The Biggest TV Character Deaths of 2013 (PHOTOS)

As the year comes to a close, we're looking back at everything that's happened on TV in the last 365 days, both good and bad. Last week, we memorialized the shows that signed off for good in 2013, and now it's time to honor the characters we lost along the way. But before we begin, you may want to get comfortable, because as it turns out, we've just experienced one of the most deadly periods in TV history. Seriously, a crap-ton of characters died this year—and not just because of the Red Wedding. So grab some Kleenex and let's collectively mourn all the fictional folks who bit the dust 2013!

Before you ask: Characters with asterisks next to their names died but then somehow came back to life—a surprisingly common trend this year.

Also—and this should go without saying—there are spoilers ahead.

*Hands you a tissue* So whose death hit you the hardest? And don't say Brody.

Charlie from Supernatural isn't dead. She's off in Oz with Dorothy. We might not see her again, but she's not dead.

I still can't believe that Hank died. Glee is going to be a real/is disaster without Finn.

I wish Barbie (Under the Dome, just to be clear) would've died though. That would end the series.

Maybe you should have put the slideshow to music,

Is it too late? This is a great idea. Kinda like TCM Remembers.

Hahaha I miss Derek Grumpy Hale with the Alpha status too;)

But the sadest for me? Debra, Boyd and Tommy Merlyn.

Ah, okay.... forgive my slowness, I thought the photo gallery with those who died was kind of like the "You may also like" with completely unrelated articles, so I didn't pay it any attention since I thought it would be a text list. My bad. Here's who I think were the biggest deaths, and I know I will forget a lot (and not necessarily in order of importance/shock):

1. Hank Schrader (Breaking Bad) (and his partner for that matter, whom we had grown to love)
2. Debra Morgan (quite predictable, really, but still sad)
3. The entire Red Wedding casualties.
4. All of the main characters that died in the Spartacus finale, though we knew it was coming.
5. Herschel (TWD). Screw the Governor... Herschel was the man! Other cast/characters) that went out this year on the show also deserve credit, especially Milton.
6. Sister Jude (though again, we saw it coming)
7. Bullet (The Killing)
8. Walter White (though we knew it would probably happen)
9. Brody (much as I didn't really like the show I found myself a bit tooth and nails as to whether it would happen or not when it happened, and it did, to my surprise)

There are more, of course, but a lot of the deaths were easily predictable and not all that well done, in my opinion.

Rather than a list of "biggest character deaths" this seems to be a list of all character deaths...

You had the Eleventh Doctor but you forgot to include poor ol' Handles? He survived century after century of battles and war so he could remind The Doctor about the Tardis phone. Plus it was a surprisingly sad moment. R.I.P Handles.

So far has to be Andrea Cantillo followed by Brody. Then Arlo. Then Nora (because she was one of the only reason I still watched that show. And watched is the correct tense.)
I do not believe Jimmy/Steve is dead on Shameless, though I know he is no longer a full time recurring character. but I let it slide that he is on the list because it's Christmas.
How can Spartacus be on this list??????!!!!!!!. History and a really good Kirk Douglas Movie told you how he ended, where is the surprise.???????
Kevin Tran, R.I.P brother. Beats anyone on the Red Wedding list because the books were published years ago. I liked seeing the scene but knew it was coming. Killing Kevin was out of the blue!
Rafi ain't dead, biotch! Rafi is Immortal!!!!!!!!!!!! so is Dirty Randy!!!!!!!!
Herschel I will miss. Not as much as Rick, but still....
Terry Bellfluer, frankly I just assumed he was going to stick around because human-crazy in a vampire-crazy world was something else to think about. Him pulling his own plug that way was a bit of a shocker. Also, I grew to like him,
Luna Garza, way to rip my heart out of my ...let's say chest region. She was already Shiva!!!. And her character looked like it had a lot of potential... compared to Sam. or at least Sam alone. The final couple episodes brought me around a bit, but the whole Sam/new girl romance was fluffle. Could have had those scenes with Luna
Anyway, this was my rambling reaction to the list as I was viewing it. I don't watch all of the shows, so American Horror story, and the Killing. etc. well I have no opinions about their characters.. maybe you do.

'Benjamin Longshadow' as well as his wonderful and talented portrayer - Russell Means 'Banshee'. Native Americans in this country lost a powerful voice when this great man passed away. Please add him to this list.

Yeah it's crazy - I was wondering why there was no mention of Sherlock in the Top 100 Everything, and then I realized there was no Sherlock in 2013 - I remembered because I got my sister both seasons for Christmas last year. It's crazy sad to think it's been that long! So excited for Season 3.

I see. To be fair, I could not see the list, so no asteriks' either. My apologies. Really, though, even though I could not see the list I seriously don't think his death* was that monumental, although Holmes' reaction was very well done. Maybe because we knew from the start he would not actually die.

So whose death hit you the hardest?

Missed this ?. DS Ripley from Luther, no question. Most of all because Elba is bringing Luther to the big screen, but no Warren Brown, poor sod.

Gemma – Sons of Anarchy

I hate her more than anyone on SOA, maybe even on TV at this moment !

Yes, she can NOT stay alive for a long time. We all want her dead.
SPARTACUS, the whole three seasons are GREAT! real drama, real tears, excellent actors/ actress.
1.0 Gods of the Arena is before Spartacus time. I would watch this after watching the three seasons with Spartacus. (I did that).
With Spartacus
Two characters to watch: CRIXUS and GANNICUS

Another tip for Showtime\writers of Homeland: Person of Interest did it right, killing Carter, NOT Reese. See how that works?

My bas and sorry I miss the asterisks thing :-( but the on I meant was Slade Wilson from Arrow. Dis he realy died when he was injected with the serum?
Why Eric Northman isn't in it ?

Maybe you should have put the slideshow to music, with the Ken Burns treatment. Is it that big a deal to kill off a character from an anthology/miniseries (American Horror Story) or shows that are going off the air (e.g., Breaking Bad)?
Reply

I'd argue that Walter White's death was huge, so yeah?
1

Never watched Breaking Bad, but wasn't the whole premise of the show that Walter White was dying and became a meth manufacturer to provide for his family? Quelle supris! At the end of the series, he's dead.
Reply
Flag
It didn't surprise anyone, but when the main character of the best show ever dies, that's still a pretty big deal. The deaths that were more unexpected and/or tragic in that season are also on the list.

These aren't the biggest tv character deaths in 2013, these are ALL the tv character deaths in 2013.

Here are deaths that saddened me:

Richard Harrow and Eddie Kessler (Boardwalk Empire)
Spartacus and his army (Spartacus)
Walter White and Hank Schrader (Breaking Bad)
Cat, Robb and Grey Wind (GoT)
Merle Dixon and Hershel Greene (TWD)
Tricia (OiTNB)

Here are deaths of characters I used to like but don't care for now:

Debra Morgan (Dexter)
Tara and Clay (SoA)
Andrea (TWD)
Brody (Homeland)

Here are deaths of despicable characters, the ones that made me cheer when they died:

The Governor (TWD)
Agent Knox (Boardwalk Empire)
Tiberius (Spartacus)
Uncle Jack, Todd and the rest of the their gang (Breaking Bad)
Galen (SoA)
Hank and The Witch Council (AHS: Coven)
Helena (Orphan Black)

Characters who died and I don't give a flying fuck about them:

Terry Bellefleur and Warlo (True Blood)
Naevia (Spartacus)

Characters I want to see die:

Gemma and Jax (SoA)
Bill Compton (True Blood)
Gillian Darmody (Boardwalk Empire)
Joffrey, Walder Frey, and Locke (GoT)
Sam Healy (OiTNB)

i didn't realize how many of my favorite characters died this year until i saw the list:( the ones that upset me the most(though i'm sure i'm forgetting some) in no particular order are:

Luli(Blacklist)-While we didn't know much about her character through the year, it was clear Reddington cared for and trusted her without reservation, and her death is the catalyst for Red going rogue after escaping Garrick, starting a manhunt to avenge her death. I imagine a flood of blood will be unleashed in her name come January.

Merle Dixon(Walking Dead)-While I always felt Merle was entertaining and caused interesting drama and conflict I never ever in my wildest dreams thought we'd come to actually, gulp, like Merle. While he was still himself, and always would be, he chose his Brother over his bigotry and slowly immersed with the group. I knew he wouldn't last forever, but that didn't stop his death from stabbing me in the heart, not only for Daryl, but the ally and friend Merle could have been.

Boyd and Erica(Teen Wolf)- i can't even really tell you why. Maybe it was because they'd both felt so alone and finally felt they belonged, or because Erica died a "Hero's death" by attacking their captors, leading to her end, but i didn't realize how much i adored them until they were gone.

Abigail(Hannibal)-i guess i don't really miss the character so much as i feel guilty. From the start, i thought she'd not only participated in her father's killings, but enjoyed them. That final scene with Hannibal before he kills her, however, proved that she did not. Unfortunately, Hannibal figured it out as well.

Hershel(Walking Dead)-Again, one we probably all saw coming as soon as he lost his leg, but he was truly the moral center of the group, a second father to all. I believe that, more than anything, will be missed the most. RIP Hershel.

Etta Bishop's death was ridiculously too early in the season and from what I saw wasn't this huge rallying cry for the masses but only those the closest to her.

I'm sure most deaths are from vampire based / horror shows. Bonnee in TVD was resurrected in a sense so doesn't officially count to me.

2013 The Reaper Year. For me the biggest TV character death is:

Justin / Luther
Walter and Hank / Breaking Bad
Hershel / The Walking Dead
Joss Carter / Person of Interest
Clay and Tara / Sons of Anarchy
Kevin Tran / Supernatural
Rumpelstiltskin / Once Upon A Time
Brody / Homeland
Ryan / Nikita

what shocked me was Brian Griffin, Heather Brooks,
what made me sad was Adele Webber
Finn Hudson dying hit me the hardest but only because the actor actually died and I didn't see that coming. I didn't even know about his drug addiction until I learned of his death.

The others I don't know because I haven't gotten the time to watch the shows -.-

A HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE SLIDES?????????????? Holy fuck.

Wait. WHAAAAT? They killed off Sharon Gless on B/N? I know the show ended and I didn't watch it, except for the few moments I happened to catch her............but holy fuck.

They killed off Laura Linney in The Big C (no, didn't watch it, too depressing)? Not a very good advert for a cure for cancer. But hey, this IS fucking lumberjacking Showtime we're talking about, and THEY DID LET DEXTER LIVE, the fucking dickwads.

And holy fuck ----------- how are there any shows left? Everyone's been killed off. Glad I don't watch any of these shows. GOT looks to be a bloodbath. That wasn't a real wolf, was it? They didn't really kill off a pig, did they? At least I know the cow is fake.

Unborn Baby Stark, Theon's Junk? - you guys are hilarious.

To paraphrase Dorothy, I'll miss Richard the most of all, even though I didn't watch B/E. And Justin Ripley, ooooph man that hurt. Now Luther I watched, that was a good show.

Holy fuck, lots of actors out of a job. Is it any wonder the youts in America are inured to blood and gore and violence.

But fucking Dexter they let fucking live. Go fucking figure, fuck you Showtime, and fuck you Dexter.

So many sad deaths
Tommy from Arrow
Joss from POI
Steve Gomez (as I really don't think either Walt or Hank's death were that sad - they were destined to die)
Game of Thrones - red wedding. The most sad death was that of Robb I think because of the way he went.
And wow a lot of people died in Teen Wolf this year - good thing the most important stayed alive (well came back anyway).

Joss Carter, Hershel Greene, Etta Bishop, the 11th Doctor. There were some other deaths this year, but these were the most shocking to me

Hank and Steve Gomez from Breaking Bad, Matthew and Sybil from Downton, Brian from family guy. I didn't look at the list of GoT characters that died as I haven't watched the latest season, but I'm pretty sure half those deaths are awful as well.
The Merlin finale aired last year in England but not America so Arthur and Gwaine weren't on last years list and I'm really upset they weren't included this year. I watched that episode a year ago and I'm still depressed.
