The CW Renews Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and 90210

Sam and Dean Winchester, Damon and Stefan Salvatore, and whoever is on 90210 will be back next year! The CW made three early renewals today, announcing new seasons of Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and 90210 for 2012-2013. Hooray and stuff!

The renewals of Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries didn't come as much of a surprise as they are two of the network's most popular series. Heck, Supernatural recently named a new showrunner (former Supernatural writer Jeremy Carver) for next year, and if there was no Season 8 that would have been pretty stupid. The Vampire Diaries has become the new face of The CW, and as long as Price is willing to photo-recap each episode, the show will continue. 90210 was the only series of the three that wasn't a lock, but it's become a big part of the network's brand since spinning off from Beverly Hills, 90210.

However, the rest of The CW's schedule still has some pretty big question marks. What's to come for The Secret Circle, Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, Ringer, and Nikita? Of those shows, Gossip Girl has the best chance at renewal, followed by Nikita. Ringer is almost certainly a goner, and The Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie are both in danger.

The CW will hold its upfront presentation on May 17, so we'll know what its 2012-2013 schedule looks like by then.

supernatural & Vampire Diaries no bad news there. love those 2 shows. They better renew Secret Circle and Ringer, although they are new shows they should be given the chance to develop their story lines. the seeds have been sewn, so let them grow.

Omg, the secret circle needs to be renewed... I'd choose that over nikita (which i never watched to be honest) or hart of dixie (which is pretty boring) :/

I think Nikita and Gossip girl should be cut.. And Im pretty bored with ANTM now days.. I think All 3 of the new shows deserve a second chance.. I would keep TVD and TCS joined on thursdays..Put Ringer with SN or put both with a new show.. 90210 and HOD together as well..

Figures - the only shows I really still watch on CW are Secret Circle (which has gotten awesome) and Ringer .... well sometimes Supernatural but they really should have pulled the plug when Sam took Lucifer to the cage.

TVD renewal was a no brainer.. and I love Supernatural, honestly I do, but it should've gone away after season 5.. everything else after that is just like CW making them into a show that's similar to the people who still hang around high school after they graduate trying to relive glory days..

I think Gossip Girl will be back, isn't next year going to be the last anyway? might as well finish.

Personally I enjoy The Secret Circle more than TVD this season actually, so I hope it gets renewed. and even though Hart of Dixie is pretty much using the typical southern stereotype for the most part (I am FROM Alabama, and it's nothing like HOD), I like Scott Porter and Rachel Bilson so I hope it comes back too.

I don't watch Ringer or Nikita so I personally don't care either way lol I'd rather one of them have been renewed instead of 90210 though, that show was pretty bad even in first season and has gone more and more downhill every episode after.

Hart of Dixie should stay. Nikita and TSC can go as far as I am concern !

Pleeeeeease CW - renew Nikita! (And move it to a better time-slot, damn it!)

I'm really hoping that Ringer will be back. Just one more season at least so they can give the show an epic ending. I really thought that this show was good. Much better than the other shows on that network.

Fans of Ringer and Nikita better start wishing real hard. I could live without a renewed Gossip Girl.

Very happy about Supernatural!

My wife and I both like Ringer, though, so I hope that show makes it.

IMO and according to the ratings here are the shows in order of danger to be cancelled, the bigger the number the bigger the danger, but we'll see:

1.The Secret Circle

2. Hart of Dixie

3. Nikita

4. Ringer

5. Gossip Girl

If we refer to the ratings the goners are definitely Ringer & GG but since it's the CW, who knows???

I just looked at the ratings of 90210 this season and its renewal totally contradicts everything I just said because they're worst than TSC HOD & Nikta but better than Ringer & GG, but wait, wasn't my point Ringer & GG are goners????

Loooks like I might be right after all :)

Ps: Of those shows I'm the least attached to Nikita & GG but it's only ratings that counts in the end, isn't it?

The Secret Circle isn't in danger. With OTH ending, Ringer dead, and HoD and Nikita both with lower average ratings than TSC, that's four slots to fill next season. TSC has had two low ratings recently, but otherwise about average for the network (which is saying something given how TVD's ratings are huge compared to the other shows on the network). If TSC is in danger, than every show on the CW is in danger.

Every show on the CW is in danger.

(Aside from the ones already renewed of course.)

Hurray and stuff for Supernatural!! Jeremy Carver wrote many of my favourite episodes, I'm so thrilled he's our new showrunner. 90210 isn't my cuppa tea, but I may have to start watching the Vampire Diaries just so I can read Price's photo-recaps.

Of the ones still up in the air, I'm rooting for Hart of Dixie. It's got a fun, sassy and quirky Gilmore Girls vibe to it, and it's the kind of show where you can pretty much start watching anytime (I didn't dive in until the middle of the season and I had no trouble following the story.) So it's the one with the most chance of gaining instead of losing audience.

Hart of Dixie is such a good show. Very underrated. Hope they renew it so more people realize how good it really is. Great cast on there!

Fantastic news! I just hope, they add The Secret Circle to that list soon!

they can't cancel the secret circle! it's one of the best new tv shows!

I hope that the will be the last season of supernatural

The show is not the same since season 4

Really 90210?? who sees this show??

I've got a better idea. Since no one is tying you to a chair and doing that Clockwork Orange thing to your eyes to force you to watch the show against your will, why don't you just not watch the show and let those of us who still love it go on watching it. There are plenty of us who do still love it: it's the second highest rated show on the network.

This is how many still watch the show by adding live viewers + 7 first days of DVR and online viewing:

Season 7.........3.0 million viewers

Season 1.........3.4 million viewers

Since online viewing figures were released in the Wall Street Journal, ratings experts have done the math and actually very few viewers have stopped watching the show in seven years, some have just switched to watching on DVR and online.

I really don't get people who think because they don't like a show anymore, no one else should like it or get to keep watching it. I could name half a dozen shows still airing that I used to really like and don't like at all anymore. You know what I do? I just stop watching them. I don't root for their cancellation or bash them online or assume that because I don't like them anymore that they're crap or act like my personal subjective opinion is a universal truth or try to ruin it for those who still enjoy it. I know the world doesn't revolve around me and that shows don't need to stop airing just because *I* don't like them anymore.

In terms of renewals, CW seems second most reliable after CBS. So I think the other shows that still not renewed are PROBABLY safe.

Now Hart of Dixie needs to be renewed. It has been really consistent quality-wise this season and it's definitely one of my favorite new shows. I would also like a final Gossip Girl season even though the last two seasons were pretty bad. But with a new showrunner next season it might get the ending it deserves, because S1+2 were great. I do watch Ringer, Nikita & TSC as well, but I don't care about them that much, I would probably give another season to TSC and cancel Nikita & Ringer.

I agree. Hart of Dixie deserves a second season. As for Gossip Girl, even though I've stopped watching somewhere during this last season, it should get a proper ending after running so long. Nikita was fun, but the exitement is gone as far as I'm concerned. So yes, cancel Nikita and Ringer and keep TSC and HoD.

Please, PLEASE let them renew The Secret Circle!! This was definitely my favorite new show this past season. Nikita is also worthy of renewal. I don't watch Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, and Ringer, so I don't care one way or the other about these shows. But how the heck did 90210 manage to get renewed (and so early)?! That show is TERRRIBLE!!!

TSC pleaseeee!!

I personally couldn't get into TSC; however, my favorite witches were the Halliwell's. I think the CW should have done a spin off of Charmed with Piper's children. Built in audience! I am so happy that all three of these have been renewed. I hope Nikita is because I want to watch it. And I like Ringer too. I lost track of it though and if it did end of a cliffhanger and doesn't get renewed then I am happy I quit watching. I had planned to get the dvd's but hate when shows don't get to end properly.

The CW(along with Fox) need to get the networks to stop local programming at 10pm. That would give them 5 extra hrs a week. They could put Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Grimm,& Fringe at 10 & make them even better!

I'm glad to see TVD, Supernatural and 90210 are going to be back next year. good to know CW listens to the fans. NBC got a big fail when they ended the show the Event.

I hope Nikita, Secret Circle and Gossip Girl get renewals, CW would be boring without these shows.

Good to have a confirmation regarding Supernatural, even though I've never got the impression that its fate was in question. Season 7 was/is full of (both intended and unintended) goofiness, and I can only hope that season 8 will move closer to the SPN of old.

Hurray for supernatural and for all i care about TVD and TSC they can go to hell. whts the other 1 i cant even remember its name.
Reply

Oh come on...

why don't they just reveal the facts about the other shows as well?? NOW :(

TSC deserves another season much more than 90210!!

IMO, The Secret Circle started out pretty strong, but the writing is kinda weak compared to TVD. I hope Nikita is renewed too. I did watch thru Ringer, but the season finale was enough for me to think they semi-closed out the story.
Reply

wow, looking at the picture of Vampire Diaries, it really looks like the two guys are copying Sam and Dean's haircuts.

except Sam and Dean are: funnier, better acted, and would totally gank their vampire asses.

why did they renew 90210, it's so boring now. TVD and Supernatural was kinda a no-brainer, but I'm very happy that it is renewed. I think Gossip Girl will also get another season, maybe it's last. I think the actors want to move on too. I hope Nikita and Hart of Dixie get renewed too, I like those shows. And i'm crossing my fingers for Ringer, just one season to give it a proper ending. I don't care much for The Secret Circle

I'm a bit tired of these 3 shows now.... I quite like Hart Of Dixie, it's just something different but I can't see it going further then Season 2, although how long was Dr Quinn on? It felt like 100 years.....

NIKITA PLEASE!?!?!?!
Reply

Oh, please... People needs to get their eyes checked out most definitely. The CW isn't like the other local channels beside em at all. ABC, NBC and Fox are the networks doesn't run a show pass Season 1, not The CW! So what, The CW cancels one or two shows off the network. They're not like ABC, NBC and Fox at all.. Seeing them cancel about 6 or 8 shows during the run broadcasting. The CW is pretty decent channel, they wait at the end of the year see which show goes on cacelled or stays on renewed. If these CW shows are shown being broadcast on Fox, ABC and NBC? They all would've beeen cancelled already and even into their first year as well. So, don't hate The CW... Because they cancel only one or two shows off the network.

With the episodes that The Secret Circle has been delievering its got the highest demo after TVD and very recently the most spectacular story line ive seen since TVD's season 1 end season 2 beginning period- its found its footing and I believe out of the new shows its got the best shot not only at a renewal but actual TVD like success ... Keep your head up #TSC ! I think youll be just fine!

Wishing Ringer was renewed and wishing Supernatural wasn't. Better to burn out than fade away, which is exactly what Supernatural is doing. Sure, the ratings have been holding steady at 1.6 mil but that doesn't mean the episodes are getting any better. And as shaky as Ringer was during the start of the season, it ended pretty fantastically and deserves a chance to live.

Mixed news...

Vampire Diaries has lost a step this season...while the completely boring and dull Alaric storyline might finally be paying off it was so bad for so long. Also the originals are becoming dull, they've lost their menace. Still it's pretty entertaining week to week and maybe they can right the ship.

Supernatural on the other hand...put the show out of its misery already, I don't think its problems are something a new showrunner can fix. It's just run its course. I will just have to continue to only acknowledge seasons 1 through 5 as real. Season 6 and 7? They've been as good as fanfic.

I'm glad those three got renewed. I hope that Gossip Girl and Nikita get renewed, but if I had to choose only one, I'd choose Nikita. I think it's one of the most underrated shows on television. More people need to watch it, they would love it. It's not cheesy or campy like the old Nikita.
Reply

Old Nikita cheesy or campy? Are you nuts? Sorry but this version of Nikita is soooo far from the truth it's even sad for me to watch it! I started with the first season and the story died on me... I hope it' s going to be cancled for a better show!

Either way, terrible idea.
