The Latest Mad Men Conspiracy Theory Means It's Time for Another Death Watch: Does Megan Draper = Sharon Tate?

It's that time of the year again: We're well past the halfway point for Mad Men's sixth season and while the Bob Benson conspiracy theorizing has perhaps run its course—at least temporarily—now that the overwhelmingly chipper upstart has repeatedly shown that deep down, he's just nice, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of other evidence to obsess over regarding different aspects of the show.

Like, say, the outfit Megan wore at the end of Sunday's "The Better Half" as police sirens nearly drowned out the dialogue between she and Don. Actress Sharon Tatewho was killed during the infamous Manson Family murders of 1969—wore the exact same (NSFW!) T-shirt/panties combo for an Esquire photo shoot the year before, and according to Mad Men's Powers That Be, the decision to dress Megan like a fellow up-and-coming actress from that era was no accident:

Maybe the T-shirt alone wasn't enough to raise the red flags, but it was certainly the most obvious homage after a string of less-blatant connections between the Drapers and Tate, which I've culled—with help from ye old internets, namely Reddit and Warming Glow—for you below:

– In "The Crash," Sally Draper was spotted reading Rosemary's Baby, which was later adapted to film by Tate's husband, director Roman Polanski.

– We also learned in "The Crash" that Megan often "paid" for Sally to watch Gene and Bobby with stylish attire that Betty didn't approve of, like mini-skirts and go go boots. Another Manson Family murder victim, Rosemary La Bianca, was a successful boutique owner, and she's been described as popular with her teenage step-daughters because she introduced them to more current fashion than their mother did.

– The rising violence that we've witnessed in Mad Men's New York is representative of similar patterns throughout the country as a whole, and it embodies the apocalyptic Helter Skelter thing that Manson and his "family" were all about.

– If we go back to the Season 6 Poster, much of what we theorized is still up in the air—especially all of those very nervous-looking po-po.

Sharon Tate was preggers when she was murdered. Megan recently experienced a miscarriage

– Both women, while successful in their own rights, were married to much more successful husbands. Don = Roman Polanski? (Actually, that's not a terribly out-there theory: both men are brilliant...but kind of effed up.)

– In the months leading up to her murder, Rosemary La Bianca experienced unease in her home and believed that it'd been broken into at least once while she and her husband were out... kind of like Grandma Ida in the Draper penthouse.

So... it all looks pretty clear that Megan Draper is a goner, but then again, last season, dearly departed Lane Pryce didn't even make our Season 5 death watch list because the evidence overwhelmingly pointed to someone else—like Emo Pete or Trippin' balls Roger. If it's not Megan, then who DO you think is going to bite it this season? Betty? Sylvia? Pete? (Pete's's still not having a really great season, you know?)

And what are the circumstances of their untimely demise? East coast Helter Skelter? Bob Benson? IT'S BOB BENSON, ISN'T IT!? That's why he's so disgustingly nice. Who would suspect the nice guy of chopping women into itty-bitty pieces in his free time?

Answer: EVERYONE.

You're forgetting about a rising political star who's according to Don isn't to important to die, my money is on Henry.

Things point to Megan dying, but could be a red herring.. the Sharon Tate stuff, Don's hallucination of her with her hair in a headband, like sharon tate, misscarried but pregnant again, and appearing with the dead soldier.. What really made me wonder is in the preview for next week, Betty is sniffling, saying " She was only 25 years old".. could she be referring to Megan? Sharon doesn't die for another year.

What makes me wonder are the cast pictures they put out at the beginning of the season, everyone in the pic is in formal attire, Roger, Pete, Betty, Sally are in the pic, Don is seated and Megan bending over, speaking to Don. Maybe it's his birthday party, his birthday is in June? Why else would they all be together? It looks to be set in the Francis's ? So Megan is not dead as of next episode anyway, IMO.

I first read about this theory on Monday and I find it very interesting. However whether Megan's death is literally or metaphorical i dont really care. Megan is one of the characters Ive kind of stopped caring about a long time ago. I have a feeling something might happen to her b/c she has been featured heavly over this season (which I wish wasnt the case b/c it takes away from other main characters like Joan for example). But I dont know for sure if she will actually die. B/c the other characters which have dies in the past werent given a whoile bunch of clues (will in retrospec they might have? idk). I find that on Mad Men deaths and tragedies come as a surprise.
I also love that everyone constantly assumes that characters are going to die on this show thats so funny.

"If it's not Megan, then who DO you think is going to bite it this season? Betty? Sylvia? Pete? (Pete's's still not having a really great season, you know?)"
They cant kill Pete! (ok Im one of those rare ppl who actually likes the character)
Well I think the whole Sylvia thing is over with. But um Abe? Did Abe die? we never fully learnt the outsome of the stabbing. It would be interesting to have Peggy know that she killed a man. Maybe if thats the case she could run into Father Gill again. Or she could go to the crazy house? (I actually like Peggy I wouldnt really want her to snap again its just an idea)

I honestly cannot wish anyone dying the sharon tate way, even fictional characters. If she dies let her be hit by a bus like everyone else in Tv shows these days.

If they imitate the Tate murder, Mad Men will have sunk to a vile new low. Cheap, creepy and sick, this would be disgusting.

Mad men is freaking amazing and its quality is as high as ever. Imitating a real historic event is what makes a great period drama accurate!

It's silly, but Manson and Benson are really alike.

I'm really hoping that Megan shares the same fate as Sharon Tate. Whereas Sharon should have lived.... Megan needs to die. Can't stand her and her nasty mouth

They wouldn't kill Pete before unwrapping the story about his and Peggy's child.

What's left to unwrap? Peggy told him and then gave the baby away... do you think Peggy will change her mind?

Actually I think the kid would be around 8 by now (seeing that he was born '60 or '61)
Do we know for sure that she gave it up for adoption? Remeber how her sister was pegnant at the same time. Maybe she had a miscarriage and is raising Peggy and Pete's son as her own. Which is very reasonable.
So either that whole storyline is completely finnished but there is still a chance that one of the two could accidentaly talk about it to someone. Don knows half the story, but for some reason I can see Pete accidentaly say something to Bob

Te the boy is already 5 years old and sooner or later I except Pete to meet him (that's the only thing left in Pete's story)

But we don't need another ex-wife for Don, so it kinda works.

Roman Polanski is brilliant?? The man is a convicted, escaped rapist that deserves to rot in jail. Not in a million years would I ever consider watching his work let alone refer to him as brilliant

It could be as simple as a fashion choice by the costume designer. But something big is bound to happen, so I'll play.... I think it's more likely that a jealous husband who has his sights set on revenge against Don will somehow kill Megan, whether on purpose, or mistaken identity, or she get's caught in the crossfire. I'm starting to wonder if the Sylvia/Dr. Rosen thing was a giant misdirect this season (what with Sylvia actually saying her husband would kill her and then Don if he found out) and the real "affair to remember" was Don sleeping with a dramatically changed Betty. What would Henry do if he found out that Don slept with his wife (or god forbid she ends up preggers, like some of you think)? Would he come after Don, or try to sleep with Don's wife for revenge and end up killing her in the process? (Same for Dr. Rosen, but it seems way too obvious now.) Very interesting to theorize about....

WHOA. Interesting points.
I will point out thought that BOB BENSON ISN'T NICE. In the premiere he said his dad was dead, and in this episode he's suddenly referring Pete to a guy who nursed his father back to full health... Contradiction much? He's up to something.

I had missed that initially, too. One of the more interesting theories about Bob is that he's Don Draper / Dick Whitman's bastard son. Remember, we just got flashbacks of the motherly whore who took young Dick's virginity at an early age, then was ejected from the home shortly thereafter (presumably never to be seen by Dick again). If she had a secret child 9 months later, Don Draper could conceivably have a child Bob Benson's age. This would then lend credence to Bob saying his father had died (Dick technically was killed in the Korean war), while the new Don was brought back to health by an Army nurse after the explosion. Personally, I think Bob's a little too old for that, but I'm sure they could fudge the numbers a little and make it work.
So, is he Don's son? Is he a killer? Is he a spy or undercover journalist? Is he gay or bi and has a thing for Pete? Who knows, but it will be interesting to find out.

I think you are on to something re bob being dicks son. To the world, both the real Don Draper (died in Korea), and Dick Whitman, (died asfar as the govt. and his family were concerned in Korea), are dead. Don's dual identity. The flashbacks to young dick the the w.h. have to be more than just that. I do think maybe the hooker with a heart, Aimee? could have had dicks baby and he would be the age of Bob Benson. Pete knows Don is not Don. Hmmm, maybe BB is looking for his long lost father, and by accident stumbled into him, but doesn't know yet? Or he's a CIA spy.

I noticed the contradictions in his story but I never thought about him being Dons son. I like that theory more than the other ones brought up so far. (although it doesnt explain why hes so interested in Pete.. hmm)

Well Don's supposed to be like 42 now? so lets say he lost his virginity at 16 (I really can't tell how old Don is supposed to be in those scenes) then that would make Bob 26. So that still works.

Pete knows Don's true identity..remember the box that Adam left for Don? Pete found it. Roger kind of knows too. Pete wanted to use the info against Don.

Don's birthday is in June you know, so next episode or so should be the birthday party.

I think you miss understood my comment b/c I was referring to why Bob is so interested in Pete.

I know that Pete, Betty and Megan (and b4 she died Anna did )know about Don. And Peggy knows a little bit but when has Roger learn anything?

I think the only way to end Don and and Megan is her death. I don't see him divorcing her no matter how bad it get's because she's not as psycho pushy as Psycho Betty. Or they will continue the stale storyline of the two growing further apart and Don not caring at all while Megan continually tries to make it work and thinking it's her fault that he is no longer close. Also, Bob Benson is definitely a serial killer so he's the one who does it. He also paid Grandma Ida to break in so when he makes his move it'll just look like another robbery gone wrong. Pete is too hated to be killed off.
