The CW On the Future of Supernatural, an Arrow and Constantine Crossover, Jane the Virgin's Emmy Snub, and More

The CW is coming off one of its most successful seasons to date. The Flash is the most-watched and highest-rated series ever in the history of the network, Jane the Virgin brought critical acclaim and a Golden Globe, and the network's total viewership has risen for the third straight year.

CW President Mark Pedowitz bravely stood before reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Tuesday to discuss these things and more, including the future of Supernatural, possible Supergirl crossovers, and what the hell the network was thinking when it decided to develop a dystopian version of Little Women. Here's what he had to say:

On the future of the Winchesters:

A couple somewhere sold their souls at a crossroads, because Supernatural is heading into Season 11 this fall and according to Pedowitz, the series will have a home on The CW for as long as the ratings hold and stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are on board. "If the guys want to do it, we're in," he said. "They've done a terrific job and I'm very excited about the guys wanting to keep on doing it. They bring fresh enthusiasm to it each week."

On the Arrow and Constantine crossover:

When NBC axed Constantine earlier this year, Arrow star Stephen Amell proposed the idea of a potential crossover between the two shows in an effort to save it. Now that idea has come to fruition, because Matt Ryan, who starred as DC Comics character John Constantine in the ill-fated drama, will reprise his role in Arrow's fifth episode, titled “Haunted.” Pedowitz gave credit to Warner Bros. for making the crossover happen. "Luckily, one of our parent companies, Warner Bros., was a production company for Constantine," he said. "We worked with them and it's a great one-shot episode."

Arrow executive producer Mark Guggenheim released a statement following the announcement. "We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow," he said. "Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series."

On whether we'll ever see Supergirl on Arrow or The Flash:

"I leave that to [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and his team," said Pedowitz. "If they can make that work that's great, if not, that's fine. We're open to crossovers... but that's Greg's call because he understands his shows better than I do."

On whether Beauty and the Beast will ever return to fall:

Basically, no. Pedowitz prefers to air the Kristen Kreuk drama in the summer, because it gives the network a foundation for original summer programming. "One of our stated goals for the network is to have year-round programming. We're doing more and more. Having Beauty and the Beast gives us scripted programming for the summer... [and] I plan to keep it there."

And speaking of summer programming, Pedowitz announced that the network is developing an Americanized hour-long version of the just concluded British import Dates. He cited the show's quality and its format as one of the reasons The CW took a shot on it and thought it was unique enough to develop their own version of the series.

On Jane the Virgin's Emmy snub:

Like many critics, Pedowitz was disappointed when Jane the Virgin was snubbed by the Emmys last month. But he was more disappointed for series creator Jennie Snyder-Urman and star Gina Rodriguez, who he said is working hard to earn the nomination next year "that they deserved" this year.

On that crazy, weird, and crazy-weird adaptation of Little Women:

Pedowitz compared the public's reaction to the news that the network is developing a gritty, hyper-stylized, dystopian adaptation of Little Women to when the network announced its intent to adapt a series about a pregnant virgin. "It's a pitch, it's an attempt to do something different. If it works, great, if it doesn't, we took a shot. We'll see what happens when the script comes in."

On whether there will be more DC Comics-related projects at the network:

In January, Pedowitz told reporters that the network was in preliminary discussions regarding a spin-off of Arrow and The Flash. That spin-off eventually became DC's Legends of Tomorrow, which will debut at midseason. On Tuesday, when asked if the network is planning to develop any future DC Comics projects, Pedowitz said the network is happy with the series they have at this time and that there are no plans to create another spin-off. He also noted that the network is pleased with the success of iZombie, which is an adaptation of a Vertigo comic book series. "We're very proud of what Rob [Thomas] and Diane [Ruggiero-Wright] have done there," he said.

On the future of The Vampire Diaries without Nina Dobrev:

Joking that the network has found success with shows revolving around brothers (in addition to Supernatural, the network also has The Originals, which is centered around the Mikaelson family), Pedowitz said that he is happy with the series reset that The Vampire Diaries began in Season 6 that will allow the drama to focus more prominently on the Salvatore brothers (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley). He also praised the work Nina Dobrev did for six years and said that she is welcome back anytime she wants to come back.

You guys realize what this means for Arrow/Constantine right?

I smell Cyrus Gold being resurrected as Solomon Grundy, thereby making his huge debut, DC comics magician based characters are going to make an awesome selection. I'm glad that they are doing this because it set-ups powerful story-lines worth pursuing.

I'm thrilled about the Constantine crossover, but still bummed that it's still canceled. Why can't the show find a home on the CW?!

I suspect mostly because Constantine is too old for the network. And they've already got their share of supernatural shows.

Good ridance, Nina Dobrev.I hated her and her complascent character in that series and it was a reason why I stopped watching.
Elated at Constantine making it on Arrow.I hope this will open the door for a more constant ( yes, I did, I said it hehehehehe) return of his character.
Supernatural cannot end before we see God. They owe us that much for our patience.

The news about Matt Ryan's Consantine on Arrow got me so excited.
I really loved him in Constantine, even though the show was kinda mediocre.

The only problem is that i just realised this won't be sent until november which is 3 months away :(

"It's a pitch, it's an attempt to do something different. If it works, great, if it doesn't, we took a shot. We'll see what happens when the script comes in."

I really like that statement, and the sentiment behind it. Like almost everyone, I'm very skeptical about this adaptation of Little Women (but partly because I've lost faith in awesome, worldbending sorts of mashups promises, that fall flat before the four episde test has run its course. I am blaming YOU, Terra Nova), but this attitude makes me have a little bit more of that faith. After all, Jane the Virgin is now one of my favorite shows.

I look forward to the crossover, I like the Constantine and wish it had been given more time. However, does anyone else think that a Constantine - Supernatural crossover could be a ton of fun? :) I realize they would have to avoid dealing with their key differences on how angles and demons are viewed but still.

I wish that Constantine hadn't been cancelled having seen the Lucifer pilot- seemed like logical crossover territory- moreso than Arrow. But everything will crossover with everything, eventually.

So would this mean that the world will become more and more Open to the Use of Magic (arrow/flash)? Because then we might see Dr. Fate, or maybe just the host for Dr. Fate to explain things about Magic. Maybe have Zombie Solemn show up for that episode to give the arrow Magical Arrows?!

I didn't love Constantine the show, but I did enjoy Matt Ryan's portrayal of the titular character, so I'm glad to see it being reprised. But I'm wary of it being on Arrow. Ehhh. Hopefully their writing and execution proves me wrong, but the tones of their shows seem significantly different and I can see John Constantine being totally lame on Arrow, lol.

What about a crossover of Arrow and The 100? Oliver has after all good experience from surviving in the island.
The Flash was a great surprise and I put it high above Arrow. I´m looking forward to season 2.

Magic is actually a pretty huge part of the DC lore. In the 90's Green Arrow's best bud Hal Jordan was literally the right hand of God after he died. Green Arrow himself was also dead and IIRC was brought back via supernatural means. That being said, with the exception of Smallville, it's usually never touched on, unless the show is specifically about magic in one way or another. Under normal circumstances I'd have my doubts, but eh, given the way they've slowly introduced the concept of meta humans and advanced technology, it doesn't seem that weird. I mean, keep in mind this episode will be going up around the same time as Flash is dealing with all that whacky time travel and wormhole nonsense just a few cities over.

Probably not, I'm actually impressed they managed to get the rights at all. I just don't think the CW has a big enough budget to outright save the show, let alone find a spot for it. Especially since it'd be viewed as a huge risk given the ratings issue. At best, we might see more of the character and maybe in a few years they'll take another stab at it.

It could be a back route way into a new series.

More likely if the actor up to it, he will be a character that can freely roam across all of DC show and link them up, rather than have Felicity play this role, she can then go back to being Arrow backroom office staff, on off on off lover.

It's being reported they are also developing a Friday the 13th series based on the slasher films, not the cursed artifact series.

I'm not too thrilled with Scream and gave up on Pretty Little Liars some time back and I see this as a similar waste of dragged out time.

Don't get to excited about the Possible upcoming Friday the 13th series, Its report-ably being done by the CW network and is listed as being a drama series. (I guess they thought they couldn't have ruined the franchise enough already) although at least it isn't being done by MTV. From what I'm aware of the series it isn't even going to be about Jason killing many people, but merely about a detective who's trying to find his brother who was tied up investigating Jason's former victims. Almost as if the writers had seen the Friday the 13th reboot and thought that they would replace Jared Padalecki's character with someone looking for his brother and not his sister.

Hey, how come no ones talking about the three early released pilots, Blindspot, Lucifer, and Minority Report? Saw all three, and was okay with all of them. Blindspot was the standout, and Lucifer was better than I expected it to be. Minority Report was okay too.

Yeah, I was surprisingly okay with all 3 too. Maybe it was due to low expectations, since I thought all 3 would be pretty damn bad.

Minority Report was the least fun, and I'll partly blame Meagan Good for that because I had to keep seeing her poorly-executed plastic surgery

Lucifer may have been my fav, with Blindspot also being a pleasant surprise.

Haven't got to Blindspot yet, but Minority Report was incredibly dull so unless they incinerated the pilot that was leaked fired the writing staff and recast every role I don't see it improving. The only upside is that it acts as a mild sedative, so no need to by sleeping pills, the down side to that is that people will fall asleep and not turn over giving the show decent ratings. The Lucifer pilot worked, Tom Ellis was charming and funny all while been a complete ass in the nicest possible way, but he's the Devil so what else are you expecting. And as they've recast the part of the Detective's ex with Kevin Alejandro that can only be a good thing.

Good, somebody--a few sombodies--talking about the shows, rather than the politics involved in their early release, or lack of reviews. I brought it up to see what everyone thought about the actual shows, and don't really care why they were there for us to get an early look-see.

I've been thinking the same thing! I first saw the pilots on "certain sites" a few days back, and I've been waiting for TV.com (and other sites) to talk about the early releases/leaks... but I guess the news isn't discussion worthy.

I also thought they were all decent.

these pilots are released with purpose (I don't believe that they leaked, because they are with high quality and finished - not like the 4 episodes of Doctor Who from year ago) - I'm sure that the networks want to see reactions, comments, reviews etc.

This is what I was thinking as well (especially when the Supergirl one was released way back). The quality is waaaaaaay too high, and it seems to be fully edited. So yea, I don't know much about the process... but you'll have a hard time convincing me all of these "leaks" were actual leaks.

I think I'll be really happy to see Matt Ryan's Constantine, even if just once more. The jury is still out about seeing more Arrow. So many people stopped watching during season 3. It wasn't quite as bad as Sleepy Hollow season 2 for me, but let it be known that I'm only committing to watching 5 episodes of Arrow, just to get to the Constantine crossover.

A crossover with a show that's been cancelled. That's probably the first time it's ever been done.

If they're doing crossovers with CW shows, they HAVE to do a Constantine/Supernatural crossover. It would be perfect. It's the sort of idea that could carry them another five years.

Though we should all try to get more friends watching. Better ratings for season 3 will help get us a season 4.

I'm sorry, what?!? Constantine is coming to Starling City? Oie!

I was awfully disappointed Constantine didn't get the opportunity it deserved, but an Arrow "crossover"? Yeah...umm...no. The law of diminishing returns was demonstrated last season with the Arrow/Flash crossovers and that's already going to increase by 50% with Legends of Tomorrow, so now we're going to throw in another gimmick by merging two completely different worlds? Oh Arrow {head shake}

Instead of some stunt, it would be really nice if in the production meetings somebody said, "Hey, do you know what would be really cool...writing a thoughtful and coherent story and sticking with it through the entire season"

Probably shouldn't get my hopes up though.

When it comes to Arrow? Ya, probably. To me, it is hands down the most disappointing show I can ever remember watching. A solid first season, garbage 2nd and even worse 3rd. I watch it now mostly just to see how bad it can possibly get.

There aren't many shows that I watch because they're bad, but Arrow is definitely at the top of a short list and because it's so disappointing, I don't feel bad about dumping on it.

Most other shows I comment on around here are quite positive, or at least fair critiques IMO.

Great to hear that NBC's version of Constantine will live on and and join the Arrow/Flash universe. Here's hoping that if the ratings are good enough they will bring him back for more, hopefully along with the rest of the cast.

If nothing else this opens the door for other magical characters to appear. Constantine was already setting the stage for The Spectre during it's run and the Helm of Naboo was present meaning Dr. Fate could have been on the Horizon.

While this might not mean a revival of the Constantine series maybe it could mean a possible Legends of Tomorrow type of show focused on the Justice League Dark with magical beings like Fate, Spectre, Zatanna, and Boston Brand, who himself has a tie to Nanda Parbat, taking part alongside Constantine.
