The CW Cancels Hart of Dixie After Four Seasons, Axes The Messengers, Too

Sometimes knowing bad news is coming doesn't make it any easier to take. After months of dodging the question of Zoe Hart's (Rachel Bilson) future in Bluebell, The CW has officially canceled Hart of Dixie after four seasons of wacky, small town shenanigans, Variety reports. In semi-related news, The CW also officially bid farewell to its blink-and-you'll-miss-that-it-ever-existed series The Messengers, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

Hart of Dixie's fourth and final season was cut short by Bilson's real life pregnancy, but series creator Leila Gerstein crafted a wonderful final arc for the lovable, if unhinged population of Blubell, Alabama. March's cheerful series finale tied up every single loose end with a song-and-dance number that would have felt contrived on any other show but felt perfectly at home within the confines of the show's sunny disposition. But even before Zoe and Wade (Wilson Bethel) walked into the metaphorical sunset with their newborn baby, the writing was on the wall.

Our Spidey senses first began tingling last October, when a few ominous tweets from Bethel and his co-star Scott Porter left us questioning whether Season 4 would be the series' last. At the time, The CW insisted that no decision had been made. After some concerning tweets from Gerstein ahead of the finale in March, the network again refused to confirm the series' cancellation, which tormented fans of the show. It's a shame that the network dragged this out for so long, but at least there's finally closure. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go rewatch that final dance number and cry into the cheapest white wine I can find at the Dixie Stop.

Will you miss Hart of Dixie? Did you watch The Messengers?

I know. I am pissed that they cancelled The Messengers. Good GOD, they could at least give it a damn chance. I really got into that show too. At least it was only on season 1, I guess, but still, it ticks me off. LOL

I'm ok with Messengers getting canned. Especially since I still think they should have just kept the Tomorrow People instead. Yes I'm still bummed from last year lol

I went against my better judgement and watched the first couple of episodes of The Messengers after saying I would wait (couldn't sleep, so I thought why not?). Not surprised it got canned so quickly.

Never heard of the Messengers, but I do love Hart of Dixie. It was charming and amusing-- a worthy successor of Gilmore Girls, in many ways. It'll be missed.

Hart of Dixie had a good run on The CW considering it was very different from everything else they've got on the network, it was nice that the writers technically got a final season to wrap things up as well.

The Messengers, on the other hand, didn't seem like it had much of a chance. Friday nights during mid-season - as if there was ever going to be an audience.

I know. They need to get rid of some of that stupid comedy crap and keep The Messengers. I hope they at least have the decency to wrap it up with a decent conclusion.

&It;'s a shame that the network dragged this out for so long

The ratings always left no question that it was going to be cancelled. It's also the case that networks will never say a show is going to be cancelled while there are still episodes left to air. If anyone was hurt because of this it was just because of wishful thinking.

Awww man! I was watching The Messengers. It was actually pretty fast paced. I was looking forward to seeing how it would turn out. Although the devil sounded like Rogelio!

The Messengers started off promising but was swerving toward kinda being a bit too preachy and the plots was everywhere. Best it lost its wings before it fell from network heaven.

Damn it! I liked the messengers. They should at least run 4 episodes before they make a decision. Some shows start off slow and end up really good by the end.

Good luck with cancelling The 100. LOL That show is way awesome. Plus, it's already going to season 3. It's usually the first season that really decides the cancellation. LOL Season 1 is the season where they truly decide on cancelling it, since it is always the slowest season. haha

The Messengers was handicapped by a variety of issues, caused by bot its writers and actors. None of the characters feel particularly likeable or admirable, and that says a lot when they are literally angels. Furthermore, none of the characters feel like they are well rounded and realistic, rather they are just a gaggle of clichéd, unoriginal beings. I just heard a review of The Messengers on Antenna Heads that highlights a lot of this show’s problems, Check it out!

I liked Hart of Dixie even though I live in Alabama and that wasn't a representation of Alabama at all.. but I am kind of glad it ended and didn't just drag drama out and get cancelled.

I'm a little surprised about The Messengers just because it started so recently and has had no time to grow into anything yet.. but I won't really miss it.

Loved HOD but the season's finale was too good not to be a series finale so now that's official but Zoey & Wade are together and all the others are happy too, so we can still cheer up :)

Not surprised about The Messengers. (I even put "Yeah, it's dead, Jim" in last week's FTW.) I liked (laughed about) how the 6th angel blurts out story exposition, but seeing the "devil" guy always somewhere and smiling back at the camera & angels seemed like a "big miss" drama-wise.

Oh, well, for "crazy" series we still have Salem, and we don't have long to wait for Under the Dome, maybe Zoo (whose previews remind me of Helix season one for some reason), and possibly a skin-on-pavement skidding to a stop experience with Extant.

The Messengers had this Heroes feel to it. I guess The CW anticipated the same outcome, and just cut the cord.

@TannerScott7054 It's not an opinion. Also, The CW does not go on talk shows to cancel their programs. The actors and the show's creator have spoken a great deal about the end of the show, but The CW would not publicly confirm the cancellation until today. That's why I reported it today. That's why all entertainment outlets reported it today.

Forever just started here in France to 8 million viewers which is a lot for the country, so France might save it, but I don't like that show at all, barely made through the first episode in September!

I saw France mentioned elsewhere, but episode 3 was down in the 5 millions, which is only about 1 million more than its lowest point in the US. I think foreign $$$$ would require many other countries having great ratings. Still, I'm hoping...
