The CW 2012-2013 Video Preview: Watch Clips From Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, and More

Now that we've gotten all the boring CW scheduling stuff out of the way, it's time for the video previews we've all been waiting for: the sexy young-adult fare of The CW! This year we have doctors, the '80s, and a dude who looks like Robin Hood to get excited about. Take a look at these videos and search for that new show you're too embarrassed to tell your friends you watch!

Beauty and the Beast

The CW's pitch: Detective Catherine Chandler is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. Several years earlier, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Catherine would have been killed too, but someone—or something—saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn’t an animal that attacked the assassins...it was human. Years have passed, and Catherine is a strong, confident, capable police officer, working alongside her equally talented partner, Tess. While investigating a murder, Catherine discovers a clue that leads her to a handsome doctor named Vincent Keller, who was reportedly killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Catherine learns that Vincent is actually still alive and that it was he who saved her many years before. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years to guard his secret—when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses. Catherine agrees to protect his identity in return for any insight he may have into her mother’s murder. Thus begins a complex relationship between Catherine and Vincent, who are powerfully drawn to each other yet understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them.

Our take: This may surprise you, but I think this looks terrible. And I'd watch Kristin Kreuk strangle kittens.

The Carrie Diaries

The CW's pitch: It’s 1984, and life isn’t easy for 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw. Since their mother passed away, Carrie’s younger sister Dorritt is more rebellious than ever, and their father Tom is overwhelmed with the responsibility of suddenly having to care for two teenage girls on his own. Carrie’s friends—sweet, geeky Mouse, sarcastic and self-assured Maggie and sensitive Walt—make life bearable, but a suburban life in Connecticut isn’t doing much to take her mind off her troubles. And even though the arrival of a sexy new transfer student named Sebastian brings some excitement to Carrie’s world, she is struggling to move on from her grief. So when Tom offers Carrie the chance to intern at a law firm in Manhattan, she leaps at the chance. Carrie’s eyes are opened wide at the glamour and grit of New York City—and when she meets Larissa, the style editor for Interview magazine, she’s inspired by the club culture and unique individuals that make up Larissa’s world. Carrie’s friends and family may have a big place in her heart, but she’s fallen in love for the first time with the most important man in her life—Manhattan.

Our take: Coming soon, we hope!

Arrow

The CW's pitch: After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow—a vigilante—to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be—flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle—while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on—and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

Official Trailer:

Our take: Rule number one of self-made superhero shows and movies: Find an old warehouse to work out in and make weapons! Also make sure there are a bunch of computers. Evil tennis balls beware, Arrow is coming! Pretty standard superhero stuff here.

Cult

The CW's pitch: Investigative journalist Jeff Sefton has learned to laugh off his brother Nate’s relentless string of obsessions, especially his latest rant that a hit TV show intends to harm him. However, when his brother mysteriously disappears, Jeff takes Nate’s paranoia seriously, and in the process uncovers the dark underworld of the TV show Cult and its rabid fans. The only person who seems willing to help Jeff with his investigation is Skye, a young research assistant for Cult, who has also started to grow suspicious of the increasingly dark happenings surrounding the show. The fictitious show, centered on the cat-and-mouse game between charismatic cult leader Billy Grimm and LAPD detective Kelly Collins, has become an obsession for its viewers—and now some of its devotees seem to be taking their fixation to deadly extremes in the real world. As Jeff and Skye dig deeper into the fan world, they discover that the gruesome plot twists on television are much more than fantasy for some very unfortunate people. The hardcore fans of Cult would kill to see what happens next

Official Trailer:

Not yet available. Come on, CW!

Our take: You'll know when we see it!

Emily Owens, M.D.

The CW's pitch: At long last, Emily Owens feels like she is an actual grown-up. She can finally put her high school days as the geeky-girl-with-flop-sweats behind her; she’s graduated from medical school and is now a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, where she’ll have the chance to work with world-famous cardiologist Dr. Gina Beckett—and where, not-so-coincidentally, her med-school crush Will Rider is also an intern. So why does everyone keep warning her that the hospital is just like high school? Emily soon finds out the hard way—her high school nemesis, the gorgeous, popular Cassandra Kopelson, is also just starting out at Denver Memorial, and it seems like they’re rivals all over again—not only as surgical interns, but for Will’s attention. Fellow intern Tyra Granger warns Emily that the cliques at Denver Memorial are all too familiar: the jocks have become orthopedic surgeons; the mean girls are in plastics; the rebels are in the ER, and Tyra has her own awkward place as the principal’s kid—her father is the chief resident. Emily’s the new kid all over again, and it’s just as awkward as high school. Only this time around, Emily will have to balance the personal and emotional turmoil of social politics with the high-stakes world of life-and-death medical decisions. At least she has fellow intern Tyra and nerdy-but-cute resident Micah, to count on as friends. Emily is growing to realize that although she may be a geek, she may also grow to be a great doctor, flop sweats and all.

Official Trailer:

Our take: Is Emily a cardiologist? Because she just gave this schedule a transplant of heart! This plucky little doc looks like the perfect person to root for as her high school nightmares follow her to her professional life.

So they want to do Beauty and The Beast...that begs the question why their names have to be Catherine and Vincent? Nothing come close to the original show. My curiosity my last one episode. The only show I like in CW is Supernatural.

Come on people...everyone thought the big bang theory was stupid when it first started ....but look at it now...it is one of the most watched shows on tv... give beauty and the beast a chance!!!!

Will check out Emily Owens MD, Carrie Diaries and Arrow, but Beauty and the Beast looks silly. I guess we will have to see about them when fall comes around.

I'll give them a chance, only because CW has some of my favourite shows.

The Secret Circle and Ringer got cancelled cause no one watched them (they were low-rated on The CW, that's bad) so why do fans think their losses are going to result in some epic decline in viewership? If you guys had that kind of power, your show would have been renewed.

The only one I'll come close to watch is "Arrow".

Arrow looks good, hopefully they can afford to make it action packed since he has no superpowers or expensive cars or planes .... i remember smallville could never afford any long term fights because too much special effects was expensive....
Reply

You shouldn't touch the classics, that's my opinion. Redo Beauty and the Beast mixing it with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide PLUS The Hulk? Definitively NO. Not watching it. Thank God I have Beauty and the Beast on DVD. Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman RULE!
Reply

I wouldn't call Beauty and the Beast a classic.

"Redo Beauty and the Beast mixing it with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide PLUS The Hulk?" yeah and a touch of a werewolf... LOL that's what I'd call a Frankenstein series.

Arrow was the only one I thought sounded okay, and the video preview hasn't harmed that thought.

The rest? Bleh.

Flag
if they can keep Arrow like an actual super hero show and focus on good vs evil more than him having girl problems...then it will be good
Reply
Flag
well I'll say I would give a shot to Arrow and the only reason I would see Emily Owens M.D. is cause of Justin Hartley aside from that looks kind of sucky
Reply
Flag
The cult sounds interesting

Reply
Flag
is anyone else upset that Justin Hartley didn't get the Green Arrow role? I don't know who's decision that was but I think he did a kick-ass job on Smallville. I see he's in a movie soon and had some bit roles recently so I hope he's happy.
Reply
Flag
There was no way he was ever going to get it. The whole point of the show was the re-create Oliver's origin story and seperate it from Smallville as much as they possible could. They couldn't really cast the exact same Green Arrow from Smallville and say "oh, but it has nothing to do with Smallville"
Reply
Flag
I was pissed that Justin Hartley wasn't chosen for Arrow. Do you think he was approached and rejected the job, or didnt even bother auditioning for the role?
Reply
Flag
This is embarrassing... At least they've got Supernatural.

Totally agree they look awful. Can't believe TSC was given up for this.

Emily Owens!!!! But this new name sucks hard, why did you drop "First Cut", CW?

But, but who cares? I'm in for Jack Coleman!

Finally the rule fo the evil tennis balls will come to an end, right after a training scene with some (sort of) cool music.

So "The Secret Circle" is being replaced by "Beauty and the Beast"? Which looked like the worst show they are offering this year. Hold on to "Supernatural" and "The Vampire Diaries" because everything else looks pretty pathetic.
Reply
Flag
Do teenagers really think like will forever be an extension of high school? Who would buy such a silly premise? Emily Owens is made for teenagers in high school or adults who are mentally still in high school. The CW seems to think they are really that narrow-minded.
Reply
Flag
Wow, the descriptions seem even more boring than I expected.. :(

How could they cancel TSC for shows like that??
Reply
Flag
I liked Ringer and The Secret Circle alot just like all of you, but it's gone and there not coming back. Does'nt do any use to complain about it after the decision has been made. That was supposed to be done before the schedule was released if people wanted to petition and save a show. I am looking forward to Beauty and the Beast, Arrow and Cult tho. From the 2 previews I saw from Beauty and the Beast and Arrow they seem decent. I love Kristin Kreuk so I am willing to give it a chance for that reason. I heard good things about Arrow so I will give it a chance. I can't wait to see promos for Cult tho!!! That one sounds cool. Why do people hate on Beauty and the Beast so much? Have you seen a preview of The Neighbors on ABC? That looks horrible! lol.

Big mistake moving Supernatural! Also I'm still extremely ticked about the casting of Arrow! :(

WTF cancelled Ringer and The Secret Circle and now have a crappy line up ... Shows how f*cked up the CW network are....just coz they dont like how the ratings are of the shows they cancel it and look for other series to basically do the same thing. Why not pick up a series and lets say midway through the series, if you are not planning to bring back the series, f*cking tell the writers to give an ending to the series! None of this cliffhanger crap and disappointing the fans! CW SUCKS!!!!

I hope the CW read this coz they need to know that giving cliffhangers to ending series just makes them look unprofessional and that they don't have any considerations to the fans. Self centered pricks - always thinking of themselves and not the fans of the show!

Total Pissed Off!!!!!!!!! - Thumbs up if you agree (and if someone can send this to the CW and add to it Please Do!!!)

they have cut TSC for the crap ???

Please bring back Ringer if your planning on making us watch some of these....

LMFAO!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS, CW?!?! Are you actually TRYING to make me hate you more? WTF is THIS? Just on principle, I would have hated any show you picked to replace The Secret Circle (with the possible exception of a show where people throw rotten vegetables at the Kardashians....and even THEN it would have been a "maybe"). But THIS?! THIS?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?! Enjoy the Hindenburg-esque ratings plummet next season. Just.....wow.........

Beauty and the Beast pitch meeting: What's really hot right now? Thanks to the Twilight craze, vampires and werewolves! But everyone has a vampire show or a werewolf show. So what if we were to do something so crazy that no one else have ever thought to do it - combine the two! That's right... our super handsome teen heartthrob is half vampire / half werewolf - and only the best of both! And just so he's not super creepy all the time, he transforms into this 'Beast" whenever he wants. Oh, and because we recycle our stars, that cute girl from Smallville will play a street smart detective and they form an unstoppable crime-solving duo. Yeah, we didn't think that through very well. We'll call it a remake of Beauty and the Beast, but really it's just another way to rip off Twilight. What do you think??

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??!!!!!!!!! The CW cancelled The Secret Circle for this crap!!! All shows make me wanna throw something!!! I saw Justin Hartley but was gobsmacked that he wasnt in this article for the main character in Arrow, which is the same character he played in Smallville!!!! WTF??!!!

Shame on you CW, shame on you!!!

I'll watch the Arrow just for that chest! phwar! Emily Owens sounds good but I'm not sure.

ugh! Beauty and the Beast looks badly directed. Sad, because the source material was great.

Beauty and the Beast is a copy of the 90's tv show of the same name, they've even copied it down to the characters names! Seriously just cut the bull and do a remake
Reply
Flag
Not a copy. Something that just maintained names and vaguely the idea of a beast. And mixed it with The Hulk. ARGH
Reply
Flag
Um it is a remake? Not a copy...
Reply
Flag
Actually, it isn't a remake. No noble Lion Man, no underground society, and Kristin Kreuk is a no-nonsense cop instead of a rich DA investigator. Really? And it definitely isn't a copy. Just the same character names and title.

BTW Emily M.D. sounds familiar to The German show doctor's Diary (http://www.tv.com/shows/doctors-diary/)...

which is a mix of ally mcbeal and grey anatomy and is pretty good for something german.

Will watch Emily M.D. at least two eps :)

Beauty and the Beast looks dreadful - could possibly be fun Romeo and Juliet fare for the teens, I suppose (and the soccer moms - what's up w/ that?).

Carrie Diaries - doesn't seem particularly interesting. Hard to judge w/out a trailer - I suspect the entire show rests on whether or not Carrie is a charming and ambitious ingenue or an annoying brat.

Arrow. My sister will be thrilled - she loves these kinds of shows. I don't hate them. They'll have a hard time making him as cool as Hawkeye from the Avengers, though.

Cult. That one could swing either way. A genuine, serialized show about a vast conspiracy and raving tv lunatics? It'll either be awesome or flop.

Emily MD. Doesn't Meridith do an internal monologue on Grey's? Seems almost like a reboot. That show was a huge hit though so maybe. Not for me but ... maybe. The whole 'the world is always high school' theory is just depressing though.

I would like to see a preview for cult besides saying that one won't make it, plus it has Alaric so I have to give it a shot. No more Carrie Bradshaw, she could only be played by Sarah at this point and I honestly don't care about her high school life. I probably will give the doctor show a start , but honestly these synopsis suck so why cancel secret circle when it was getting so good!
Reply
Flag
Wow! People complain about The CW Network way to much here... I am not even replying back to those people with a message. It's not even worth it for one at all what's so ever.

It looks like and appears Arrow and Beauty and the Beast is whole alot better match on The CW than Ringer and The Secret Circle ever did on their schedule. Beauty and the Beast looks 10 times whole alot better than The Secret Circle and the Arrow looks 10 times whole alot better than Ringer.

I will most definitely be watching Arrow and Beauty and the Beast for sure.... Hand down for the people doesn't have true spirit.

Did you watch the secret circle at all? It had a slow stretch but the final 4-5 episodes of the season really picked up.

why do so many shows have to center around the characters being police? i mean, it's cool to have cop shows...but my god it's getting old. i couldn't get into grim for that reason, and now beauty and the beast..i was interested until i read she was a cop.. it could be good..but ugh .. it's a premise that is getting really overdone..
Reply
Flag
Grimm took me until the past few episodes to really get into it and even though he is a cop its so much more. I just had a hard time watching because of all the background but you really needed it to get where they are now and it's been really good.
Reply
Flag
He's a better cop than a Grimm on that show. Bugs me he never seems to care about what his aunt left him in that trailer unless he needs to, or the script forces him. Then again, he relies too much on Munroe anyway.
Reply
Flag
What's disturbing is that they're ripping off (i.e., rebooting) the original Beauty & The Beast with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. Characters named Catherine Chandler and Vincent? Ugh...
Reply

I'll only be checking out Arrow it looks better than I though it would but wow that Beauty and the Beast clip was awful.

I don't watch the CW, but I'm a big superhero geek so I'm definitively giving Arrow a shot. I hate clips, I want to see a real trailer!
