The British Series Update: Vera, Titanic & More

With American Upfront announcements hogging the limelight it’s easy to miss TV updates from home. British broadcasters have been just as busy (OK, maybe a little less so) renewing, commissioning and cancelling programmes recently. Here’s a handy list to keep you up-to-date on them all...

Kidnap and Ransom (ITV)... Trevor Eve will return as international hostage negotiator Dominic King for a second season.

Lip Service (BBC Three)... Filming has begun on the lesbian drama's second season.

Mad Dogs (Sky1)... The second season of this dark holiday thriller will, shockingly, pick up where the first left off.

Sherlock (BBC One)... The BAFTA-winning series' second three-part season began filming at the start of May.

Shipwrecked (Channel 4)... A new series of the reality island show airs later this year.

Vera (ITV)... A surprisingly quick renewal has been granted to Brenda Blethyn’s new crime drama. Some believe this will prompt similar decisions for Mr Whicher and Case Sensitive.

Wild at Heart (ITV)... The seventh season was filmed in August, but won't air until 2013.

Glee (Sky)... When the musical series returns for its third season it will air on Sky, not Channel 4. The satellite broadcaster outbid the terrestrial channel and revealed the deal on May 17.

The Killing (US) (Channel 4)... The American remake of the popular Scandinavian drama makes its way to the UK.

Black Mirror (Channel 4)... This mini-series, created by Dead Set’s Charlie Brooker, consists of three standalone episodes. Each one gives a satirical look at techno-paranoia in the modern age.

Cop Squad (Sky1)... This reality series sounds a lot like Police Camera Action. In it, the police Cambridgeshire police force are followed on night patrols.

Coup (Channel 4)... This four-part political thriller explores the relationship between the government and the banks.

Discovered by Katie Price (Sky Living)... Yes, Katie Price has another TV show. This time she’ll be looking for talent to sign up to her new model agency.

Drugs Live (Channel 4)... People will take various recreational drugs under “strict clinical conditions” on TV to demonstrate their effects to the viewing public.

Fast Freddie, The Widow and Me (ITV1)... Laurence Fox plays a narrow-minded car salesman whose perspective is challenged when a community service order makes him work in a hospice. This is a one-off drama.

Happy Families (Channel 4)... This British animation hopes to rival popular American ones. It follows the lives of a dysfunctional family and is created by the art team behind Family Guy and Futurama.

Red or Black? (ITV1)... Ant and Dec present Simon Cowell’s latest TV venture, in which thousands of people will be whittled down via numerous 50/50 choices for the chance to win £1 million.

Sealed Bid (Channel 4)... This property show follows the house-selling process, from the revamp to the exchange process.

Spy (Sky1)... A new comedy series starring Darren Boyd about a single father who turns secret agent to impress his kid.

The Marriage Ref(ITV1)... The American panel show comes to the UK, with Dermot O’Leary as the host. In it “disputes between real-life couples” will be explored and judged. Nice.

The Devil’s Dinner Party (Sky Atlantic)... A psychological prime-time gameshow that tests contestants’ “self-awareness” by asking them awkward questions about themselves.

Titanic (ITV1)... From Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes comes a new period drama about those who sailed on the Titanic.

Taggart (ITV1)... The long-running crime drama has been murrrrderrred.
