I have watched all the criticly acclaimed shows but this one. So i watched the first 3 and thought it was kinda pointless and boring, but i had to know why everybody loves this show so i watched the entire first season and i still thought it wasn't very good. It's strongly character driven witch i like but it's very slow. Theres isn't a very strong plot other than the fact it's in the 60's. What am I missing? Someone please tell me why this show is so good cause I would love to know.

I agree with Brandon. I tried watching this to see what the fuss was about, and also find it slow. I love a great character-driven show (Breaking Bad), but the characters here... I find myself not really caring about what they're up to.

With a show like Mad Men, you sort og have to be going into it knowing that it's a show about characters. There is story, no doubt about it, but it's a show that relies on it's characters to tell that story; the character arcs drive the plot, as the personalities that people develop - in real life, as well - are what inform change. And Matt Weiner likes to focus on what causes that change, how long that change takes, what feeds it, what slows it down, what are the results, the consequences, of these changes. It's almost purely a character stufy. A fascinating, stylish character study. And that's what you have to be ready for. You can't exactly go in and expect there to be big, dramatic office romances between quirky interns and attractive males that may escalate into love, who knows, now there's a love triangle, look, a person who plays a part in my past and betrayed me showed up, do I still love them, do I still hate them...that sort of thing doesn't necessarily happen, and when something like it DOES, it's not in the space of an episode. That's what draws me in. The characters and their lives make sense, to some extent, even the greedy characters, as we are informed as to what has made them feel that way. I guess some people might not enjoy it. But you need to approach it the right way to really get the best out of it.moreless
