few details about the upcoming eighth season. Here's what we learned:

1. Star Wars co-stars Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones had never met in person until they guest-starred on The Big Bang Theory last season. Fisher's first words to Jones? "Dad!"

2. Sheldon disappearing on a train in the Season 7 finale does not mean gloom and doom for his relationship with Amy. "He didn't leave because of Amy," Molaro said. "I would argue that they do have their own weird brand of happiness right now. That kiss on the train is pretty indicative of that." Interesting note: There was a second version of the kiss where Sheldon didn't feel tricked into getting on the train and just kissed Amy because he was having a good time.

3. Even though Bob Newhart's character Professor Proton passed away last season, Molaro promised, "He could come back." (Though that's coming from the same man who decided to kill him off in the first place. "That was my fault," Molaro joked.)

4. While discussing the Star Wars Day episode, writer Eric Kaplan actually said he wasn't particularly fond of the George Lucas franchise, spurring moderator Craig Ferguson to quip that a mob was forming in the back of the room.

5. Will the elevator ever be fixed? Probably not! "I think those stairs are the only exercise those guys get," Molaro said. Prady noted that the building is still waiting on elevator parts, but they'll be waiting a long time because production uses the stairs to accommodate "walk and talks" on the show.

6. It's unlikely that fans will ever see Penny's failed movie Serial Ape-ist 2: Monkey See, Monkey Kill on The Big Bang Theory, but Comic-Con fans were treated to a sneak peek of the trailer, which includes the line, "This film is not yet rated, but don't worry, she gets naked in it." Serial Ape-ist co-star Wil Wheaton then appeared on the panel to much applause.

7. Even though Stuart's comic book store burned down last season, the guys will not lose their weekly ritual. "There will be a comic book store in the future," Molaro said. "The show will not go on without a comic book store, I promise you." Bonus scoop: Stuart will still be living with Mrs. Wolowitz when the show returns.

8. Fans may be hoping to see Bernadette and Howard take the next step and have children, but it won't happen anytime soon. "There's no plans for babies," Molaro said. "No plans for the moment."

9. Speaking of taking the next step, Penny and Leonard will enjoy a very long engagement. "They are engaged, but the wedding is sometime off in the future," Molaro said. "Penny's first goal is to put the date far enough in the future so everyone knows that she's not pregnant." The real challenge for the writers will be how to get around not revealing Penny's last name throughout wedding planning.

The Big Bang Theory Season 8 premieres Monday, September 22 at 8pm on CBS.

I'm hoping Sheldon comes back in series 8 as a man of the world. Don't get me wrong, keep some of the innocence and geekiness but a little more sexually aware and some human warmth would happily confuse us all. I think the interactions alone with Amy would be absolute gold. What do you think 'our writers'????? X

that serial ape-ist plot seems familiar to an trashy 70's
horror movie called night of the bloody apes sounds over used
and out dated.

I hope Wil Wheaton will be in this season only if they include in his TV show on Syfy, that would be great. They could even build a episode around Wil taking the guys to the Syfy studio and what not.

Glad to know Stuart will still be around, his character has so much potential, here's hoping sans the comic-book store he has an opportunity to grow.

Well I can't say I'm surprised the writers are having it be a long engagement, but Penny's reason 'to put the date far enough in the future so everyone knows that she's not pregnant' is actually so something her character would say and do that I don't even really care.

I'd watch Serial Ape-ist. It couldn't be any worse than Sharknado.

A long engagement = the next 3 years!
Yes,new comic book store would be great although I would add a twist,Sheldon is co-owner with Stuart.Think of the possibilities for comedy right there
Never fix the elevator,it gives the show it's own unique charm.
Bernadette and Howard having nerdlings and nerdettes?I would wait for the end of the final season, kids sometimes kill a sitcom.
Stuart living with Mrs.Wolowitz is gonna be some priceless comedic moments.
The return of Bob Newhart is always welcomed!
Plus, how about more appearances of actors from Star Wars and Trek on the show, always funny to see how they interact with Sheldon.

I know that elevator repair can be an expensive & laborious proposition, so I wonder what would be involved in replacing one that was destroyed or beyond repair.

This show has gone to the dogs altogether. Granted, I haven't watched since the Valentines ep, but as long as Amy is still present, I'm out.

Yes, it has. Imagine there are still people watching? How sad.

It's even sadder posting a comment on a Big Bang Theory community post when you've stopped watching the series.

Amy is awesome and she brings another kind of female to the tv that you not can find anywhere else!

Will the elevator ever be fixed? The elevator was destroyed, so no.

Maybe Josh Peck could start recurring as the new comic book guy. I mean after all, CHOCOLATE CHIP SCONES!
