Watch the Chilling Trailer for Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House

"Your mother, she was not crazy," Timothy Hutton, says in the trailer for Netflix's reimagining of Shirley Jackson's classic novel The Haunting of Hill House. "Neither was your sister, neither is your brother, neither are you. It's that house."

The house in question is one of the most famous haunted houses in all of literary history, getting revived in a new incarnation by Gerald's Game director Mike Flanagan. Netflix describes the series as "a complex family drama wrapped in a chilling horror story," and the trailer certainly gives the sense that family history will haunt the characters, both literally and figuratively. Flanagan is reuniting with Gerald's Game star Carla Gugino, who plays the Crain family matriarch, for the terrifying series that also stars Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Henry Thomas, Lulu Wilson and McKenna Grace.

Although the series will diverge from the plot of Jackson's work, it doesn't seem to be skimping on the dread-filled atmosphere of her 1959 novel. Hearing a little girl talk about having a dream about feeling so miserable she wants to die will never not be unnerving, you know?

The Haunting of Hill House's 10-episode first season arrives on Netflix Friday, Oct. 12.
