The CW Wants Supernatural and Smallville Back Next Year

Super, thanks for asking.

Okay, Supernatural fans, one big obstacle is out of the way. At the winter TCAs, network president Dawn Ostroff gave every indication that she wants Supernatural back for a sixth season, says EW.com.

Apparently, the only thing that stands in the way of a sixth season of the underrated program is creator Eric Kripke. His five-season outline will wrap up sometime in May, and there has been a lingering question of whether he'll want to continue the story of the Winchester brothers, who are on track to slay Satan at the conclusion of this season.

"I think he's in that state of mind," Ostroff was quoted as saying, in reference to Kripke coming around to the idea of a sixth season. "I had lunch with Eric the other day and he's really excited about the show right now. I think he feels this season has been really satisfying for him. He's certainly not running out of ideas by any stretch of the imagination."

It's true; Supernatural has been ten kinds of awesome this season, and had been really great for several seasons before that. But should Kripke continue on if it doesn't feel right? It's hard to top a season that is all about stopping the apocalypse and Lucifer, but if anyone can follow such an arc with a season that's equally weighty, it's the Supe writing crew. They're all very aware of the "jumping the shark" phenomenon (they named an episode after it, after all), so it's likely they'd avoid any traps that might lead to a drop in quality.

Smallville is in a similar situation. EW says Ostroff is "very optimistic" about the drama coming back for a tenth season.

"I'm really pleased with the show," she said. "I don't know which way we'll go [with renewal], but if you would've asked me [earlier if the show was ending] I would've said, 'Oh probably.' But I can't say that now." She stressed the point by saying the final episode of this season is looking like a season finale, and not a series finale.

Ponder This: I'm sure the initial fan response will be overwhelmingly in favor of more of both shows. But would anyone out there prefer to see them end (especially Supernatural, because it could go out with the conclusion of a storyline that's really been developing for three seasons now)? I'm a big fan of shows setting end dates (that is, unless Lost blows it), and I think Supernatural is a strong candidate for a pre-defined end. Smallville has clearly gone the other way, lasting longer than most people thought it would, but also performing admirably. What do you think?

Well, i don't know how it should go on from where season 5 will end i think something like Sam is studying law, and Dean is just bored, because if there is no Lucifer there is no evil. This will make the world so strange that the Winchester-brothers must resorect Lucifer and keep him looked up. Or the same start as season one just with sam at lawschool instead of highschool. Two lame scenarios, i know, but i hope that if there will be a sixth season they figure something out, cause it is a great show, and i would like more seasons to come, but where and how it goes from here i just can't see yet. Happy that it is Eric Kripke's headache and not mine.

They're two of my favorite shows, so yes I would like to see them go on, but I would really hate to the show end down the line on a cliffhanger like some other shows have.

Supernatural should end this season. As much as I hate writing that, I don't want the show to continue just for the heck of it.

If the story's done, it's done. If Rita hadn't been murdered, the dexter finale would've been a very good final ep too. I hope the writers don't ruin Dexter or Supernatural.

Please let Smallville go on. I watch it all the time. I have seen every episode a couple of times and will always have my favorites to watch whenever I like, but I get really excited about something new.

Supernatural COULD go on, but I'm not sure it SHOULD. As much as I'd like to see more of this show, it was written as a 5yr story arc (Babylon 5 style) & I'd hate to see it "Jump the Shark" after the intended story had finished, better to finish it where it was intended & leave you wanting more.

I think Supernatural can still go for another season or 2. On the other hand Smallville has to resolve its issues soon before they start changing lighting on Tom Welling because he's no spring chicken compared to what Clark's age would be.

Well, I love Supernatural and just before season 8, I loved Smallville, though I've been fallowing both series since their beggining I'd rather to see Supernatural get an end this year and don't become such a boring show just like the story in Smallville has got... I thonk they should think it really good, if they find something to offer better than hell and heaven fight and clark's secret comming out to lex i guess we could see a new season this fall...

I love Supernatural and I love how Eric has built a story line for three years to what seems to be an end all finale. I would hate for him to go on to a sixth season and fall apart. Go out on top, I say. He here's an idea. If Eric has ideas, let's make a movie.

Smallville should only continue if it can finally admit Season 10, as its last. If so they should go out with a bang, Season 10 should bring Darkseid into the picture with Major Zod (transformed into General Zod) with them using the legion ring to bring back Lex Luthor (for the heck of it and the mythology) along with Tess Mercer (going to the dark side once and for all). Have Clark turn into Superman to save Smallville and Metropolis and fly off into the sky's with a last scene saying, Is it a bird, plane, with Lois saying No, it's SUPERMAN to herself as the show wraps up knowing Clark still combatting evil. Sorry but Chloe will have to "die", she isn't in the mythology and she'll have to pay price, perhaps sacrificing herself for Clark.moreless

I am a big fan of CK and the Winchester brothers, I would hate for them to end.. but honestly, is there anything nastier or more bad than Satan himself? I think Supernatural will definitely will end.. as for Smallville, I am surprised too that this show has gone this long... I mean, Smallville is about the young farm boy Clark Kent.. now he's with the Daily Planet, he's almost Superman.. that's out of the original concept of the show right?

Hey FafaTukiTuki, you do realize that if Dean says yes when Michael leaves Dean's a vegetable right? Remember Raphael's host? Human bodies and archangels don't go well together.

A new season where Sam will be Lucifer and Dean will be Michael, Castiel will travel with Dean helping and protecting him while they try to save the world and get Sam back...really? I don't think it's a crappy idea...it's all in my head: Evil Sammy is so hot and Jared is such a gret actor.

I'd really miss Supernatural if it was over after this season, but I don't see where they could take it after preventing Armageddon. Back to simply hunting ghosts and demons? As much fun as that was (I loved every single season), I don't think that it would be a satisfying idea. I know that there must be some incredibly talented people around writing this show and I'm positive that they could come up with something good, I just would rather have it end with an epic and great finale, than to have it dragged on and wearing thin.

I'm a huge fan of Supernatural. I like watching the conflict of both brothers. I can understand why Kripke wants to end the show but look at how many have been cut off at the knees and never explained anything. At least with season you will have that answer but who knows what else can be written. I think they should give it one more season instead of a spin off like most shows.

I love Supernatural as much as the next person but seriously, how can you top the apocalypse? I wouldn't complain about another season but I'll be satisfied if it ended this season, despite how amazing. As for Smallville... it should've ended a while ago. But season 9 has been the best season in a long time. I think the show is capable of pulling off a 10th season but only if Chloe is still around. If they EVER kill of Chloe then I'm going on a murder spree!

Smallville has been great, had its ups and downs but is an amzing show. I think they should end the show in season ten and start a show focusing on superman and lois lane. I would love for the show to go on for ever but I know it cant.

Smallville "jumped the shark" after the season in which Lex Luthor finally and definitively discovered Clark's secret. That was the main overarching plot of the series, Clark's and Lex's friendship. Once Lex was gone the show should really have ended. If they want to continue the superman franchise start up a new show in which there is an actual Superman and not this "red blue blur" crap that has been going on now. Smallville if it seriously continuing needs to introduce SUPERMAN into the show once and for all, have him fly, and fight amazing enemies like Darkseid.Supernatural right now is my favorite show. I would love to see more seasons of the show. But how can you top stopping the apocalypse and killing Lucifer as the main plot? If the writers can make it happen it would be great. If the quality goes down then it should end.moreless

Well I don't like Supernatural and really don't understand what you guys see in that show. Putting an end to it seems a good idea :)But I do love Smallville and I think that they managed to overcome the fact that 2 main actors disappeared and made the series still enjoyable. I still would like to see more of the adventures of Clark Kent even though I can't wait for him to finally become Superman. So I'm game for a new season.

I was thinking about this again and I just want to say it's a shame that whether a show continues to air has little to do with what the fans, the creator and the producers of the show want, and more about what the network wants. We've seen good shows get canceled too early, bad shows getting canceled too late, or mediocre shows that overstay their welcome...

I'm not watching Smallville but I really hope Supernatural will go as planned and end with an amazing 5th season. A sixth would just feel weird. I don't really know how to explain it, but if Eric planned five seasons then he should not change his mind just because someone out there wants to make money and (most likely) will screw up the whole show in the preocess.

    Jan 13, 2010
  • tvfem76

I think that Smallville should be cancelled. It hasn't been really good for four or five seasons. The only reason I still watch it is to see how they are going to end it. As far as Supernatural goes, I love the show but I haven't been to crazy about this season. I think that Supernatural should end this year. After battling Lucifer, I just don't see where the storyline could go from there. If they are renewed for another season and the writers are able to come up with compelling and interesting storylines, I guess I will have to eat my words.

Please Eric Kripke, make Supernatural season 5 the awesome final season. End on a strong plot conclusion and let the show go into history as one of the best in its genre. Better to burn out than to fade away!

Hey Isbloom, I don't know about you, but I enjoy great programming, and I never watch any of the other crap. The Bachelor can rot for all I care, along with every other reality programming. TV series, period, need to contain exactly what Supernatural does, exciting plot, great acting, and terrific writing. One thing many shows seem to struggle with is becoming greater with each successive season or maintaining the same superior level. If a show fades too far the finale is either a cliffhanger (Gosh forbid but it happens all the time) or a pathetic whimper of an ending. Shows should end on a high note for the series overall, not with a fade into the shadows of obscurity as it loses its audience slowly over a prolonged period of time.moreless

I Think I Can Come To Terms On Supernatural Ending If They Do A Sixth Season. Wrap Up The Storyline In 5, Have Fun In 6. But 6 Should Be It If It Will Become Stale. I'd Love To See Them Back On The Road And More Rock Music Each Episode!

SPN should end with a bang. Smallville should at least be renewed for Season 10. That would be EPIC.

    Jan 12, 2010
  • FafaTukiTuki

Maybe not, lsbloom . SPN is great but is not the only show. And let me tell you that NCIS is the mosr viewed show in US and is not some boring procedural cop show. I fight for SPN, but I won't fight if it turns in a shell of what it is now. Just because I have nothing better to watch doesn't mean that I want Jared and Jensen as Sam and Dean until there's a better programmimg.

    Jan 12, 2010
  • lsbloom

Everybody who is saying "end it now" doesn't seem to be looking ahead. Instead of "Supernatural" that you love, instead of creative interesting storylines, instead of GREAT programming, you will have "Vampire Diaries" and "90210" or some procedural cop show with NCIS or CSI or Law and Order in the title. Look at the state of programming around the networks: its the best ratings from the cheapest crap. If you find a show you love, fight for it with your last dying key stroke. Even a less awesome season of Supernatural is 20,000 times better than "The Bachelor." Come on think about it.

To be perfectly honest...neither show has to end, because both shows still have egregious amounts of lore to draw from. In terms of Supernatural there is about 6000 years of human history filled with mythological entities for individual episode storylines, and a dozen or so larger religious figures starting with heroes and ending with full scale gods for an anthological seasonal storyline. So, as long as Kripke is willing, season 6 can be even bigger, eve better and even more complicated and deep than the 5th season. Supernatural has my vote. In terms of Smallville the situation is similar. Firstly, all fans of Supes must realize that his current inability to fly works in tandem with the series name to symolize the years of Clark Kents life before he became Superman. Once he starts flying than the entier solar system becomes his playground and his responsibility as a superhero to human becomes global. In that case a new structure within the basic series formula is needed, new characters, global locations, new superheroes and so on. On the other hand, even if Clark doesn't fly there is still enough lore to keep him busy until he finally decides to put on the costume. The League can put him to work in the past or future, the gathering of superheroes and subsequent forming and initial operations of the Justice League as well as exploring the magical world of DC universe which has been somewhat grounded during these past seasons but is an intricate and important part of the Universe and Superman Comics in general. So, no surprise here, Smallville has my vote. And people, keep an open mind, new incarnations of old things is what keeps history alive and our imagination in the red. May the Force be with you all!moreless

I'm a fan of both shows. Supernatural I'd like to see end because this is what was planned and it seems like it's a story that was given the exact time it deserved. Smallville on the other hand was always leading up to Superman, since those stories have continued in the comics for 80 years I say, why not renew? Every step it gets closer to DC Comics the better it gets.

I'll say this about both shows. I watch both, and while I am a fan of both, I have to say that if they bring them back for a sixth and tenth season, they better have some good story lines. It would be irresponsible of the network, Kripke and the creators of Smallville, Alfred Gough, and the actors to agree to more episodes if they don't bring in top-notch episodes.

While Smallville has gone downhill in recent years, the signing on of Justin Hartley as a full cast member helped. This ninth season has improved drastically from the last few seasons, and with any luck, it will end with a much better finale than last years. Supernatural, on the other hand, has continually gone up, and I can only hope they do the same if they do have a sixth season. However, if there is any doubt in anyone's mind, please, please PLEASE!!! End it after this season. It's hard to top wiping out Satan.moreless

Smallville's been more enjoyable now than his has been in a while. If it continues the path of Clark becoming Superman, gives me more Lois and other character's fromt eh DC universe in a way that makes sense, I say bring it on. Supernatural's totally different because it's been one of the best shows on TV since day 1. On the one hand continuing the show after the ultimate mythology finale, which it's been building to might not be as exciting. BUT, remember those creepy early seasons that were about travel and investigating folklore? There's at least two more seasons worth of material and locations they have yet to explore, it could go that route if it continues. of course I'll really miss Castiel once the angels/demons war is wrapped up, unless he stays and doesn't die. However I do like the idea of it leaving in top form as Kripke is getting the chance to do. But if they can still tell amazing stories after this, I do want to see more. I'd also love to see the early days of John Winchester becoming a hunter. It was shown in comic form but it would make great TV and have that season 1 atmosphere again.moreless

The CW is all about ratings, lets assume that the good ratings are caused by the quality of the show.Supernatural is damn good, but it also have an expiration date. How do you Top up Apocalypse and Lucifer?.Kripke had a plan and let him bow out in his own style.Am sure he can come up with another show.In the case of Smallville, i tried to keep on watchin after season 5 and i managed to season 6 and few episodes of season 7,i tried, but one thing was obvious to me,the name was the same but the show was different, heck they should have renamed it Metro-something!..I would rather they end it and start the Justice league,i will sure watch that one.

I want Supernatural to end and go out at the top. It would break my heart if the best show on tv continued past it's original plan and pull a Smallville by completely sucking after season 5. If it goes on after this season then there absolutely MUST be a plan in place for it to continue for 1-2 seasons tops. Every on board or no-go at all. Smallville was adisaster once it continued past it's 5 season planned story arc. it spent 3 season fumbling around re-using old plots and constantly using lame cop outs and take backs that just pissed fans off. As for Smallville. The show has been better this 9th season but should have been put out of our misery a long time ago. It needs to end before they do more damage.moreless
