The CW's Spring Schedule: Containment Will Take Over for iZombie on Tuesdays Beginning in April

The CW is feeling the burden of having too much programming and not enough real estate to air it all. On Thursday, the network announced a premiere date for the new drama Containment and a return date for the second half of Reign's third season. They'll be replacing the critically beloved series iZombie and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on the network's schedule once their respective seasons end. The network has also handed out a premiere date for the final season of Beauty and the Beast, so grab your calendar and pencil in the following...

iZombie will wrap up its sophomore season with a two-hour finale event on Tuesday, April 12 beginning at 8pm. Now billed as a "limited series event," Julie Plec's contagion drama Containment will then slide into the zombie drama's former Tuesdays at 9pm timeslot after The Flash beginning April 19. The series is based on the Belgian drama Cordon and follows the aftermath of a deadly epidemic outbreak in Atlanta. The fact that The CW has changed its tune and is now calling Containment a limited series means it's probably safe to assume that it's DOA and this is a late-spring burn-off.

Elsewhere, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's first season will conclude Monday, April 18 at 8pm, with Reign taking over as the lead-in to Jane the Virgin the following week on Monday, April 25. Beauty and the Beast will debut its final season on Thursday, June 2 at 9pm.

Now, here's all of that in a handy, easy-to-read schedule.

TUESDAY, APRIL 12

8-9pm: iZombie

9-10pm: iZombie (Season 2 finale)

MONDAY, APRIL 18

8-9pm: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Season 1 finale)

9-10pm: Jane The Virgin

TUESDAY, APRIL 19

8-9pm: The Flash

9-10pm: Containment (Series premiere)

MONDAY, APRIL 25

8-9pm: Reign (New night)

9-10pm: Jane The Virgin

THURSDAY, JUNE 2

9-10pm: Beauty And The Beast (Final season premiere)

Very quick to assume Containment is DOA. But the plot does make it difficult to continue forever. Best comparison is "Under the dome": also contained location, characters, conspiracy so it's best to market it as a limited series.
The original (Cordon) will have a S2 in 2016 (2 years later) only because it was so successful, so I have high hopes for CW too.

According to IMDB it's a 13 episode run. Unfortunately, Claudia Black is only cited for 4 episodes. Let's hope that's wrong, just like IMDB's crazy cast lists that often place main characters down god knows where and minor ones high up.

Getting rid of Beauty and the Beast would've freed some of that precious space...

Reminder: iZombie got 0.5 out of Flash's 1.6. That's a horrible retention. CW have never done 2 hour finale in years. That smells burn off.

Burn off? With a Flash lead-in? I doubt that.

It was the only possible timeslot. Containment would have been a horrible lead-in to Jane the Virgin, and only iZombie and Crazy Ex had short episode orders that would enable the network to get the show on the air before the end of May.

If CW wanted iZombie to stay there they could've ordered 3 more episodes but they didn't. CW has 6 pilots. No way iZombie keeps that slot in Fall if it gets renewed.

That's a real shame about CONTAINMENT: It now being a "limited series event" essentially means there's no chance of a second season BUT if they handle it properly a second season may not be necessary.

The first season of CORDON wrapped up nearly all of the main character's stories and hoestly I think it will struggle in it's second season mainly because of how they chose to end the first season, if they'd left it as a one season show there'd have been some questions left but it would have been manageable.

I just hope CONTAINMENT doesn't end on a major cliffhanger hat never gets resolved.

So CW still refuses to add another regular hour of programming - like most other networks do - in order to accomodate its growing list of shows, because...? I assume there is some valid technical reason (or reasonable concerns regarding profitability) behind this ongoing strategy, but I just don't recall ever stumbling onto a proper explanation anywhere.

They need to add another hour or day. At least.

Because local news is on at 10pm and they can't (or won't) intrude on that time block.

Not everybody airs news at 10. And of course the dissenting channel could just air the 10PM show at 10:30 after the news.

Well I can only speak for the Los Angeles area but the 10pm news is an hour long so that wouldn't work. They could however add programming on Sunday night since I don't think they have anything now.

They could still air 10PM programming at 11PM. And of course in a market like L.A. they would no doubt have the upper hand. I'm sure they could easily threaten to move the network to several affiliates that don't even have a network if not given the 10PM hour.

That was seven years ago, though. The network has done a complete 180. It was sort of a joke creatively. The best idea they could come up with was remaking 90210. It was dead creatively.

The network had Sunday evening programming until 2009 but gave it back to the affiliates after struggling to find programming that could compete in the ratings.

You have great taste. I've been a big fan of her since Farscape, but unfortunately haven't gotten the chance to admire her talent that often.

I hope so. When it moved to Friday people said that it was as good as canceled because that is the night where shows go to die so I wasn't sure if Monday meant it was doing better or that they just don't care. This is it's third night in 3 seasons, which doesn't look great.

Does the deadly epidemic outbreak in Atlanta that requires "containment" happen to be a zombie plague outbreak?

I think CW will just use "limited series event" as a way to be like oh well it wasn't coming back anyway in case they want to cancel it, or if thye renew it then they'll air it summer 2017

That means they'll be skipping nights for new episode premieres between now and the 2-hour iZombie finale:

2/16: The Whopper (episode 13 of 19)
2/23: Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind (episode 14 of 19)

then you have episodes 15, 16, and 17 on either March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, or April 5.

Then the two-hour finale (episodes 18 and 19) on April 12.

Or did the show order get expanded to 22 episodes when I wasn't looking? That would be "standard," but I thought I heard they were only doing 19 episodes this year.

Since CW likes pairing episode premieres--and repeats--together, that also means they'll be doing weird things with Flash, Arrow, and Supernatural no matter how they do or don't preempt iZombie.

I suppose it's possible that the finale will be "Episode 19." But usually when they say "finale event" they mean "let's burn off two separate episodes together because of time constraints."

And that still leaves two missing Tuesdays of new episodes between now and 4/12.

Yes. it would be so much more convenient if they just announced their schedule for the whole year at one point in time. But announcing dates is publicity so they never going to do that. Then i can plan my social engagements (if any) far more ahead and programming my DVR in advance for the whole year. In an ideal world....

Besides the fact that test audiences who saw both this and Lucifer and came out really liking Lucifer, a show that I feel rather lukewarm about and have decided that when Scorpion is on, its getting On demanded because I like the Magicians better, makes me not be willing to give up Agents of Shield for Containment. Despite the fact that I like Chris Wood, he can just go be a random character on the Flash or maybe the big bad for Legends if they get a second season (or new teammate). I will confess that I have had to On Demand Agent Carter, but that is due to iZombie and Teen Wolf...oh, wait, Teen Wolf will be over by then, I might not have a conflict anymore.

oh now i suddenly remember. DVR's don't like you

http://www.tv.com/shows/teen-wolf-2011/community/post/about-broken-spell-and-your-dvr-or-at-least-mine-1409838831/

that's problematic. In an ideal world...

you could buy a new DVR. I have a DVR with six tuners so i can record six shows at once.... It also has more storage space (1 TB)
This is an example i have a different one but with the same functionality.
You never have to use on demand again so in the long run it's probably cheaper. Just a suggestion

Before HD I used to build my own PVRs, but the technology for HD cads and software (especially with closed captions) was still behind the curve, then my server died and I just gave up. But I'm thinking about trying again, just for OTA shows (which is a lot of what I watch) so the Comcast DVR can just focus on cable shows and what we're watching live. Too many conflicts!

I really hope this doesn't mean iZombie is going altogether. Discovered it late and am really enjoying it.

I actually think iZombie is fine, the CW seems to like it, and it got an increase order commitment after like two or three episodes this season and Rob Thomas hasn't been shy about basically saying he is ready, willing and able to handle 22 episodes of the show. I also think they really like pairing up shows and it matches the Flash really well.

Hmm.... I just technically use the one comcast provides. Until I cut the cable cord Netflix is the only extra TV expense I will let in my budget. Thanks for the info though.

Isn't "limited series event" code for "We made this so if people don't watch it we end without emberassing ourselves it but if people watch it we make another season"?

Usually. But the series has never been billed as a limited series event until today. So it appears that they're trying to do that but do it really late in the game.

I believe Wayward Pines was an "event series" last summer, which led me to believe it was one run and done. Imagine my surprise when it was renewed for a second season.

I was thinking about Wayward Pines as such as well. Doubly so when you consider they covered all of source material and ended with a closure
